A to Z: in support of the student athlete

In the pursuit of academic success, children sometimes need a break from the classroom and an opportunity to release pent-up energy. While academic success is no small feat, students who participate in at least one extracurricular physical activity are proven to reap more benefits than those who do not exercise regularly.

Engaging in sports activities each week helps improve students’ focus on school work, as well as help them lead happier, healthier lives. Here are four reasons why students should be involved in structured, after-school physical activities.

  1. Academic Performance - Studies show that students involved in athletic programs maintain a higher GPA and achieve higher test scores. SPARKpe.org provides a list of recent studies proving the correlation between academic success and physical fitness.
  2. Fitness Habits - Sports help students develop coordination and teaches them how to care for their bodies through proper stretching and the development of fundamental mechanics. Participating in athletics at an early age instills physical fitness habits that carry over into adulthood, helping to avoid health problems.
  3. Mental and Emotional Benefits - Athletics have great physical benefits, but also help children to improve mentally and emotionally. While the body exercises, the brain releases endorphines. From a biological standpoint alone, students who are physically active are happier and have a constructive outlet through which to relieve stress.
  4. Development of Specific Skills - Through athletics, students are able to accumulate a whole host of skills and abilities. Leadership, teamwork, confidence, and self-reliance are the big character focuses. Critical thinking is developed on the playing field as athletes need to quickly solve problems created by their opponents. Time management, a skill necessary in adulthood, is also brought into play as children learn to balance their time between schoolwork, sports, and family life.

Even if your child is not interested in team sports, there are plenty of less intense, solitary options. Activities such as swimming, gymnastics, track, martial arts, yoga, and golf provide physical benefits and allow students to engage in an extracurricular activity where they can advance at their own pace.

SNACKTIME: Healthy Meal and Snack Suggestions for Keeping Your Student Athlete Strong and Fit

Maximize Your Students’ Athletic Performance and Recovery with Meals and Snacks that Make Sense!

Start the Day Strong with Breakfast

Food is fuel. The body needs protein, carbohydrates, and fat at every meal.  Most food contains a combination of each of these nutrients. Whole grain cereal and milk (dairy, soy, or almond) contribute carbs and protein with the right amount of fat. Protein is important for building muscle. Good sources of animal protein include eggs, turkey bacon, and dairy products. Vegetarian sources include tofu and nuts (PB and jelly anyone?)

Carbohydrate Fuels Muscle Cells
Carbohydrates, stored in the body in the form of glycogen, power muscles during exercise and replenish the liver after physical activity.  Maximize glycogen reserves during meal time with complex carbohydrates such as whole grain rice, potatoes, quinoa, potato, corn, sweet potato, and legumes (baked beans anyone?)

High carb snacks include yogurt, whole-grain bagels with peanut butter, fruit or juice, energy bars, and trail mix (nuts, dried fruit, seeds and maybe some dark chocolate chips). Lean meat combined with vegetables and a starchy side dish (potato, rice or whole grain) balance out the dinner.

Hydrate

What you drink is as important as what you eat. Staying well hydrated is essential for sustaining optimal energy levels, as well as preventing muscle cramping and maintaining a safe core body temperature. Yogurt, soup, smoothies, fresh vegetables, and fruits (especially watermelon) all have a high fluid content. Drink plenty of water and stay away from drinks that have heavy amounts of sugar or other forms of sweeteners.

Food is Fuel
Athletes should eat throughout the day to maintain high energy levels. It is recommended to have a healthy meal or snack every three to four hours and avoid long stretches of time without eating.

January 11, 2011

Final Score: Mable defeats Oakridge: 19-10

The Lady Panthers pulled off a great performance in their win against the Heritage Oak Huskies. We fell behind in the first quarter, 1-6, but picked it up in the second half from the great floor leadership of Sheryne N. Sheryne was able to score several lay-ups, and connected on most of her free throws to help lead our team to a victory. We held the visiting team to only two points in the second half with great defense from Karla G., Risha B., and Madi N. Even though Heritage Oak put up a great trapping defense, our team was able to move to open spots, took great shots, rebounded well, and simply never gave up. The entire team played excellent Fairmont Panther Basketball.

SCOREBOARD game highlights: anaheim hills dsl football & volleyball

Great way to finish the season for our DSL Football and Volleyball teams! Both teams won their last game of the season.  The Volleyball team won in two games: 25-10, 25-21!  They served beautifully, dominating the Heritage Oak Huskies.  Keely D., Jessica C. and Joelle K. were strong on the court in the first game and Lauren M., Naomi M. and Marie V. were on fire in the second game!  They are looking forward to continuing their success in the next season.
The Cougars finished on a high note defeating Heritage Oak 25 to 12.  The cougars fell behind early 6 to 0 but were able to answer back by scoring on a long pass from Cole M. to Nathan L. After trailing 12 to 6 the Cougars got a key defensive stop and were able to take advantage of the good field position.  Andy C. scored on a 35 yard run to tie the score at 12.  The Cougars would never again trail in the game.  Cole and Nathan hooked up again on a long touchdown pass and Andy had another long touchdown run to complete the cougar scoring.  Defensively the Cougars got great play from Matthew W. and Parker L. The Cougars ended the season 3-3, but the improvement was amazing and wonderful to see.
