FRIDAY FOLDER mable campus january 7

SHOW & TELL
Giving Service
On December 16, the Mable Campus Orchestra performed for the residents of the Villa Valencia retirement community in Laguna Hills.  After concluding their music pieces, students greeted the guests, shook their hands, and spoke with them individually.  Highlights of the day included one woman, with tears in her eyes, who told Mrs. Stella that she was a former music teacher and that she loved watching our kids play.  The former teacher still plays her flute and looked forward to performing in a holiday concert the following day.  Another woman said "Anyone who missed this concert missed something GREAT."  She then asked if the group had a "record" she could buy.

Everyone in the orchestra was touched that the performance meant so much to their audience.  It was evident that the senior residents were remembering earlier times as they listened. The experience truly filled the students with the holiday spirit-so much so that everyone on the bus sang holiday songs all the way back to school. Mrs. Stella was so proud of the performers who displayed such poise and maturity.

On Wednesday, January 5, Mable junior high students volunteered their time at the Community Action Partnership of Orange County warehouse, Orange County's food bank, to help pack boxes for seniors in Orange County.  Helpers at the center first gave the students an overview of the program, then the students were split into groups.  Each group was designated a job.  Every box that the students assembled goes to an Orange County senior citizen in need, and it contains items such as canned food, dry milk, rice, fruit juices, cereal, and other items. Students filled the boxes in a precise arrangement along conveyors.  The sealed boxes, weighing about 20 lbs., were stacked in pallets of 40, then forklifted to the warehouse transportation area for delivery.  In a record-setting performance, our junior high students packed over 2,300 boxes!  Mable students did a great job, which was praised by the CAPOC staff.  Junior high students must fulfill 24 hours of community service to graduate.  Hours volunteering at the center counted toward their community service requirement.

The Mable Campus is also very proud of alumni Mark A., Surbhi B., Christopher T. and Megan R. who are spending their Preparatory Academy Travel Week in New Orleans rebuilding a school ravaged by Hurricane Katrina.  The Mable Campus is very honored to see the maturity and spirit of service that our students display each and every day.

2nd Grade Study Trip: The Elves and the Shoemaker
Our second grade students had the opportunity to see "The Elves and the Shoemaker" last Thursday.  We enjoyed watching live theater and seeing all the characters come to life. The actors were awesome!  The play reminded us about the importance of giving and helping others.   After the play, the second graders enjoyed a picnic lunch at a nearby park and some fun playtime with friends.

Hello! I have been a teacher for over 30 years. I think I was just born to be a teacher. Since I love it so much, it must be a gift!  I live in Mockingbird Canyon with my husband and son. My mom, who is in failing health also lives with us.  Logan is nearly 14 and excels in school and in sports.  He wants to play football next year for his freshman year in high school.  I love to scrapbook, travel, and shop in my spare time (ha ha) and my husband and I have decided that when we retire we will be moving to Orcas Island. This island is just off the coast of WA state in the San Juan Islands and it is breathtaking. And, since there is a private school right on the island, retirement may be purely in theory only.   I am grateful for all the amazing minutes 2011 will give me. All 525,600 of them.

SNACK TIME making fruits and veggies fun

Edgewood’s pre-K – K students participated in a nutrition education activity presentation using the book Eating The Alphabet by Lois Ehlert, and samples of fruits and vegetables. The children participated with great enthusiasm in guessing the name of a fruit or a vegetable that began with the letter A, B, C, etc.

Can you guess? A = (apples, apricots, and avocado) Wow! The students had recently visited an apple farm and knew the names of all the apples shown to them, “Granny Smith” one student sang out! “Red Delicious” another enthusiastic student said loudly with hand waving enthusiastically. It was very impressive. The children were well educated on the various types of apples and whether they tasted, sweet or tart. A few children said they preferred the tart-tasting apples! But most liked them sweet. They liked applesauce too.

However, eating artichokes were not popular with the students. That’s OK, there are lots of other vegetables to choose from.

A few students mentioned they like to make guacamole from avocado. That’s one more way to get your fruit and vegetable servings in!

B was for banana, blueberries and yes, even broccoli. The children also said that they LIKE broccoli. Raw or cooked. That’s awesome! B was also for Brussels sprouts. That was not a popular vegetable with most.

C was for carrots, cabbage, cranberries, cherries, celery and corn. Naming fruits and vegetables that began with the letter “C” was easy.
Then, a beautiful, round, colorful purple cabbage was shown to the students. “My Mom eats that!” one student shared. He, however, was not a fan of cabbage.

D was for Dates (that was a hard one).

Can you guess what vegetable begins with the letter “E”? Hint: it’s a type of lettuce.

Students in the older classes continued further along the alphabet. The presentation concluded with the song, “Five a Day” emphasizing eating at least five servings of fruits and vegetables every day. There was lots of singing and even dancing to the music. We all had fun, and I look forward to presenting again at Fairmont!

Enjoy eating your alphabet!

FACULTY LOUNGE edgewood teacher strikes a chord

Junior High English teacher Ms. Denise Miller was born and raised in Portland, Oregon.   She was involved in many different clubs and organizations growing up, including soccer, basketball, Girl Scouts, and band.  Not only was she a part of her high school marching band, but for three summers in high school she was part of a band from the Northwest called Northern Lights. She has visited most states in the country as a result and has participated in the Portland Rose Parade, Starlight Parade, Junior Rose Parade, and Disney Magic Music Days at Disneyland.

Ms. Miller earned her BA in English from the University of Oregon where she was part of the Oregon Marching Band, Symphonic Band, and Concert Band. While at UO, she participated in many activities, including the Holiday Bowl and Parade, Fiesta Bowl and Parade, the Sun Bowl, and the Seattle Bowl. After graduation, she enrolled in Pacific University’s Masters in Teaching program, graduating in December 2004 and spent the next six months in on-the-job training as a substitute teacher in Eugene and Springfield.

The summer of 2005, she relocated to California where her brother was living. Her first job here was in Riverside County at a school called Harvest Valley Elementary. She taught junior high English and computers there. In 2006, she began here at Fairmont teaching computers K-8. In 2007, she added junior high English to her responsibilities.

On weekends and holidays, Ms. Miller enjoys watching college football and basketball games, visiting Disneyland with friends and family, and watching movies. She enjoys reading and watching most genres, but science fiction is her favorite. Ms. Miller still visits her family in Oregon and Washington once or twice a year, but she also loves to travel to other states.  Her next goal is to visit either Florida or Hawaii.
