SCHOOL NEWS week of the young child highlights

Fairmont celebrated The Week of the Young Child April 10-16 with special projects and activities to highlight the 2011 national theme: Early Years are Learning Years. The Week of the Young Child, now in its 40th year, is sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) with the purpose of drawing public attention to the needs of young children and their families and to recognize the early childhood programs and services that meet those needs.

Fairmont's Anaheim Hills, Citron, Edgewood and Mable campuses all celebrated their youngest learners with an array of events and activities including a balloon release at the Anaheim Hills campus, an International Food and Fashion Fair at Citron, a carnival at Edgewood, and special "buddy" reader visits at Mable.

Science Fair Update
After the very successful Science Fair last February, twenty students were invited to present their projects at the Orange County Science Fair on April 6. The eleven students below won awards on that day, and six of them will be moving forward to the California State Science fair to be held at USC on May 2nd and 3rd. Four of those students were also Broadcom Master Award winners. Mr. Briner, our science teacher, accompanied our students to the event, and we could all see the high caliber of the projects presented by schools from all over Orange County. Students were judged multiple times within their allotted time, and they had to effectively present and answer demanding questions from the judges. This was an outstanding year for the Mable students at the Fair, and we congratulate all of the participants and winners for their impressive performance.

SNACK TIME celebrate soy

During April, National Soyfoods Month, try incorporating this healthy option into one of your family's meals.

Over a third of Americans enjoy a dinner that includes soyfoods, that is, food made from soybeans. Soyfoods include products made from tofu-and edamame.

Tofu, or bean curd, is a soft cheese-like food made that is made by curdling soy milk with a coagulant*. The curds are pressed into rectangular or square blocks, similar to the way cheese is made with milk curds. Tofu is made in a variety of textures—soft, firm, and extra-firm—that have different purposes. Tofu has very little flavor on its own, so it can be used either in savory or sweet dishes, and it is often seasoned or marinated to suit the dish.

Edamame is young soybeans, usually still in the pod. Because the beans are young and green when they are picked, edamame soybeans are soft and edible, not hard and dry like the mature soybeans which are used to make soy milk and tofu.

Some grocery stores sell green edamame that has been hulled (beans have been removed) resulting in just the beans. This hulled edamame is great for making salads or adding to rice dishes but also as a flavorful, nutritious snack on its own!

Soyfoods, like tofu and edemame are easy to digest, low in fat and sodium, and a good source of B vitamins and calcium plus and isoflavones.

Tofu is an exceptional food—not only because it is highly nutritious, but because it can be prepared in such a remarkably wide variety of ways. The uses for tofu are limited only by a chef’s imagination.

Soyfoods are easy to prepare and simple to incorporate into your favorite dishes. Here are some ways to increase soy in your diet:

Breakfast: Try soymilk on hot or cold cereal with some berries
Lunch: Try deli alternatives like soy “hot dogs” that taste great and offer all the benefits of soy.
Dinner: Meat alternatives are easy, try making tacos with soy crumbles in place of ground beef
Snack: Soyfood snacks like whole soy nutrition bars, soy yogurt and soy pudding

Any time snacks: trade the candy box for something healthier: soy nuts covered in milk chocolate or a vanilla yogurt-based coating.
Or
Soynuts:  offer a solid crunch, and are found flavored with seasonings of barbeque, teriyaki, onion, garlic or just plain.
Or
Edamame  - steamed young soybeans served in-the-pod can be a fun treat, hot or cold.

Soyfoods are a nutritious option for children and busy families. Plus they taste great!

Junior High Students Recognized
On March 31, our junior high students gathered for a special assembly to recognize high academic achievement during the second trimester. Though we all know that there are many ways of recognition and that grades are only a partial reflection of who young people are, it was a pleasure to recognize the hard work by the students below. Honor Roll status is granted to students who are able to maintain a 3.5 GPA during a trimester, and Director's Honor Roll is for students who achieve a 90% or higher in all their core subjects. We congratulate the recipients of these distinctions as well as their families, and we wish these fine students continued success.

SHOW & TELL

Devastation in the Land of the Rising Sun
With countless deaths and over ten thousand missing, fear and devastation are streaming through Japan. On March 11, Sendai was hit with a 9.1 earthquake followed by over 300 aftershocks that could be felt by the citizens of Tokyo, nearly 200 miles away.

Minutes after the earthquake, a 30 foot wall of water slammed into the coast causing more damage as it pushed houses from their foundations and swept cars and boats away as if they were toys.

