SHORT STORY endeavour visits Fairmont

Students at our Historic Anaheim Campus took a break from classroom studies today to witness a moment of American history when the Space Shuttle Endeavour flew over our campus on its way home to Los Angeles.

Waiting patiently...one of our Kindergarteners asked Mrs. Calabria
if we would all be going to outer space with Endeavour. So cute! :)

Mrs. Baham, Science Teacher, using her classroom iPad
to check in on Endeavour's progress towards campus

I think I see it!

 Where?

 Endeavour atop a Boeing 747

Endeavour was cheered on by all of our K-8 students as it flew directly over
the play field at our Historic Anaheim Campus--and if you don't believe us, you'll just have to watch this video for yourself!

Excitement!

Elation...

(Many thanks to Senor G, Ms. Sarah, and Mr. Ed for the photos and videos)

SCHOOL NEWS whooping cough vaccination now req'd for 7th-12th grades

This is just a reminder that a new school immunization law requires all students entering 7th through 12th grades in the 2011-2012 school year in California to be immunized with a pertussis (whooping cough) vaccine booster called Tdap.

Fairmont 7th-12th grade students will not be able to start school this fall without proof of vaccination. Please schedule your vaccination today:

As stated by the CA State Government-affiliated organization, Shots for School: Pertussis is a very contagious respiratory disease that can be severe and last for months. The immunity received from either early childhood immunization or pertussis disease wears off over time, leaving older students and adults susceptible again to pertussis. Immunization with Tdap can protect students, schools and communities against pertussis.

The new requirement affects all students – current, new, and transfers – in public and private schools. The law has two phases:
  • For the 2011-2012 school year, all students entering into 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th or 12th grades will need proof of a Tdap shot before starting school.
  • For 2012-2013 and future school years, all students entering into 7th grade will need proof of a Tdap shot before starting school.

SCHOOL NEWS bill and melinda gates foundation plans to film fairmont teachers

The fact that Fairmont Private Schools has some of the best teachers around is something we've known for years.  We've also been proud to share our innovative approach to technology; blending online and in-class learning experiences to reach out to 21st century learners.  Now, the cat is out of the bag in a big way!  This June, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, working on behalf of The Teaching Channel, requested to film some of our K-2nd and high school teachers in action. The Teaching Channel is a video showcase -- on the Internet and TV -- of inspiring and effective teaching practices in America's schools.

On July 13, Wingspan Pictures, the production company working with the Foundation, will be visiting the Anaheim Hills campus to film Heather Lopez teaching an interactive Kindergarten lesson using an interactive whiteboard.  In the afternoon, they will head over to Fairmont Preparatory Academy to film Mark Hassoun teaching "The Fundamentals of Triangles" to his summer geometry class using Fairmont's hybrid online/in-class format.  Both Heather and Mark were required to meet certain qualifications set by the Foundation and had to submit detailed lesson plans for approval.  Special thanks to them for their willingness to jump on board with this project!

Fairmont's footage will eventually appear on the Teaching Channel website, You Tube and Facebook pages and could be included in a television episode on the program "Great Lesson Ideas" this fall. Fairmont is incredibly proud of our amazing teachers and honored to have the opportunity to share what they do so well!

SHOW & TELL
8th Grade Promotion Ceremony
On Tuesday, June 14, the Mable Campus Gymnasium was transformed for an evening of recognition and appreciation for our families during this year's promotion ceremony. As the current eighth grade students said farewell to junior high and started looking forward to their high school years, many heartfelt emotions were at hand. For some, the bittersweet moments were a tad much, and a few tears were mixed with smiles and laughter. The amazingly decorated gymnasium was the perfect setting for a ceremony where students, their families, faculty, and staff came together in a celebration of the many accomplishments of the promoted class. After the ceremony, families enjoyed visiting with one another in a small reception by the "Big Tree," symbol of our Mable Campus. Congratulations to valedictorian Jessica C. and salutatorian Kile Y., as well as to all our eighth graders. We wish all of them great success in their high school years.Thank you to all the faculty, staff, and our families for making such a memorable evening possible.

To our excellent faculty and staff, we extend our gratitude for their tireless efforts.

Have a great, safe summer everyone. See you again on Tuesday, August 30 to start another successful year.

SHOW & TELL
Junior High Drama Performance
On Thursday, June 2, the Junior High Theatre class performed in two showings of their final play for the school year, entitled Café. Café is a collection of scenes and monologues dealing with the triumphs and tribulations of junior high life. The show was set in an outdoor Café, and narrated by Mr. Bean, the café owner. Scenes covered a variety of timely and important topics, from dealing with academic and social pressure, to facing embarrassing situations and talking to parents, and to the difficulty of making friends and understanding one another. The cast wowed audiences with their honest portrayals and bold choices. They displayed amazing talents, not only in acting and character development, but in their ensemble work, as well as dancing and singing. The students worked hard and it showed!

