Open House Highlights
Open House was a great success this year!  Over 2000 parents and students attended this amazing event.  All the Junior High, Elementary and Pre-school classrooms looked absolutely spectacular.  The teachers and students have worked so hard to show off all their progress this year.  Cougar Chorus and the cast of "Grease" performed in the MPR while the book fair was going on!  The FPA had a great silent auction going on in the gym and Nutrition Management Services had yummy treats in the cafeteria.  The 2011 summer camp program "The Great Outdoors" kicked off in the wonderful forest room.
Thank you to everyone that attended!

Student Spotlight
Congratulations to Ted Y. (Mrs. Cornish's 4th Grade Class) for taking 1st place state-wide  for the 2010 Energy Appreciation Day Power Draw Contest.   The Anaheim Hills 4th Grade students recently participated in a comic strip contest hosted by California's Energy Coalition.  These students, as well as many other students from schools throughout California, created a comic strip which illustrated how to use the 4 Peak Energy Actions to save energy at home and/or school.   "PEAK is a comprehensive standards-base educational program designed to empower elementary and middle school students with the knowledge to manage energy use in their homes, schools, and communities.  The Peak Student Energy Actions Program was recently recognized as the best children's environmental education program in the state."   We are very proud of Ted and this wonderful achievement!

Preston G. starts a "Book Club"
Third Grader, Preston loves to read and has started a "Book Club" !  Her neighborhood has a "Kid's Club" and she asked if she could start a "Book Club" also.  The kids in the club vote for the book that they all want to read, and then meet to discuss the story as they are reading.  She has three reading groups, 3-5 years old, 6-9 years old and 10 and up so they can pick a book that is age-appropriate.  Preston's favorite books are the Judy Moody series, the Stink series and Berenstein Bears series!

FRIDAY FOLDER mable campus february 25

SHOW & TELL
Fairmont Actors Bring New Play to Life
On January 28, 2011, the junior high drama class performed in the world premier of The Peculiar Kids of Peculiar Junior High. This was an original play conceived by the students and written just for them by professional playwright, Sharyn Rothstein. This is the second play that Ms. Rothstein, based in New York City, has written for Fairmont.

Students explored many different themes and plot ideas through a class assignment before deciding to tackle bullying. The class wanted to create a comedy with a message, and with Ms. Rothstein's help, they were very successful!

Set in the 1980's, with a soundtrack and fashions that brought many parents and teachers "What was I thinking" memories, the play takes place in Peculiar Junior High School.  We find the five coolest students from LaSalle have recently been transferred to Peculiar.  With their hair teased high and clad in bright neon colors, they are confident that they will be just as popular at Peculiar as they were in their last school. When they enter, Peculiar feels more like the twilight zone. Pants pulled high, sweater vests, thick glasses, and flat hair are all in fashion here. If you want to be anyone important, better brush up on your spelling and math. Being a great chess player won't hurt you either.

The new students quickly find out that fitting in is not easy!  Throughout the journey of the play, the new students try to manipulate and bully the others into thinking and being what they perceive as right or wrong. In the end, they all discover that by respecting each other's differences and being true to whom they are brings happiness to all the students.

As an audience member, you could see the actors' full commitment to the characters they created.  Interesting walks, facial expressions, and character voices were all implemented to tell the story of each character.
The tremendously talented cast worked extensively on bringing its characters to life on the stage, and focused and hilarious when telling this story. Even more impressive, each actor had a part in the back-stage elements of the production. The students accomplished building the story, costumes, sets, props, stage management, assistant directing, and running crew. Very impressive indeed!

Fairmont's Super Spellers
Every year grades 2-8 participate in Fairmont's Spelling Bee. It is a fun and exciting time for both the students and the teachers. The words are provided to Fairmont by Scripps National Spelling Bee. They are challenging and showcase our student's ability to "perform" under pressure. This past Wednesday was the fifth grade Spelling Bee. Our students rose to the occasion as they were asked to spell words such as bereavement, seismologist, and elucidate. Nicole N, came in first place spelling the very difficult word prevaricate. Michael K. and Gurveer S. worked very hard and tied for second place.

Another one of Fairmont's super spellers is 7th grader Michelle P. Michelle just passed the first round of the county spelling bee and will compete in the oral round on Saturday, February 26. We are so proud of all of our Fairmont spellers and look forward to next year's spelling challenge!