After the flood waters began to recede, the true devastation became clear. A nuclear power plant on the North Coast of Honshu was damaged and is currently overheating. In a last-ditch attempt to cool the radioactive core, sea water was hauled in and poured into the reactor. Teams of employees, including the famous Fukushima 50, the  first wave of workers to reenter the plant, has been working tirelessly to restore power and reengage the central cooling system.

The emperor of Japan has released a message to his people saying to not give up hope and to stay strong. As they battle diminishing resources, the people of Japan are forced to salvage what they can. Food and water are scarce, and trucks carrying stock and supplies are often deterred by damaged roads. Amazingly, the people of Japan have maintained their compassion; coupled with every report of devastation is a story of humanitarian understanding and respect.

Piggy Banks for Japan
Two of Mable's fifth grade girls had an idea to help the people of Japan.  What if they put piggy banks in each classroom?  Would people contribute enough money to fill them?  After talking with their mothers, Alyssa Goh and Nathalie Song put together a plan and presented it to Mrs. Calabria.

On Thursday, March 24, banks and fliers were distributed to every classroom on Mable Campus.  Posters, made by the girls, went up in the well-traveled areas, like the library. Their goal?  To end up with $1 per student.  Judging from the enthusiastic response from students and teachers alike, they will have much more to present to the American Red Cross to benefit Japanese relief efforts. Banks will be collected on Thursday March 31. This is citizenship in action, and we are proud to say these girls are a part of our Fairmont Community.

SNACK TIME eat right with color

March is National Nutrition Month! This year's theme, "Eat Right with Color," provides an easy way to focus on improving eating habits — simply include plenty of color on your plate!

National Nutrition Month is an annual campaign sponsored by the American Dietetic Association (www.eatright.org) to promote nutrition awareness and education. This month the American Dietetic Association wants you to make healthy choices by incorporating a colorful variety of fruits and vegetables into your meals every day.

A rainbow of foods contributes a variety of nutrients, each with different potential benefits. A varied diet supplies different nutrients, so maximize the nutritional value of your meal, by including healthful choices in a variety of colors."

Green. These foods contain special compounds called indoles, that help the liver and intestinal tract get rid of harmful compounds and may help reduce cancer risks.
Examples include broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, bok choy, spinach and kale.

Orange and deep yellow fruits and vegetables contain vitamin C, and alpha and beta-carotenes which protect cell membranes, improve night vision, and may reduce the risk of cancer. Examples include oranges, tangerines, papayas, apricot, cantaloupe, grapefruit, mango, papaya, pineapple, carrots, yellow pepper, yellow corn, squash and sweet potatoes.

Purple and blue fruits and vegetables contain anthocyanins that may have antioxidant and anti-aging benefits and may help with memory, urinary tract health and reduced cancer risks.
Examples include blackberries, blueberries, plums, raisins, eggplant, and purple cabbage.

Red produce contain compounds that are rich in lycopene, which reduces cancer risk by ridding the body of free radicals that can damage genes. They may help to maintain a healthy heart, vision, immunity and may reduce cancer risks.
Examples include cherries, cranberries, pomegranate, red/pink grape fruit, red grapes, watermelon, beets, red onions, red peppers, red potatoes, rhubarb and tomatoes.

White, tan and brown foods contain flavonoids that protect cell membranes which may then support heart health and reduce cancer risks.
Examples include banana, pears, dates, cauliflower, mushrooms, garlic, onions, parsnips, turnips, white-fleshed potato and white corn.

Earlier this month, Fairmont’s Mabel campus participated in open house and children and parents helped themselves to red delicious apples loaded with phyto nutrients!
For more tips visit the National Nutrition Month section. Plenty of resources are available, including recipes, interactive games, nutrition education resources and the NNM blog.

SHOW & TELL
7th Graders Attend Prep's Around the World Day
On March 18th, seventh graders from Mable, Edgewood, and Anaheim Hills campuses hopped on a school bus and traveled to the Fairmont Preparatory Academy to celebrate "Around the World Day." After proceeding to the auditorium and theater, the students listened intently to a pleasant presentation about the classes available at the Prep. Included were AP Math courses, the Medical Magnet program, and the Engineering Magnet program. Many students agreed that the best part was when Mr. Yoon, the theatre teacher, showed the students a mini movie about the theater arts course. One student, Dev Shah, said, "I loved it! Mr. Yoon was hilarious!"

After the presentation, the students made their way to the gym. The UCI CAMA group performed astonishing feats of martial arts. After that, the students stared in amazement as a gentleman displayed his vocal talents in a mix of beat-boxing and rapping. In a grand finale, a group of talented dancers left the crowd in awe with a display of break dancing.

