Anaheim Hills DSL Girls Basketball vs McDowell Sea Lions
February 8, 2011

Final Score: Cougars WIN 21-6

The DSL Lady Cougars came to play on Tuesday for their final home game, and ousted the McDowell Sea Lions 21-6.  The basketball team was on fire with their shooting and defending and controlled the tempo of the game.  Aubrey S. started the game with her fierce determination.  Keely D. and Samantha N. were forces to be reckoned with when they reached the Lady Cougars' half of the court.  Jessica C. and Victoria P. were offensively geared and helped the Lady Cougars dominate in front of their home crowd!

SHOW & TELL
Fifth Grade "Walk Through the American Revolution"
Yesterday the 5th grade students had the opportunity to participate in an interactive presentation of the American Revolution. Our presenter guided us through the many important historical events surrounding this poignant part of our nation's history.  The students were assigned different historical figures to portray and many of them dressed up as their assigned character and were truly able to understand the critical decisions that took place during the founding of our nation.  All of the students were divided into teams and engaged in a friendly competition to earn the most points for their team. Our "Walk Through the American Revolution" was a wonderful way to study and learn about our history all while having a great time!!

Junior High Science Lab 'Physics'! Speed and how is it measured?
Junior High students learned how to calculate speed with variables of weight and slope.  They worked as a group to design experiments with downhill speed using a car and ramp.  In each experiment they needed to hypothesize how each variable would affect the speed of the car on the ramp.  They recorded their hypothesis, procedure, measurements, and conclusions; and then the experimental variable, distance, time and calculated speed.  This lesson really helps students visualize the lessons they have been taught in the lecture section of the science classes.

SHOW & TELL
Operation Science in 5th Grade
To enhance the fifth grade's study of the human body, Dr. Elise Luna (a.k.a. Xochitl's mom) generously visited Mrs. White's class and allowed the students to experience what it is like to be a doctor. Dr. Luna is an ob/gyn who trains other doctors to perform minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery. "Dr. Luna was funny and interesting and she answered all of our questions," gushed Alyssa C. After an introduction, the students suited up and took turns training to do laparoscopic surgery. According to Alex J., "It was so cool! It was just like playing video games." Thanks to this incredible experience, many of the students are now considering a career in medicine.

Mr. Bones Speaks to Kinder and First Grade
Mrs.  Bledsoe and Dr.  Aminian, who work at CHOC hospital, gave a splendid presentation to the kindergarten and first grade classes about  Childhood Safety.  The students were given safety rules for when they ride a scooter, go on the monkey bars, and jump on a trampoline, to name a few.  The students were shown what bones are most often broken on a skeletal model (many named him Mr. Bones) and ways to prevent these injuries.  Thank you Mrs. Bledsoe and Dr. Aminian for your time and efforts to speak to our young ones!

SHOW & TELL

Under the Sea
Our students had such a great opportunity this past Tuesday when the Aquarium of the Pacific visited our school. We were first introduced to the animals through a slide show that taught the students about sea life and the many shape liked friends we could find, like squares (sting rays), circles (sea anemones), and triangles (shark fins). The excitement came when they had the chance to walk inside the aquarium truck and touch the baby sharks, squishy sea cucumber, and sea anemone that felt like sticky spaghetti. The students learned that all animals should be respected and some, like sharks, should be left alone. Thanks to our hard working parent board and the fundraisers that are set by them, we were able to give the students an experience they will never forget. Who knows, we might have a future marine biologists among us.

Character Counts–Think of a heart
Can anyone guess what pillar represents February? It’s CARING!
Caring is represented by the color red on our Character Counts wall and we continue to recognize the children’s efforts in the area of Fairness, Respect, and trustworthiness.
CARING means to be kind • be compassionate and show you care • express gratitude • forgive others • help people in need. Together with the help of our campus mascot “Hero”, the students will gain an understanding of the importance of good character.

SHOW & TELL
Fairmont Students Are Math Thinkers!
On Saturday, January 29, 2011, many of Mable's 4th & 5th graders participated in the annual Math Matters Competition.  Around 100 students from all over Orange County were present.  Fairmont students were accompanied by parents and teachers, and launched themselves into the world of problem solving.  As they awaited the results, the presenters led them through a series of thought provoking tasks.  There was a 3 place tie and all in the tiebreaker were Fairmont students!

When the final results were announced, Fairmont, once again, brought home top honors.  Because there were more participants this year, the top 20 were recognized.  All those participating received certificates of recognition. Winners received gift bags containing art pens and various other goodies.  The top 3 winners were awarded special items.  3rd place winner, Adnan I., won an I Pod.  The top prize, a Wii, was awarded to 4th grader, Brianna D..  Their teachers, Mrs. Schoening, Mr. Edmisten, and Ms. Gormin, also received Amazon gift certificates for their classes.
