Open House Highlights
Open House was a great success this year!  Over 2000 parents and students attended this amazing event.  All the Junior High, Elementary and Pre-school classrooms looked absolutely spectacular.  The teachers and students have worked so hard to show off all their progress this year.  Cougar Chorus and the cast of "Grease" performed in the MPR while the book fair was going on!  The FPA had a great silent auction going on in the gym and Nutrition Management Services had yummy treats in the cafeteria.  The 2011 summer camp program "The Great Outdoors" kicked off in the wonderful forest room.
Thank you to everyone that attended!

Student Spotlight
Congratulations to Ted Y. (Mrs. Cornish's 4th Grade Class) for taking 1st place state-wide  for the 2010 Energy Appreciation Day Power Draw Contest.   The Anaheim Hills 4th Grade students recently participated in a comic strip contest hosted by California's Energy Coalition.  These students, as well as many other students from schools throughout California, created a comic strip which illustrated how to use the 4 Peak Energy Actions to save energy at home and/or school.   "PEAK is a comprehensive standards-base educational program designed to empower elementary and middle school students with the knowledge to manage energy use in their homes, schools, and communities.  The Peak Student Energy Actions Program was recently recognized as the best children's environmental education program in the state."   We are very proud of Ted and this wonderful achievement!

Preston G. starts a "Book Club"
Third Grader, Preston loves to read and has started a "Book Club" !  Her neighborhood has a "Kid's Club" and she asked if she could start a "Book Club" also.  The kids in the club vote for the book that they all want to read, and then meet to discuss the story as they are reading.  She has three reading groups, 3-5 years old, 6-9 years old and 10 and up so they can pick a book that is age-appropriate.  Preston's favorite books are the Judy Moody series, the Stink series and Berenstein Bears series!

SNACK TIME healthy hearts for february

February is American Heart Month, a time to be aware of and encourage behaviors that support heart health. The heart is a strong muscle that pumps blood to deliver oxygen and nutrients to every part of the body. Physical activity and the foods you eat can have long-lasting effects on heart health. Whole grains, vegetables, fruits, fish and beans are high in nutrients such as vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants that support and protect the heart.

Whole grains such as oats and oatmeal are especially heart-healthy because they contain beta-glucan, (BAYTAH-glew-can) a compound that lowers the risk of disease by lowering fat levels in the blood linked to heart disease (LDL cholesterol). The fiber in oats also digests more slowly, helping to keep hunger away and keep blood sugar levels within a normal range.

Valentine’s Day (February 14), is often celebrated by eating chocolate, frequently in the shape of a heart. DO you know how chocolate is made? Chocolate is made by processing cocoa powder from the seeds of the Cacao tree.

Americans eat more than 13 pounds of chocolate per person per year, but the Swiss eat more chocolate than any other country in the world – 22 pounds per person each year. That’s a lot of chocolate! Because chocolate is made with sugar and can be high in calories, eat it only as a special treat and be sure to balance it by eating healthy foods the rest of the day.

BOOK REPORT anaheim hills suggests series for 4th-6th graders

If you'd like to get your kids "hooked" on reading, book series are the way to go.  They provide an extended storyline with compelling characters and plots that keep children engaged from book to book to book.  (Think of all the young readers hooked on the most most popular book series ever--the Harry Potter stories!) Here are a  few suggestions for 4th-6th grade students:

The Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling
The Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan
A Series of Unfortunate Events series by Lemony Snicket
The Fablehaven series by Brandon Mull
The Charlie Bone series by Jenny Nimmo
The Warriors series by Erin Hunter

...and one of my personal favorites is the Uglies series by Scott
Westerfeld which is more aimed at the 6th grade level.

FACULTY LOUNGE anaheim hills' spotlights susanna deleon

Junior High Spanish teacher Susanna DeLeon came to Fairmont’s Anaheim Hills campus in 2003 as the Spanish teacher for 3rd-8th grade students.  As the junior high program grew, she moved over to work with junior high students exclusively.  She has a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a master’s degree in Education, both from Loyola Marymount University.  Susanna loves to travel, especially to her husband’s native state of Hawaii.  She also enjoys baking, crafting, and reading-- including biographies and her latest favorite the “Twilight” series.

“I love interacting with our junior high students and getting to know them better each of the three years I am their teacher.  It’s so rewarding seeing the growth they experience as students from 6th-8th grades,” says Susanna who has been so impressed with Fairmont that she now sends her own children here.

