7th GRADE GRAND CANYON TRIP
In the early morning on Monday, May 9, a group of sleepy 7th graders met at John Wayne Airport about to embark on a journey to Arizona.  What they did not realize is that the experience would be a life-changing opportunity.Waiting for them in "The Grand Canyon State" was a variety of activities ranging from rafting in the Colorado River to hiking in the Grand Canyon. The combined students of Mable, Edgewood, and Anaheim Hills made new friends along each journey. Each night there was yet another activity to enjoy. Each day, a main event was planned for the students, who eagerly took on any challenges that came their way. One of the most popular events took place on Tuesday, when students were able to hike up Bell Rock and mountain bike across the trail. Later in day the kids jumped in for a splash at Slide Rock Park, where natural water slides and currents form a fun adventure .Wide-eyed travellers were also able to marvel at the majestic wonder of the Grand Canyon. All in all, every participant enjoyed the experience and has something to remember for a lifetime.

8th GRADE INTERNATIONAL LUNCHEON
On Thursday May 12, Mable Jr. High hosted its annual 8th grade International Luncheon. 8th grade students participated by bringing food from their respective cultures to share. Parent volunteers transformed the cafeteria into a display of multicultural celebration, and helped make this experience memorable for the departing 8th class. Students and teachers had the opportunity to enjoy dishes from all the cultures present in our 8th grade, and learn about one another's cultural background. 8th graders Lauren Huntly, Vasiliki Courelli and Stephanie Oh commented on how outstanding the variety of dishes was, and how carefully all the food was presented. Some students also dressed in traditional attire. We thank everyone who partcipated, especially the FPA, and we look forward to our next year's event.

2nd GRADE SPELLING BEE
No matter how you spell it, Fairmont students are "A-M-A-Z-I-N-G...AMAZING!" After a week of mock Spelling Bees, five students from each second grade classroom were chosen to enter the official Spelling Bee on May 17th The enthusiatic and gut-wrenched fans listened to seven grueling rounds until Jennifer Cresap came out on top with the correct spelling of the word "kneel." In true Fairmont fashion, the other competitors cheered for our newly crowned Spelling Bee Queen. All participants were recognized for their bravery and were awarded with a warm crowd cheer, a heartfely handshake by Mrs. Calabria, and a certificate. So hats off to all of this year's second graders and good luck to next year's participants.

FACULTY LOUNGE mable spotlights junior high history teacher

Seventh and 8th grade World and US History teacher Alena Pettit started her career with Fairmont at the Prep Academy where she taught 7th, 8th, and 9th grade history for 5 years.  She’s been with Mable Junior High for the past two years where, in addition to teaching history, she also serves as Yearbook Advisor and Pentathlon coach for 7th and 8th grade.  Ms. Pettit earned her degree and California credential in Social Science from Cal State Long Beach.  When she’s not preparing lesson plans, working on yearbook layouts or quizzing her pentathlon team members, she enjoys reading, playing volleyball, and watching movies. Her favorite part of teaching at Fairmont is getting a chance to bond with her students.  “I love the interaction with the kids.  Working at Fairmont allows teachers to have a personal connection to both the students and parents.  Many of the teachers at Fairmont have created and maintained a lasting relationship with our students.  I really enjoy it when my old students come back to visit,” she says.

SHOW & TELL
Photo of the Week:4th Grade Students Visit Our State Capitol

4th Grade Study Trip to Sacramento
On Thursday, April 29,  fourth grade students went on a field trip to Sacramento. We met at Ontario Airport at 5:30 A.M. First we met our tour guide, Michelle. We got on a bus and drove to Old Town Sacramento. We saw the American River, walked around the town, and even rode on a stage coach. We also visited an old school room from the 1800's. One of the best parts was the stop at Candy Heaven, where I tried a REAL chocolate covered cricket! After Old Sacramento, we rode the bus to the Capitol building and toured the place where the California laws are made. Then we headed to Sutter's Fort, ate at Old Spaghetti Factory, and saw a magic show. The next day, we got back on the bus and drove to the Nimbus Fish Hatchery, where we fed the fish. Next, it was up to Coloma to pan for gold on the American River. Unfortunately, I didn't find even one flake of gold, nor silver, nor copper. So most of us just went to a gift shop and bought little bottles of gold flakes. Finally, we went back to the airport, ate a quick dinner, and boarded the plane back to Southern California. We were all met by hugs, kisses, and words of kindness from our families. Home, sweet, home!

The Department of Boating and Waterways sponsors the Safe and Wise Water Ways poster contest each year, promoting safe boating and waterways rules. Eighth grader Kile Y. was one of the winners for the entire state of California, and his artwork is showcased in the organization's 2011 calendar for the month of February. 2011 Imagination Celebration Poster Contest
This local contest sponsored by Arts Orange County attracts over 500 entries each year. To be chosen as one of the 24 finalists is a very big honor. SNACK TIME top six things to have in your kitchen

In January we were thrilled to have Chef Tanya of Native Foods come visit us at Anaheim Hills for a Chalk Talk. While she was there, she shared her suggestions on the top six things to keep in your kitchen at all times, and we wanted to share them with you! Read more and see pictures from the event on the Native Foods blog

Top Six Things to Have in Your Kitchen:

1. Oatmeal
Quick for a snack, a great breakfast with some berries and walnuts for you and the kids.
2. Legumes
These are lentils, garbanzos, black and red beans. Keeps your engine on. You can use to make ethnically diverse dishes. Think Mexican black beans, East Indian Lentils, Middle Eastern garbanzos, etc.
3. Dark Leafy Greens
Steam them, saute them, chop them in salads, add them to your cooked beans for a hearty soup.
4. Fresh Berries
An easy to eat fruit, kids can snack on them and they go good in the oatmeal.
5. Avocados
The California wonderfood. Slice them, spread them, guac them.
6. Olive Oil
Ready to make a fresh easy salad dressing or saute some onions and garlic for a flavor base for your grains, legumes, veggies and soups.

