SHOW & TELL
Blackboard and the Online Classroom
The 2010-2011 academic school year at Fairmont has a newcomer: Blackboard. Blackboard is a learning management system (LMS) which updates students with announcements, homework, interesting facts, and other fun tools. Students are able to respond to discussions posted by the teacher, comment on their peers' thoughts, and extend the fun of the classroom. It serves as a communication/teaching tool between school and home and in the future, projects can be completed with Blackboard. I recently spoke with Ms. Patterson and Ms. Robinette from Fairmont's Education Department to learn more about the new initiative.
Blackboard (Bb) was chosen over other learning management systems by Mr. Alan Rudi, Fairmont's Director of E-Learning. After learning about the website, and realizing its potential, he was sure it was the best fit for Fairmont. The idea of integrating an LMS came from Mr. Rudi and Mr. Chandler, the CEO of Fairmont, who wanted to provide students with a cutting edge learning tool.
Currently, Blackboard is very popular among colleges and universities, but less than ten percent of the K-12 schools in America use an LMS. Fairmont is one of the elite. According to the education department, the benefits for Fairmont are long reaching. Technological integration prepares students for higher education and helps to equip them with necessary skills.
In general, our generation of students is very tech-savvy. They can navigate a webpage, find the answers to our questions, and have access to nearly limitless amounts of information. Recognizing this, the e-learning department sought to fill our needs and speak to us through technology. Blackboard was the way to do this. Blackboard is cutting edge educational technology, and in the K-12 world, Fairmont is setting the standard for innovation.

Character Counts!
Like many children, Mable Campus sixth grader Tara F. cut her hair over the summer. However, she didn't do it to keep cool. Tara donated her hair to Locks of Love. Locks of Love is a non-profit organization that presents hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the United States and Canada, who are under age 21 and suffering from long-term medical hair loss. The mission of Locks of Love is to return a sense of self, confidence and normalcy to these children. When asked why she chose to sacrifice her long tresses, Tara replied, "I know that there are many people out there that suffer from illness that causes them to lose their hair, so I figured that I have an opportunity to help them. I would gladly do it again!"
