FACULTY LOUNGE mable's junior high math teachers take the spotlight

It’s all about math this month at the Mable campus with our faculty spotlight shining on Trevor Ickes and Michelle Paraiso.  These Junior High math teachers make sure Mable’s junior high students are motivated and prepared to challenge any math problem them come up against.  Ms. Paraiso teaches grades seven and eight and is also the junior high math pentathlon coach.  She earned her BA in Mathematics and her MA in Education from Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines.  In addition to teaching math in the Philippines, she taught at Fairmont Prep for six years before joining the Mable team two years ago.  She enjoys reading and listening to music in her time away from school.   

Michelle's cohort in the Math Department, Mr. Ickes has been teaching for the past seven years, six of those years were spent teaching sixth graders.  He teaches junior high and also serves as NJHS Coordinator and pentathlon coach.  Mr. Ickes earned his BA from Loyola Marymount University and attended National University for his credential courses.  He enjoys coaching soccer, playing golf and boating in his free time.  Both Michelle and Trevor credit the supportive environment at Mable and the motivated students with creating a great teaching environment.   

“I enjoy the constant interaction of teachers and students and the ability to engage students that are prepared to take their education to the next level,” says, Mr. Ickes.  Ms. Paraiso loves getting to know her students by attending social events and working with them outside of class time.

FACULTY LOUNGE edgewood features june huang

They say education is more a calling than a profession--and the calling came for Mrs. June Huang while she was working at a school in London, England as part of a college internship. June teaches Junior High Language Arts and is one of the Academic Pentathlon coaches at the Edgewood campus. She came to Fairmont in 2006 as a long-term substitute at the Prep campus.  In fall of the same year, she began working full-time at the Edgewood campus as the 6th grade Language Arts and Assist teacher. She currently teaches 6th and 7th grade literature and 8th grade English. In addition to an English single-subject teaching credential, June has a BA in English and a Master’s Degree in Education with an emphasis in Curriculum and Instruction.  Her hobbies include reading, decorating her home, shopping, exercising, trying new restaurants, traveling, and spending quality time with her husband and 4-month old son. She loves Edgewood’s diverse, well-rounded student body, supportive staff and friendly environment.

SCHOOL NEWS week of the young child highlights

Fairmont celebrated The Week of the Young Child April 10-16 with special projects and activities to highlight the 2011 national theme: Early Years are Learning Years. The Week of the Young Child, now in its 40th year, is sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) with the purpose of drawing public attention to the needs of young children and their families and to recognize the early childhood programs and services that meet those needs.
 

Fairmont's Anaheim Hills, Citron, Edgewood and Mable campuses all celebrated their youngest learners with an array of events and activities including a balloon release at the Anaheim Hills campus, an International Food and Fashion Fair at Citron, a carnival at Edgewood, and special "buddy" reader visits at Mable.

Pentathlon Awards

The Academic Pentathlon, sponsored by the Orange County Department of Education, held its annual award ceremony on the evening of April 12th at the Heritage Forum in Anaheim. Fairmont was represented by the Mable, Edgewood, and Anaheim Hills campuses in a night that turned out to be very exciting for our students. Mable had two teams in seventh and two teams in eighth grade. All four of our teams did extremely well, garnering awards in several categories across the board. Among the awards earned this year were:

In a wonderful display of academic prowess, both eighth grade teams tied for first place in the Science Super Quiz. Overall, all of our junior high students performed admirably, both individually and on their teams. We are very proud of these students, and we thank them, their families, and their Pentathlon coaches for another year of hard work and dedication.

Science Fair Update

After the very successful Science Fair last February, twenty students were invited to present their projects at the Orange County Science Fair on April 6. The eleven students below won awards on that day, and six of them will be moving forward to the California State Science fair to be held at USC on May 2nd and 3rd. Four of those students were also Broadcom Master Award winners. Mr. Briner, our science teacher, accompanied our students to the event, and we could all see the high caliber of the projects presented by schools from all over Orange County. Students were judged multiple times within their allotted time, and they had to effectively present and answer demanding questions from the judges. This was an outstanding year for the Mable students at the Fair, and we congratulate all of the participants and winners for their impressive performance.

Week of the Young Child

Week of the Young Child has been tons of fun and we would like to thank everyone for participating. The week has been a busy one but it was great seeing all the happy faces as students had the chance to wear free dress, come in their multicultural attire, and wear their pajamas. The week ended with a lovely spring celebration and a hunt for Easter eggs.

4th Grade Spelling Bee

On Thursday, April 7th, sixteen excited fourth graders participated in their annual Spelling Bee.  Mrs. Krulisky was very impressed by their abilities and she almost ran out of words from the original list to give them!  Miss del Carmen and Mrs. Howe are very proud of the students and their hard work.  In the end, 3rd place went to Candy Pomprasert, 2nd place to Anushka Shah, and 1st place to Anton Ni.  The winning word was "anchor."  Congratulations to all that participated!

Edgewood Parking Lot Safety Reminders

Parking lot: 

1) Parents need to enter the churchparking lot from Vanderlip ONLY. We want to have one way traffic in that parking lot. If parents ask another person (grandparent, friend etc) to pick/drop off their child, they need to inform that person of the procedure.

2) Parents need to slow down in all the parking lots. Please no speeding.

3) No parking on the red curb.

4) No running in the parking lots.

5) Children need to stay by their parents' side in the parking lot at all times.

The Golden Ticket

Deniz was the student randomly selected to share a meal with Mrs. Kaneski on Friday April 8, 2011.  Deniz's name was selected from a tub of yellow tickets each with names of students who have shown exceptional character during the last week.  If you know Deniz, then you know what a blessing she is to her teacher and to those around her. Deniz never puts herself first, but considers the feelings of others before her own.  Thank you, Deniz for sharing breakfast with me. I loved our time together.

3rd Grade to Irvine Outdoor Education Center

Last Friday, third grade embarked on a brand new field trip to Irvine Regional Outdoor Education Center.  This was actually our second attempt since the first scheduled field trip was postponed due to weather.  Students were giddy with anticipation as we board the bus Friday morning.  When we arrived students began the field trip with a gorgeous nature hike where science and social studies came together as they explored the adaptations of native plants and animals and their interdependence and their interaction with non-native species. While on the hike students also learned about the interactions of plant and animal species with Native Americans and early European settlers. Nutrient and water cycles came to life through hands-on activities at our solar, wind, and hand-powered well.  They also got investigate the ranch's citrus grove where more than 30 different species of citrus plants are grown and tended too.  The third graders were ecstatic when they learned that they could actually pick and eat some of the oranges and lemons.  The field trip wouldn't be complete without a hard hat, hammering, and shoveling in the ranches rock mine.   This was a field trip they would never forget and we'll definitely keep for next year. 

1st Grade Presentation

Mrs. Brown's class took part in a wonderful Persian New Year celebration presented by Mrs. Khashayar.  Mrs. Khashayar taught us about this beautiful celebration and brought in a beautiful display of symbols that their family uses to honor this Persian tradition.  We learned how intertwined the celebration is with nature and the beginning of wonderful things to come in the new year.  Thank you for your hard work and amazing presentation!

Yesterday our DSL soccer team went on to beat Camelot 6-1. Our team played very well both on offense and defense. This was the first game that Fairmont has allowed a goal to be scored on. Great team effort and team play! We are currently 4-0 in league play.