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT edgewood eighth grader does it all

Edgewood eighth grader Amanda C. is a multi-talented dynamo.  This perpetual member of the Honor Roll, who has spent the last six years as a member of the Fairmont Schools family, knows how to make use of her time.  In addition to playing volleyball and having major roles in all three junior high drama productions, she counts president of the ASB and co-captain of the national-second-place-winning Eagles cheerleading squad among her on-campus accomplishments.  Outside of school, she has won first place awards for dance team performances, studies gymnastics, and will soon be presented with the Founders Award from the National Charity League - an honor held for those who volunteer for a minimum of 10 organizations each year.  In her "spare time," she likes to hang out with friends and family and to design clothes, which is a passion she hopes to turn into a career in the fashion industry.  Make sure to say hello to this very friendly eighth grader the next time she passes by. That is, if you can catch her!

SNACK TIME healthy hearts for february

February is American Heart Month, a time to be aware of and encourage behaviors that support heart health. The heart is a strong muscle that pumps blood to deliver oxygen and nutrients to every part of the body. Physical activity and the foods you eat can have long-lasting effects on heart health. Whole grains, vegetables, fruits, fish and beans are high in nutrients such as vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants that support and protect the heart.

Whole grains such as oats and oatmeal are especially heart-healthy because they contain beta-glucan, (BAYTAH-glew-can) a compound that lowers the risk of disease by lowering fat levels in the blood linked to heart disease (LDL cholesterol). The fiber in oats also digests more slowly, helping to keep hunger away and keep blood sugar levels within a normal range.

Valentine’s Day (February 14), is often celebrated by eating chocolate, frequently in the shape of a heart. DO you know how chocolate is made? Chocolate is made by processing cocoa powder from the seeds of the Cacao tree.

Americans eat more than 13 pounds of chocolate per person per year, but the Swiss eat more chocolate than any other country in the world – 22 pounds per person each year. That’s a lot of chocolate! Because chocolate is made with sugar and can be high in calories, eat it only as a special treat and be sure to balance it by eating healthy foods the rest of the day.

BOOK REPORT anaheim hills suggests series for 4th-6th graders

If you'd like to get your kids "hooked" on reading, book series are the way to go.  They provide an extended storyline with compelling characters and plots that keep children engaged from book to book to book.  (Think of all the young readers hooked on the most most popular book series ever--the Harry Potter stories!) Here are a  few suggestions for 4th-6th grade students:

The Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling
The Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan
A Series of Unfortunate Events series by Lemony Snicket
The Fablehaven series by Brandon Mull
The Charlie Bone series by Jenny Nimmo
The Warriors series by Erin Hunter

...and one of my personal favorites is the Uglies series by Scott
Westerfeld which is more aimed at the 6th grade level.

BOOK REPORT edgewood's pick is a runaway success

What child hasn't daydreamed about running away from home to a life of adventure?  The two protagonists in this Newbery-award-winning book, do just that.  And what a time they have exploring the treasures in New York City's Metropolitan Museum of Art. A read aloud for the younger set, this book is sure to pique the imagination of 2nd-6th graders.

From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler
by E L Konigsburg

Twelve year-old Claudia Kincaid decides to run away from the life she finds boring and parents she thinks do not appreciate her. She chooses her younger brother to run away with her to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. One morning, they board the school bus carrying everything they will need to run away in Jamie's trumpet case. When everybody else gets off the bus, the brother and sister hide until the bus driver is gone. Then they sneak off the bus and use some of the money Claudia has been hoarding to board a train for New York City.

Once there, they walk to the museum. The museum guard takes them for members of a school tour and they make it inside the amazing museum. In the museum, they look around until closing time, when they go to the bathroom and hide in a stall, carefully keeping their feet up, so the guard will not see them.

Claudia and Jamie settle in at the museum, blending in with school groups on field trips during the day to learn more about the museum's exhibits. They bathe in the museum's fountain, picking up "wishing coins," and sleep on Marie Antoinette's bed.

During their stay, they become fascinated with the newest exhibit: a beautiful statue of an angel, thought to be the work of Michelangelo. Researching the statue, they discover that a Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, from Farmington, Connecticut, sold it to the museum. They spend the last of their money traveling to Mrs. Frankweiler's house, where they discover the angel's secret, hidden in the much disorganized files in Mrs. Frankweiler's office. Afterward, she sends them home in her Rolls-Royce to their worried parents and siblings.

