SHOW & TELL
Fairmont Actors Bring New Play to Life
On January 28, 2011, the junior high drama class performed in the world premier of The Peculiar Kids of Peculiar Junior High. This was an original play conceived by the students and written just for them by professional playwright, Sharyn Rothstein. This is the second play that Ms. Rothstein, based in New York City, has written for Fairmont.

Students explored many different themes and plot ideas through a class assignment before deciding to tackle bullying. The class wanted to create a comedy with a message, and with Ms. Rothstein's help, they were very successful!

Set in the 1980's, with a soundtrack and fashions that brought many parents and teachers "What was I thinking" memories, the play takes place in Peculiar Junior High School.  We find the five coolest students from LaSalle have recently been transferred to Peculiar.  With their hair teased high and clad in bright neon colors, they are confident that they will be just as popular at Peculiar as they were in their last school. When they enter, Peculiar feels more like the twilight zone. Pants pulled high, sweater vests, thick glasses, and flat hair are all in fashion here. If you want to be anyone important, better brush up on your spelling and math. Being a great chess player won't hurt you either.

The new students quickly find out that fitting in is not easy!  Throughout the journey of the play, the new students try to manipulate and bully the others into thinking and being what they perceive as right or wrong. In the end, they all discover that by respecting each other's differences and being true to whom they are brings happiness to all the students.

As an audience member, you could see the actors' full commitment to the characters they created.  Interesting walks, facial expressions, and character voices were all implemented to tell the story of each character.
The tremendously talented cast worked extensively on bringing its characters to life on the stage, and focused and hilarious when telling this story. Even more impressive, each actor had a part in the back-stage elements of the production. The students accomplished building the story, costumes, sets, props, stage management, assistant directing, and running crew. Very impressive indeed!

Fairmont's Super Spellers
Every year grades 2-8 participate in Fairmont's Spelling Bee. It is a fun and exciting time for both the students and the teachers. The words are provided to Fairmont by Scripps National Spelling Bee. They are challenging and showcase our student's ability to "perform" under pressure. This past Wednesday was the fifth grade Spelling Bee. Our students rose to the occasion as they were asked to spell words such as bereavement, seismologist, and elucidate. Nicole N, came in first place spelling the very difficult word prevaricate. Michael K. and Gurveer S. worked very hard and tied for second place.

Another one of Fairmont's super spellers is 7th grader Michelle P. Michelle just passed the first round of the county spelling bee and will compete in the oral round on Saturday, February 26. We are so proud of all of our Fairmont spellers and look forward to next year's spelling challenge!