For lunch, the 7th graders had a choice between California rolls and Lebanese cheese pies. They also had the option of purchasing Lollicup boba teas, baked goods from the 85 Degrees Celsius Bakery, and other refreshments. All proceeds went to the Japanese tsunami relief effort. A lion and a snake were also there for students' enjoyment.

All in all, the seventh graders enjoyed a fabulous, fun-filled day.  Many look forward to experiencing day a like this when they are students at the Prep!

BOOK REPORT mable mixes it up with math rhymes

The Best of Times
by Greg Tang
Ages 4-8

The author of The Grapes of Math and Math for All Seasons, Greg Tang, continues his crusade to make math make sense by taking on the biggest of math bugbears: the multiplication tables! Greg Tang's proven methods--giving kids tools rather than rules and more memorization--pay off once again, as he uses rhymes and commonsense tricks to walk through the multiplication tables from zero to 10. For example, if you know how to multiply by two ("Two is very fast and fun, quickly double and you're done. What's that you say, be more precise? Okay then, just add it twice!"), then fours ("... please just always double twice!") and eights ("... doubling three times works just great!") should be a cinch. Some of the rhymes are even as clever as Tang's tips: Over a panda pool game, he advises, "Nine is faster to compute if at first you overshoot. Here's a very clever tack, do 10 times and then subtract! What is 9 x 9? It's ten 9's minus 9.... What is 9 x 7? It's ten 7's minus 7."--Amazon.com

This book is so much fun to read because it helps you learn how to multiply with rhyming words.  You also learn some tricks that allow you to multiply even faster.  This book has great illustrations and a different animal for each times table.  Plus, it gives you problems to try on your own! Do you know your multiplication facts?

On March 12, seven junior high students participated in the Sage Hill Mathematics Invitational. The goal of this team-based competition is to promote and celebrate mathematics by providing a fun environment for middle school students to collaborate and share their interests.

Mable's seventh grade team consisted of David K. as team captain, Kaitlynn C. and Tarek S. Their team was awarded the third place overall team winner. The eighth grade team consisted of Justin L. as team captain, Joshua C., Ryan H. and Meeran I. They received first place in five categories of the competition: Mental Math, Algebra, Data Analysis and Probability, Reasoning and Proof and Measurement and were awarded second place overall team winner. Ryan H. had a perfect score in Mental Math.

TEACHER'S PET mia and macy

These are our dogs Mia and Macy! They love to get in the sheets right out of the dryer and bury themselves. Gia named Mia (the one in the back). She is our newest addition. Both dogs are very lovable and Gia plays with them constantly. The picture below is of Mia behind my computer. I got lucky and had the camera ready. The dogs like to sit on my lap and climb on the desk while I work. It makes it hard to get anything done when you have such a cutie on the other side of the monitor!

TEACHER'S PET molly the jindo mix

Molly is a 1-year old Jindo mix. She is a rescue from the Pasadena Humane Society. Her favorite activities are going on walks, running around in circles, destroying toys that we buy her, and sitting at my feet, demanding love. Thoroughly spoiled, she knows COME, SIT, and HIGH-FIVE. We are currently working on FETCH and MAKE LATTE.

Congratulations to Raffle Winners
This week in celebration of those families who took advantage of priority registration two students' names were chosen for  "Director for a Day" at Wednesday's Flag Salute.  Daphne S. won for the grades 2-3 category, and Brianna D. won for the grades 4-5 category.  Next year, the girls will have a day in which they take over Mrs. Calabria's office and experience what it is like to run the school. After having had a chance to test drive the director's chair, they started to think of ideas for their special day. (Hmmm...do you think they will grant free dress or plan some other fun activity?)  During next week's Junior High Assembly, another lucky student will be chosen to represent grades 5-7. It's not too late to submit your re-enrollment contract to be eligible for this drawing on Thursday.

Also during the Parent Association Meeting on March 10, another drawing was held for a month of reserved parking. The names of nine children were drawn, one per month for the months of September 2011 through May 2012.  Their parents will enjoy their own parking space for a month. Mrs. Leyson was present at the meeting and shared her "happy dance" when she received the news.  All families that submit their re-enrollment contracts by next parent meeting will be eligible to win a free week of summer camp.

Winners of Reserved Parking Space for the 2011-2012 School Year:
September:  Sydney Garabedian
October:  Nishtha Arya
November: Patricia Martinez
December:  Rowan Leyson
January: Girish Bawa
February: Michelle Phan
March: Kenneth Eun
April: Milan Robinson
Congratulations to all our winners!
