STUDENT SPOTLIGHT anaheim hills shines light on olympic hopeful anastasia huddleston

The Fairmont Anaheim Hills campus is proud to spotlight fourth grader, Anastasia Huddleston in our first “Student Spotlight” feature.  Anastasia has been a student at Fairmont since pre-school and maintains straight A's in Miss Romo’s Fourth Grade class.  She has been figure skating for the last 6 years, since she was 3 years old!  Anastasia skates  6 days a week, for at least 8 hours a week.  Her practices are very intense, but she truly loves working on her routines.  She is coached by two-time Olympic Champion, Ekaterina Gordeeva.  Off the ice, Anastasia works on conditioning, strength training, stretching and ballet to improve her overall skating skills.  She is very competitive and always places high in her competitions; in her last two state-wide events she placed 2nd and 3rd.  Anastasia’s goal is to compete in the Olympics someday.   In addition to figure skating and maintaining straight A’s, Anastasia also attends Russian school on Saturdays, where her favorite subject is drama.  Congratulations, Anastasia, we are so proud of all your successes!

Cougars win 35-6!!

The Cougars defense continues to shut down their competition, beating the TVT Lions 35-6.  Brady L. and Ali A. controlled the defensive tempo of the game not allowing TVT to develop any momentum.  Ezekial L. and Luke H. blocked exceptionally well so that quarterback, Kyle G. had plenty of time to make a few amazing spiral passes.

The Cougars next game is against Heritage Oak on Wednesday, September 29 at the Vineyard Field.  Come out and cheer them on to an undefeated season

SHOW & TELL
Photo of the Week: Lunch with the 8th Grade Girls
4th Grade Science
The fourth grade students had a blast making up their own science experiments!  Both fourth grade classes have been learning about The Scientific Method and were able to come up with their own experiments to show understanding.  After being divided into groups, the creative students were able to come up with questions, develop hypotheses, conduct experiments, and make conclusions.  These questions included, "What type of liquid makes baking soda bubble the most?" "What type of cookie stays crunchiest after two minutes in milk?" and "Does the amount of salt in water affect how fast water cools down?" The students had a great time working and learning together on these hands-on projects.

SHOW & TELL
Junior High Art Project - Wyland Mural Contest
Nineteen Junior High students are busy painting a mural for The Wyland Classroom Mural Contest.  Only 150 schools were selected by the Wyland Foundation to receive a 5' x 10' canvas, paints and brushes.  Students drew pictures of seals, star fish, dolphins, turtles, and other sea life and will each take a turn painting.  The project should be finished in a couple weeks.

Pointillism
Pointillism was developed in France. In pointillism, pure dots of paint are applied to canvas, and when viewed from a distance, the dots seem to merge and create new colors and images.  Mrs. DuClos' 2-8th graders are creating a pointillism of French Impressionist painter, Georges Seurat's, "Sunday Afternoon on the Island of Grande Jatte" painting. The students are using 'dots' of colored paper.  Mrs. DuClos is taking weekly pictures of the progress of this project, and we can't wait to see the finished masterpiece!

Pre-School Grandparents Day Picnic

There were pies, apple chips, juice, muffins, apple sauce, and special treats like apple stickers. Each classroom celebrated Johnny Appleseed’s birthday and learned interesting facts about his life. SHOW & TELL
Blackboard and the Online Classroom

The 2010-2011 academic school year at Fairmont has a newcomer: Blackboard. Blackboard is a learning management system (LMS) which updates students with announcements, homework, interesting facts, and other fun tools.  Students are able to respond to discussions posted by the teacher, comment on their peers' thoughts, and extend the fun of the classroom.  It serves as a communication/teaching tool between school and home and in the future, projects can be completed with Blackboard.  I recently spoke with Ms. Patterson and Ms. Robinette from Fairmont's Education Department to learn more about the new initiative.

Blackboard (Bb) was chosen over other learning management systems by Mr. Alan Rudi, Fairmont's Director of E-Learning. After learning about the website, and realizing its potential, he was sure it was the best fit for Fairmont.  The idea of integrating an LMS came from Mr. Rudi and Mr. Chandler, the CEO of Fairmont, who wanted to provide students with a cutting edge learning tool.

Currently, Blackboard is very popular among colleges and universities, but less than ten percent of the K-12 schools in America use an LMS. Fairmont is one of the elite.  According to the education department, the benefits for Fairmont are long reaching.  Technological integration prepares students for higher education and helps to equip them with necessary skills.

In general, our generation of students is very tech-savvy. They can navigate a webpage, find the answers to our questions, and have access to nearly limitless amounts of information. Recognizing this, the e-learning department sought to fill our needs and speak to us through technology. Blackboard was the way to do this.  Blackboard is cutting edge educational technology, and in the K-12 world, Fairmont is setting the standard for innovation.

Character Counts!
Like many children, Mable Campus sixth grader Tara F. cut her hair over the summer.  However, she didn't do it to keep cool.  Tara donated her hair to Locks of LoveLocks of Love is a non-profit organization that presents hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the United States and Canada, who are under age 21 and suffering from long-term medical hair loss.  The mission of Locks of Love is to return a sense of self, confidence and normalcy to these children.  When asked why she chose to sacrifice her long tresses, Tara replied, "I know that there are many people out there that suffer from illness that causes them to lose their hair, so I figured that I have an opportunity to help them. I would gladly do it again!"