SHOW & TELL
Photo of the Week: Parents, students, teachers, and visitors enjoy the Enrollment Celebration Barbecue held on April 27

Enrollment Celebration Barbecue
The Mable Campus was filled with excitement on Wednesday, April 27, as families and visitors enjoyed a picnic-style lunch with hot dogs and snacks. Families took time to visit with their children on the field, chatted with friends, and enjoyed a perfect spring day. The picnic was a wonderful opportunity to share our appreciation for the continued trust our families have in us, and we are extremely grateful to them for allowing us to achieve our enrollment goal. Many thanks also to the Fairmont Parent Association for providing delicious snow cones, and to Food Management for catering such tasty treats.

Boys Soccer
The JH Boys Soccer team just finished up a very successful season. They made it all the way to the semifinals of the Tri-Way League where they fell short to Anaheim Hills 2-0.It was a remarkable season for the boys because they finished with a record of 7-5 while playing with 10 players for 10 out of the 12 games. The defense was held together by goalie Nico Ament and defenders Matthew Tuinstra, Ejay Cho, Brando Padilla, and Nomin Park. They only gave up 9 goals in 12 games, which is a wonderful accomplishment. Through the midfield we were led by Shawn Cho, our playmaker, Alfred Mustafa, Justin Lee, Tarek Sahyoun, and Ken Li. Our leading goal scorer, Kareem Latif, tallied 16 goals for the season and was our engine during our play-off run. I have been coaching soccer for over 10 years, and I have not been more proud of a group of boys. Their heart and determination was second to none, and it was a true privilege to coach these young men.

Junior High Spirit Week
As the year begins to wind down, ASB events pick up. After a relaxing spring break, Junior High students jumped into the events of Spirit Week. ASB planned everything, and this year it was all about the movies. Each day, students competed to earn spirit points for their homeroom by dressing up to the according theme of that day. On Friday, April 29, homerooms competed against each other for a chance to steal the trophy from Mrs. Lugo's homeroom, last year's champion class. The homeroom games this year included a peanut butter and popcorn toss, a banana eating contest, a relay race, and a frozen T-shirt contest. In addition to spirit week, ASB sponsors other major events throughout the year including Carnival, the End-of-Year dance, and fundraisers.

BOOK REPORT celebrating national poetry month

In honor of National Poetry Month, our Fairmont campuses are sharing poetry anthologies to pique your child’s interest in the rhymes and rhythms of poetic verse.  And, we’d like to go a step further and motivate our students to write their own original poems.  To get their creative juices flowing, may we suggest:

Pizza, Pigs, and Poetry: How to Write a Poem
by Jack Prelutsky

Perfect for children in third-sixth grade, the former Children’s Poet Laureate uses comical anecdotes from his life and more than a dozen examples of his own poetry to inspire children to put pen to paper.  Prelutsky shows how kids can use their real life experiences—wacky things like playing with their food at the dinner table—as fodder for poetic writing.  In addition to tips and plenty of hair brained inspiration, he concludes the book with fun “poemstarts” to motivate even the most reticent to get writing.

We'd love to hear from our talented Fairmont poets.  Comment on this blog posting with your child's original poem!

BOOK REPORT mable librarian turns kids on to a light in the attic

A Light in the Attic
by Shel Silverstein

This classic poetry anthology from celebrated children's poet Shel Silverstein is a must-have in your home library, recommended for ages 9-12 and as a read-aloud for younger kids.  Or, check it out from Ms. Lloyd or Ms. Abouabdo at the Mable library!

Last night while I lay thinking here
Some Whatifs crawled inside my ear
And pranced and partied all night long
And sang their same old Whatif song:
Whatif I flunk that test?
Whatif green hair grows on my chest?
Whatif nobody likes me?
Whatif a bolt of lightning strikes me?...
Here in the attic of Shel Silverstein you will find Backward Bill, Sour Face Ann, the Meehoo with an Exactlywatt, and the Polar Bear in the Frigidaire. You will talk with Broiled Face, and find out what happens When Somebody Steals Your Knees. You get caught by the Quick-Digesting Gink and find out why a Mountain Snores and They Put a Brassiere on the Camel. From the creator of the beloved poetry collections Where the Sidewalk Ends and Falling Up, here is another wondrous book of poems and drawings.--amazon.com review

FACULTY LOUNGE mable's junior high math teachers take the spotlight

It’s all about math this month at the Mable campus with our faculty spotlight shining on Trevor Ickes and Michelle Paraiso.  These Junior High math teachers make sure Mable’s junior high students are motivated and prepared to challenge any math problem them come up against.  Ms. Paraiso teaches grades seven and eight and is also the junior high math pentathlon coach.  She earned her BA in Mathematics and her MA in Education from Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines.  In addition to teaching math in the Philippines, she taught at Fairmont Prep for six years before joining the Mable team two years ago.  She enjoys reading and listening to music in her time away from school.

Michelle's cohort in the Math Department, Mr. Ickes has been teaching for the past seven years, six of those years were spent teaching sixth graders.  He teaches junior high and also serves as NJHS Coordinator and pentathlon coach.  Mr. Ickes earned his BA from Loyola Marymount University and attended National University for his credential courses.  He enjoys coaching soccer, playing golf and boating in his free time.  Both Michelle and Trevor credit the supportive environment at Mable and the motivated students with creating a great teaching environment.

“I enjoy the constant interaction of teachers and students and the ability to engage students that are prepared to take their education to the next level,” says, Mr. Ickes.  Ms. Paraiso loves getting to know her students by attending social events and working with them outside of class time.