4th Grade to Mission San Juan Capistrano
The fourth grade toured Mission San Juan Capistrano and we learned why it is called the “Jewel” of all the missions. It is called the “Jewel” because it was the very first mission to be built and it is the only mission that still has its original structure. We were met by very enthusiastic docents who showed us all of the major rooms and sites at the mission. Some interesting things we saw were the church, which had walls made of gold imported from Italy, the start of an aqueduct that supplied water to thousands of acres, the barracks where the Spanish soldiers slept, and each student made their own adobe brick. After studying the mission system in California, it was wonderful to be able to visit one that is located to so close to us.

Edgewood Parking Lot Reminders
1) Parents need to enter the church parking lot from Vanderlip ONLY. We want to have one way traffic in that parking lot. If they ask another person (grandparent, friend etc) to pick/drop off their child, they need to inform that person of the procedure
2) Parents need to slow down in all the parking lots.
3) No parking on the red curb.

A Golden Ticket
A Golden Ticket! That's what the students in Mrs. Kaneski's second grade class are trying to earn. Students are encouraged to show love, kindness and respect to their classmates and teachers.  Each time a student is recognized for showing this type of good character, they write their name on the back of a yellow ticket and drop it in the container. Every Thursday, a ticket is randomly drawn and that student is invited to a special 'date' with Mrs. Kaneski. Students may choose to have breakfast or lunch on Friday- just the 2 of us! My first student was Riley Bovee! Riley and I enjoyed a breakfast together on Friday morning- a memory that will keep me smiling all day!
♥ Thank you Riley ♥

Afterschool Supervision Improvements
Dear Edgewood Parents/Guardians,
A few months ago we asked our teachers to contact you to see how the school year is going. Thank you for the feedback that you gave to the teachers. It has provided us with valuable information that is being used to refine what we do here at the Edgewood campus.

A number of parents mentioned safety during the after-school extended day program as an area of concern. There are a large number of students out on the yard each day between 2:30 and 3:45 p.m. Our staff supervises each area of the yard during this time, but the sheer volume of students makes effective supervision a challenge.

In order to address this situation, we will implement some changes to the after-school program beginning Tuesday, March 1st. We believe that these changes will provide a more positive environment for our students.  Our teachers and extended day staff will be involved in putting the new guidelines into action.

We understand that change can sometimes be confusing, and so we will have a "help" table set-up outside of the main office. A staff member will be there to answer your questions and to help you determine where your child may be picked up. Car loading procedures are NOT affected by these changes. The new guidelines apply to the students who are on the yard but will not affect  the students who report to car loading immediately after school.

I thank you in advance for your support of the changes and trust that by working together we can make Edgewood an even better place for all children.

Regards,
Doyle Smiens

From Your Admissions Director
It's hard to imagine that this is my eighteenth year at the Edgewood campus. During these many years I have watched your children grow and develop into successful students who make me very proud. Each child is special to us here at the Edgewood campus. With parents on one side and the school on the other, students are guided towards a bright future. Their continuing success is dependent upon a challenging academic environment that is balanced by the attention and care of a dedicated faculty and staff.

The re-enrollment season has begun, and you should have received your re-enrollment pack by now. Every Edgewood student who re-enrolls for the 2011-2012 school year will receive the 2011/2012 Coupon Book which includes two Free-Dress Passes, two Homework Passes, one Free Lunch, and more. In addition, your student's name will be entered into a raffle for you to win a premium parking space for one month during the 2011/2012 school year. The winners of the monthly parking space raffle will be announced at 7:00 p.m. at Edgewood's upcoming Open House.

As a current family, we encourage you to take advantage of our priority registration period.  Much of our planning for the upcoming school year takes place in the spring.  Timely re-enrollment allows us the opportunity to plan and facilitate the best educational experience possible for our students. As you know, space is limited in several grade levels.  Returning your re-enrollment contract by the deadline of Friday, February 25, will secure your child's place for next year.

If you have a family that you would like us to consider for enrollment, please stop by the admissions office for a new student packet.  First acceptances for 2011/2012 applicants will be mailed to students on our wait list during the first week of March.

We understand that you have many options when choosing a school, and we thank you for your continued trust in allowing us to educate your child.