SNACK TIME celebrating national rice month

September is National Rice Month with an entire week (4th week of September) dedicated to recognize a staple food eaten by people all around the world. A versatile grain with over 40,000 varieties, rice can be prepared and eaten for breakfast, as a main meal, a soup or even dessert depending on the ingredients and type of rice used.

Rice comes in various shades of brown, red and even yellow. From a nutrition standpoint brown or whole grain rice is higher in B vitamins, fiber, and trace minerals than white rice which has been processed to remove the outer coating (the bran) and the germ. Rice is high in carbohydrates, easy to digest and provides quick energy for the body to use as fuel.

BOOK REPORT edgewood students get defensive

You never know what surprising facts will burst forth from the brains of Fairmont’s bright, curious students.  Hursh is an expert on pangolin lizards, as Edgewood campus second grade teacher Mrs. Kaneski discovered during her reading of What to Do When Something Wants to Eat You.  In this book, author and illustrator Steve Jenkins gets kids engaged in fun discoveries about the animal kingdom, like how puffer fish protect themselves from becoming lunch!  This is an imaginative way to teach children about animal defenses such as mimicry, camouflage and speed.  And the book invites them to consider, “What would you do if something wanted to eat you?”

BOOK REPORT anaheim hills librarian gets us thinking

The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein
Fairmont Reading Level: 2.6
AR Points: 0.5 pts

Shel Silverstein's classic story about a boy and an apple tree has been interpreted in many different ways since it was first published in 1964.  See what you and your kids make of the tale.  Here's a synopsis: The boy comes every day to play under the apple tree's branches, climb her trunk and eat her apples.  The boy loves the tree and she loves him in return.  As the boy grows older, he comes to visit the tree less often and when he does come he always wants something from the tree.  Displaying a never-ending generosity of spirit, the tree always gives whatever she can to the boy she loves without question (sound familiar moms and dads?!).  The simple gift of giving to someone she loves brings her joy.  The boy's visits become less frequent and his demands grow greater. In the end, they find a way to make one another happy unconditionally.

BOOK REPORT mable librarians share favorite reads

When you love books as much as the Mable campus librarians, it’s tough to single out your favorites.  We made them choose, so here are the best of the best reads according to Mrs. Abouabdo and Mrs. Lloyd.

Wayside School Gets a Little Stranger by Louis Sachar
Fairmont Reading Level: 3.3
AR Points: 3

What Mrs. Abouabdo says about this book:
I love to read the Wayside School Series by Louis Sachar.  What could be more fun than a school that’s built vertical – that’s right, the builder put each classroom on top of another!  Wayside School is filled with wacky and wonderful characters.  If you enjoy reading aloud, there are so many different voices you can use to portray the truly strange cast of characters including frogs, skunks, and an orange named Fido.  You will laugh all the way through!

Here Lies the Librarian by Richard Peck
Fairmont Reading Level: 5.1
AR Points: 4

What Mrs. Lloyd says about this book:
SO MANY BOOKS, so little time!  However, when asked to share one of my favorites, I can recommend Here Lies the Librarian.  As with many of the books by Newbery Medal-winning author Richard Peck, it is full of quirky characters, folksy settings and hilarious larger-than-life moments. It is a delicious comedy that is unexpectedly moving.

SHOW & TELL
Assist Program
The Assist Program at the Mable Campus is here to help children who may need additional support with a particular academic skill.  Our goal is to improve the performance level of any student who demonstrates a need for supplemental academic assistance.  Students are identified for the Assist program through teacher referral, test scores, assessments and observations. Children typically attend the Assist Program during the school day at Spanish instruction time. Our Assist teacher, Mrs. Sanders, works both individually and in small groups to reinforce skills taught in the classroom.

Another excellent resource available to all Mable students is FASA.  Mrs. Sanders oversees this after-school program in the computer lab with the help of Ms. Kelbaugh.  FASA is a computer-based learning program designed to help students seeking remediation, grade-level reinforcement or enrichment.  Each child attending FASA is assessed to identify what type of learning experience is needed.  The FASA teachers develop a customized program tailored to the individual student's skill set which may include computer learning, one-on-one tutoring or small group work.  Students typically attend after school two days a week.

Please call Mrs. Sanders at extension 1103 for more information about this exciting opportunity!

Accelerated Math Program
It has been a great start to the school year for the Fairmont Mable Campus students in our Accelerated Math program.  Our students have begun the year exactly where they left off last year.  This allows each student to have an individualized math program where every child is working to accelerate his or her own learning process.  We look forward to our first grade students starting the program after Parent Night.

With excellent teacher support and modified lessons, Accelerated Math has become an extremely important supplementary program to Fairmont's already rigorous math curriculum.  With Math Facts in a Flash, a part of the Accelerated Math program, being used throughout the elementary, the speed and accuracy of our math students have grown through the years. With these two wonderful math programs and Fairmont's exceptional math teachers, there is no limit to the growth of each student.

To learn more about Accelerated Math, be sure to attend the Director's Series "Understanding Accelerated Math" being held on October 7, at 8:30 am and repeating at 6:30 pm, in the Mable Library.