TEACHER'S PET latte and jager

Latte is a 14 month old vizsla/collie mix, and her sister, Jager, is a black lab and just celebrated her first birthday. Latte & Jager’s favorite pastimes include tearing up couch cushions from the patio furniture, chasing the cats around the house, and spending hours on end fetching balls at the Huntington Dog Beach. Latte & Jager’s proud parents are Mr. Wesley Faust, junior high math teacher from Anaheim Hills, and Mrs. Wendy Faust, activities director at the Prep.

TEACHER'S PET ramone the weimaraner

My name is Daniel, and I am a 2nd grader at Mable. I would like to introduce you to my best friend Ramone. He is a 3 1/2 year old male Weimaraner dog. My family and I got Ramone when he was a puppy at about 3 months old and he has been in the family since then. He is a happy, loving, intelligent dog, but can also be very brave and protective at times. He doesn't do very well with small pets because of his hunting instinct, but he's great with people. He loves to take walks along the river and loves to play wrestling with daddy and I. He is always full of energy and almost never gets tired. He weights about 90 pounds and can knock me down easily, but only when we play since he would never try to hurt me. He is the greatest friend I ever had!

Junior High Science Lab 'Physics'! Speed and how is it measured?
Junior High students learned how to calculate speed with variables of weight and slope.  They worked as a group to design experiments with downhill speed using a car and ramp.  In each experiment they needed to hypothesize how each variable would affect the speed of the car on the ramp.  They recorded their hypothesis, procedure, measurements, and conclusions; and then the experimental variable, distance, time and calculated speed.  This lesson really helps students visualize the lessons they have been taught in the lecture section of the science classes.

WordMasters
Two students representing Fairmont Private School-Anaheim Hills recently won highest honors in this year's WordMasters Challenge-a national language arts competition entered by aproximately 220,000 students annually, which consists of three separate meets held at

Competing in the very difficult Gold Division of the Challenge, eighth graders Rebecca Choi and Yvonne Kim both earned perfect scores in the year's first meet, held in December.  In the entire country only 51 eighth graders acheived perfect results.  Other students at the school who also achieved outstanding results in the meet included fourth graders Alexandra Brondum, Anastasia Huddleston, Channing Lee, Sunny Yang, Jelissa Lin, Sarah Hsiao, Mariano Chacon and Ava Malakooti; sixth grader Zoe Wang; seventh graders Lauren Lee, Ezekial Levin, Megan Mettler, Yannie Hoang, Nicole Kuntjoro, and Brittney Nguyen;and eighth graders Kayla Bach, Aaron Su, and Emily Yang.

The WordMasters Challenge is an exercise in critical thinking that first encourages students to become familiar with a set of interesting new words (considerably harder than grade level), and then challenges them to use words to complete analogies expressing various kinds of logical relationships.

Mrs. Carroll's Class Celebrates Martin Luther King Jr. Day
During the week of January 10, 2011 and prior to the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday, third graders learned about Martin Luther King, Jr.  We started reading the story My Brother Martin from our Treasures textbook which shared information written by Martin's sister, Christine King Farris.  Ms. Farris wanted boys and girls to know that her famous brother was once a kid just like them, and how ordinary people can grow up to do great things.  In addition to other activities, students made an "I Have A Dream" mobile where they stated their own dreams for their community, their country, and the world.  The week concluded when students watched Rev. King deliver his  famous "I Have A Dream" speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.

Junior High Spirit Day!
In conjunction with the winter sports pep rally, junior high ASB leaders held their second spirit day.  The purpose of spirit day is to increase school spirit through a modified dress code and spirit activities.  The ASB chose Rainbow of Colors as their free dress theme and each grade was given two colors of the rainbow to wear on spirit day.  Following the pep rally, where the 4th graders were able to make more noise than the 5th through 8th graders, the 5th graders were invited to stay and watch a few fun spirit competitions.  ASB president and vice president Rebecca Choi and River Crawford first demonstrated and then presided over a goofy human wheelbarrow, leapfrog, and duck-walk race was followed by a Lucky Charms marshmallow toss, and ended with the building of human rainbows.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT anaheim hills pianist plays carnegie hall

How many kids can say they've played at Carnegie Hall?  Not many.  But, the Anaheim Hills campus is home to one such talented student.  Fourth grader Allison To is an accomplished pianist.  She is also a very skilled violinist.  Allison has won multiple awards in numerous competitions such as SYMF (Southwestern Youth Music Festival), MTAC (Music Teachers’ Association of California) festivals, the Long Beach Mozart Festival, and was awarded Gold Medal at the 2010 International Young Musician’s Competition. In the same year, Allison gave her debut performance at Carnegie Hall in New York.  Her favorite subject is math and she enjoys shopping, drawing, and playing with her best friend Suma, her Maltese dog.  She currently studies piano under the direction of Ariel Yang at Opus119, the school of music’s prestigious Conservatory Program.