5th Grade State Fair
On Tuesday, June 7, parents and teachers were invited to the annual 5th grade State Fair. Students from our fifth grade classes created model representations of the states on which they wrote their reports. Each state was uniquely created by each student using various methods to construct the models. Some methods included papier mache, clay, cakes, jello, and rice krispies. The models were beautifully displayed and shared in the cafeteria for all to see. Nathalie Song painted New Hampshire on canvas, and Rick Yun used chopsticks as his medium to represent Montana. Samantha Tan and Kayla Shikina made their models look "sweet." These were just a few of the wonderful and creative models. All of the fifth graders worked really hard, and their models turned out fantastic. We would like to thank our parents, teachers, and satff for their support.

From the Parent Association
The Mable Parent Association held its last meeting of the year on Thursday, June 9.  After a very successful year, some board members said good bye as newly chosen ones were announced. Mrs. Kishimoto submitted the poem below after the meeting.

How can I be of help? " she asked,
"I have a good idea," he said
"Here, hold my hand," she suggested,
"We'll do it together," they offered.

"We'll be right here until it's done."
"Let's do it this way, it's more fun!"
"It's what we're here for it's no fuss."
"Call us back if you should need us."

"She needs our help, God bless her heart."
"Oh, we're just glad to do our part."
"Walk with us, we'll show you the way."
"Goodness no, we don't want pay."

"You can do it, we'll show you how."
"You need it when? We'll do it now."
"If you need anything we're right here."
"Who are we?  We're Mable Campus Volunteers."

SCHOOL NEWS fairmont students honored at annual trash artist challenge awards

"Harry Potter Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry"
The old saying goes: "one person's trash is another person's treasure." Well, the annual Trash Artisit Challenge says trash can not only be treasure, but art!! On June 8, 2011 at the Anaheim Hilton, Fairmont students Jyothii K., Bryan D., and Justin C. were invited to attend the Trash Artist Challenge awards, celebration and dinner. Our two sixth grade teams were finalists in this year's competition.
"Come Alive-the story of Little Red Riding Hood"
Bryan and Justin along with many students from Mrs. Cameron’s 6th grade class created the Harry Potter’s Hogwarts school. Jyothii created “Come Alive”--the story of Little Red Riding Hood in 3-D. All materials were recycled.
Anaheim Mayor Tom Tait
Kent French, the Host/Producer of the Anaheim Ducks, was the Master of Ceremonies. Mayor Tom Tait from Anaheim was also in attendance, and he even introduced himself to Bryan and Justin during the showcase. Jyothii’s father, Bryan’s mom and Justin’s mom were glowing with pride. (not to mention their art teacher!)

On Friday, May 27th, eighth graders from Mable, Edgewood and Anaheim Hills campuses sponsored the 32nd annual Bruce Hockman Carnival. There were twenty-eight booths ranging from hairspray and marriage to horseshoes and fortune telling. The youngest visitors from Citron, Anaheim Hills, and Edgewood campuses loved the wands and halos and face painting booths while the older students gravitated to the inflatables. After saying goodbye to the other campuses, Mable eighth graders played on the inflatables while the seventh graders cleaned up. "It was hard work but fun to raise money for ASB," remembers Meera Mistry. "I liked working in the hairspray booth," said Alvin Chu. "The little kids were so excited and so creative."

5th grade students get ready to do some underwater exploring during their study trip to Catalina Island

SHOW & TELL
5th Grade Catalina Island Trip
Last week fifth graders earned their sea legs after completing another great trip to Catalina Island. Wednesday morning began with a heavy rain but dried as we arrived at the dock. We were just in time! The boat was leaving early due to heavy winds that were forecast for the afternoon. That made many of the students nervous, but Fairmont students, parents, and teachers are a hardy bunch. It was rough, but by the time we arrived the sun was out. After learning about the local fish and having a hilarious lesson on "How to put on a wetsuit," everyone headed out to snorkel. This was a new experience for many. That evening we braved the cold and wind to hear about the stars and constellations. The next morning dawned warm and sunny. We were off to the fish lab, the shark tank, the invertebrate lab (where we held several animals) and algae lab. There were games and activities for each of these. The wind picked up in the afternoon so unfortunately, there was no kayaking for two of the groups. Instead, they hiked to "Bible Peak" and had a lesson in archery. Lots of bull's-eyes! The other two groups visited the plankton lab and viewed creatures in a drop of water through electron microscopes. The most interesting was a squid dissection. Everyone was grossed out at first, but the instructors were funny and that helped. Friday morning brought more sunshine and no wind. Two groups were able to kayak. This was another new experience for most of the students. Muscles were used that had never been used before!

