Eighth Grade Visits Orange County Courthouse
The 8th graders visited the North Justice Center in Fullerton and witnessed first-hand the administration of justice. They observed actual court proceedings, visited the jury assembly room, glimpsed the inmates' intake and holding areas, met representatives of the District Attorney's office and the Sherriff's Department. Our eighth graders then participated in a scripted mock trial with the objective of teaching the students the role of various participants in a courtroom setting (judge, attorney, witness, baliff, clerk, etc). They then met with a judicial officer to talk to the students about the legal consequences of one's actions.

Spring portraits will be taken of ALL students. Please dress your child in the clothes you would like them to wear for this spring photograph! In a few weeks Lifetouch will be sending a package of the pictures home with your child, and you may purchase the entire package or 1-4 sheets of the pictures, and then RETURN the pictures you are not interested in purchasing.

Third Grade Musical Showcase
Our Third Graders can also recognize famous masterworks by great composers. They also improvised dance movements that reflected a specific pattern by Beethoven. For the last two weeks they have been choreographing a complicated dance to music by Saint-Saens' work, "Danse Macabre".
On March 31, the Third Graders showed that they are becoming literate musicians. They did the following things in 6/8 meter: play instruments to the beat, use the Gordon Rhythmic System to read and speak rhythms, dictate rhythms, and learned to listen critically to discern one rhythm from many other rhythms.

Devastation in the Land of the Rising Sun
With countless deaths and over ten thousand missing, fear and devastation are streaming through Japan. On March 11, Sendai was hit with a 9.1 earthquake followed by over 300 aftershocks that could be felt by the citizens of Tokyo, nearly 200 miles away.
Minutes after the earthquake, a 30 foot wall of water slammed into the coast causing more damage as it pushed houses from their foundations and swept cars and boats away as if they were toys.
After the flood waters began to recede, the true devastation became clear. A nuclear power plant on the North Coast of Honshu was damaged and is currently overheating. In a last-ditch attempt to cool the radioactive core, sea water was hauled in and poured into the reactor. Teams of employees, including the famous Fukushima 50, the first wave of workers to reenter the plant, has been working tirelessly to restore power and reengage the central cooling system.
The emperor of Japan has released a message to his people saying to not give up hope and to stay strong. As they battle diminishing resources, the people of Japan are forced to salvage what they can. Food and water are scarce, and trucks carrying stock and supplies are often deterred by damaged roads. Amazingly, the people of Japan have maintained their compassion; coupled with every report of devastation is a story of humanitarian understanding and respect.

Piggy Banks for Japan
Two of Mable's fifth grade girls had an idea to help the people of Japan. What if they put piggy banks in each classroom? Would people contribute enough money to fill them? After talking with their mothers, Alyssa Goh and Nathalie Song put together a plan and presented it to Mrs. Calabria.
On Thursday, March 24, banks and fliers were distributed to every classroom on Mable Campus. Posters, made by the girls, went up in the well-traveled areas, like the library. Their goal? To end up with $1 per student. Judging from the enthusiastic response from students and teachers alike, they will have much more to present to the American Red Cross to benefit Japanese relief efforts. Banks will be collected on Thursday March 31. This is citizenship in action, and we are proud to say these girls are a part of our Fairmont Community.

Fun Run Donation Information
This year's Fun Run will take place on Friday, May 20th, 2011.
The Edgewood Campus Parent Association (ECPA) is selling "Fun Run" T-Shirts as an added Fundraiser. The cost of each T-Shirt is $12, and the profit made from the T-Shirt sales will be used to purchase educational materials for the classrooms and to support the Teacher Appreciation efforts of the ECPA.
The steps to participating in the Fun Run Sponsorship are as follows:
1. The winning design (created by an Edgewood student and chosen by a Parent Association committee) will be on the front of the T-shirt.
2. The names of the Fun Run Sponsors (your company/family name) will be listed on the back of the T-shirt. Donation Form is attached.
Once the winning design is chosen by the end of March, the Fun Run T-shirts will be produced and go on sale soon after. This year's Fun Run monies will be made by:
1. Purchasing the Fun Run T-Shirt(s).
2. Donating money through the Family and Corporate Sponsor Donation.*
3. Pledging per lap ran by student.*

Breakfast With Kaylin
Miss Kaylin Ong is chock-full of good character! She and Mrs. Kaneski enjoyed breakfast together on Friday, March 25, 2011. For Kaylin, a sugar donut and orange juice, and for Mrs. Kaneski (and a fine excuse to break her diet plan) enjoyed ½ a glazed donut and coffee. YUM!! Kaylin shared that she loves playing soccer, is working toward straight A+'s, can't think of anything she would change about 2nd grade, and that her BFF is Ashley. Thank you Kaylin for starting my Friday off so nicely!
Wardrobe Reminders
Fairmont Private Schools enforces a wardrobe and appearance code. School is an important place, and we expect students to dress as if they take school seriously. Fairmont students are required to wear True Grits school uniforms which are clean, pressed and in good condition. This past Sunday, the Edgewood debate team took home top awards in the fourth Orange County Debate League tournament of the year, the Saddleback Invitational. Eighteen Edgewood 8th and 7th graders participated in this event, but overall, seven schools, thirty-one teams and ninety-three students were present.

After School Fun
Per popular demand we are adding another class ofCooking and other concoctions to our extracurricular schedule. The class will start Thursday, April 7th from 3:15pm to 4:00pm and run through June 2nd. Enroll your little chef on this hands-on experience before it’s too late! Starting the month of April Nutrition Management has made a change to their substitute entrée. Grilled cheese sandwiches will no longer be available as an option and will be replaced with an American cheese sandwich. Multicultural Day
Multicultural Day is a special opportunity for students to learn about different cultures around the world. We would like to invite all parents to join us on Friday, April 8th for fashion show and potluck.
Fashion Show- children can wear their cultural attire all day or wear free dress. The fashion show will begin at 10:15am. Please complete the portion of the flyer that was sent home to participate. List the description as you would like it announced during the fashion show.
Potluck – 11:30am for preschool & Jr. Kindergarten / 12:10pm for Kindergarten. Students may still order a school lunch or bring a home lunch. Students can only participate in the international potluck if a parent is on campus to accompany them. We encourage parents to share one of their favorite food dishes and participate in our potluck. Food must be able to feed about 10 – 15 people. Please complete the portion of the flyer that was sent home to participate.