Great food, warm cabins, fabulous and funny instructors, a new grass field, wonderful parents, and smiling teachers all left us rather sad to leave the island. The anticipation of another rough boat ride made some of us anxious, but it turned out to be a smooth sail. Thank you to our chaperones Mrs. LaScola, Ms. Guzman, Dr. Chawla, Mr. Zoreikat, Mr. Dam, and Mr. Pinsky. We couldn't have made this trip without you!

National Junior Honor Society returns to Mable
On May 17, 2011, the Mable Junior High held its National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) Induction Ceremony. This year, 61 members were inducted into Mable's NJHS. This was a remarkable feat in regards to students having to meet the stringent requirements set by NJHS. National Junior Honor Society is a nationally recognized organization that is dedicated to provide a strong foundation for building leadership skills through service to the school and the surrounding community. This program also honors students who have maintained an exceptional academic record along with exemplary citizenship and concern for improving society. Eligible students included third trimester sixth grade students, seventh grade, and eighth grade students that maintained at least a 3.2 GPA. The 2011 Inductees will be asked to participate in a chapter-sponsored service project as well as an individual service project that reflects his or her personal talents and interests each year.

SNACK TIME may is egg-cellent

It’s time to celebrate a versatile food, found around the globe and eaten in a variety of ways for centuries, the egg. Eggs are well-liked in the US, and if you count all the eggs eaten for breakfast and used in cakes and other cooked foods, we eat about 250 eggs per person per year!

Why are eggs so popular? Well, for starters they help give foods a richer flavor, color and texture. Eggs are high in complete protein and easy to digest. All of the protein in eggs can be found in the egg white, or “albumen”.  The albumin also contains B vitamins, which play a role in energy metabolism.

Egg yolk contains the fat soluble vitamins A and D, fat, and most of the minerals, such as iron, calcium, phosphorus and potassium. The yolk is also rich in choline, an important nutrient for development of the brain.

Lutein, a yellowish phytonutrient previously discussed on these blogs, is also found in egg yolk, and has the ability to protect the eye from damaging ultraviolet light. Corn and other yellow vegetables contain lutein, but the form of lutein found in egg yolk is much more bioavailable, meaning it is easily absorbed and used by the body.

While chicken eggs are most popular in the US, duck, goose, ostrich, emu and quail eggs can also be found mainly in specialty shops, restaurant menus, or local farms. Have you ever eaten a quail or ostrich egg?

Big egg: An ostrich or emu egg, is twenty times as large as a chicken egg. The ivory-colored shell is very thick and hard to crack open.  A single emu egg is equal to about 10 -15 hen’s eggs.

Quail eggs are pretty small (five quail eggs equal to one large chicken egg) with speckled spots on the shell.

Fun facts about eggs:
White eggs come from white hens
Brown eggs come from brown-feathered hens
The egg carton was created in 1918 to prevent eggs from breaking
The egg yolk color depends on the bird’s diet and can range from pale yellow to dark orange.
If you want to hard-boil an ostrich egg, it will take about 1 hour

Free-range eggs are produced by hens that go outdoors daily where they can peck for worms, grubs and insects, and exercise their legs and wings.

Can’t remember if an egg is fresh or hard boiled? Just spin the egg. If it wobbles, it’s raw. If it spins easily, it’s hard boiled. A fresh egg will sink in water, a stale one will float.

BOOK REPORT mable second grade teacher recommends grad season fav

We've gone with a patriotic theme for our Fairmont book report selections this month in honor of Memorial Day, so Dr. Seuss' Oh, the Places You'll Go! is something of a departure.  Consider it our one-and-only pick for graduation season.  You just can't find a more whimsical way to congratulate the new grad in your life or to motivate your little ones to keep up the good work as they approach their own big days.  As Summer Burbage, Mable second grade teacher says, "I believe every student has the ability to "move mountains!"

BOOK REPORT mable fifth grade teacher suggests historical fiction

The Year of the Hangman, by Gary Blackwood is a wonderful piece of historical fiction. In fifth grade, we study American history and the Revolutionary War. This book is a fictional story about what might have been had we lost the war. The story gives insight into what life was like during this time period and also provides an imaginative look at what life could have been like. This book is a page turner and very hard to put down!
