Smith Returns From U.S. Camp
Anaheim HIlls' Dylan S. returned home this week after taking part in the U.S. Soccer Under-14 Boys' National Team's international training session in Guadalajara, Mexico.  The training -held January 16-23-included eight days of training and a series of friendly matches against local youth clubs, including Atlas and Chivas de Guadalajara.

Every player on the roster was born in 1997, and were identified through the yearly player identification camp (held August 2010) and U.S. Soccer Training Centers.  Dylan, an eighth-grade student at Fairmont Private School-is among nine Californians on the team, but is the lone player from Orange County.

Dylan, 14, was invited to train with the Olympic Development Program (ODP) from Southern California in 2008.  He has been training with them ever since, and last year he was invited to try out for the regional team-representing Southern California.  From there, he was invited to train with other regional teams and to try out for the national team.

FRIDAY FOLDER mable campus february 11

SHOW & TELL
Song of the School Bell
Day after day, the winter through,
I guard your sons and daughters true.
Each day at nine I say, "Hello,"
To the youthful world of joy and woe.
Each day at nine are loudly sung,
Clear greetings from my iron tongue,
While children rush with romp and race,
As though to meet my fond embrace.
Then through the hours they ply the mind
To see what knowledge they may find--
Sometimes with smile and radiant eye,
Sometimes with frown and inward sigh.
'Tis now with bright, now downcast, looks
They bend their heads above their books.

Kind neighbors, you and I are friends,
And toiling for the selfsame ends, --
To help the children wiser grow,
And teach them what they ought to know.

-John Edward Everett

From Your Admissions Director
We have a lot to celebrate!  Fairmont Schools soon will enter its 59th year of instruction, and it all started here at the Mable Campus.   The time has come when we ask all current Mable families to let us know their plans for the next school year.  By now, all current families should have received their registration packets for the upcoming year.

Every Mable student who re-enrolls for the 2011-2012 school year will join in the celebration by ringing the old school bell. In addition, his or her name will be entered into a raffle for a chance to be "Director for a Day" and their parents will be entered to win a premium parking space for a month.    During flag salute on Wednesday, March 2, three students' names will chosen for  "Director for a Day" --one for a child in grades 1-3, one in grades 4-6, and one in grades 7-8. During the Parent Association Meeting on March 10, the names of nine children will be drawn for their parents to receive a parking space, one per month for the months of September 2011 through May 2012.

As a current family, we encourage you to take advantage of our priority registration period.  Much of our planning for the upcoming school year takes place in spring.  Timely re-enrollment allows us the opportunity to plan and facilitate the best educational experience possible for our students. As you know, space is limited in several grade levels.  Returning your re-enrollment contract by the deadline of Friday, February 25, will secure your child's place for next year.

If you have a family that you would like us to consider for enrollment, please stop by the admissions office for a new student packet.  First acceptances for 2011-2012 applicants will be mailed to students on our wait list during the first week of March.

We understand that you have many options when choosing a school, and we thank you for your continued trust in allowing us to educate your child.

FRIDAY FOLDER citron campus february 11

SHOW & TELL

Healthy Teeth
How many times should we brush our teeth? What are healthy foods and what are bad foods? You can ask any Citron student and they can now answer those questions thanks to Dr. Okawachi. The children were able to participate by using “real dentist instruments” in a simulated visit to the dentist which was the highlight of the event; the presentation was topped off with an animated film about Dudley the Dinosaur.

Message from Mrs. Douglas
When we think of the month of February we typically think “LOVE”. It is when we celebrate Valentine’s Day, exchange cards, give roses and candy and express our love for the special people in our lives. The relationship between a teacher and her students is a special kind of love. Teachers do what they do every day FOR THE LOVE OF IT.  They respect and love the uniqueness of each individual child and the rewards come back many fold. Children feel the love of a teacher in many different ways. They know that if you make a mistake, you are still loved. They know there is always someone to love them through their struggles. They understand it’s okay to have angry feelings. It does not make the love go away. Kindness, patience and tolerance are expressions of love. A teacher that inspires the desire to learn is giving a gift of love – love for nature, people of the world, fine art, books and reading. To encourage an adventurous spirit is to love a child enough so they believe in their own ability to chase any dream they have. Thanks to all the teachers who are drawn to the service of others and who posses the qualities that enable them to turn their love into action.

100 Days!
The campus was buzzing with activity as students counted cherrios, stickers, pennies, and other treasures on Friday as they celebrated the 100th day in school. They counted by 1’s, 5’s, and 10’s till each student counted 100 different items.

FRIDAY FOLDER edgewood campus february 11

SHOW & TELL

Debate Results
On Saturday, the Orange County Debate League hosted its second annual Winter Classic debate tournament right here at Edgewood, and I'm pleased to announce that the Eagles took home first place tournament award!  The tournament award goes to the school with the highest win percentage.

This was a very important event for us because it marked the first time in our four years of competitive debating that we've hosted here;  It was nice to earn first place at home.  The campus looked great, and it was a wonderful setting for a tournament.  Seven schools were present, representing thirty teams and nearly ninety students!  Check out the OCDL website for complete results.

As you all know, I head the debate program here at Fairmont, but two other people do most of the work that goes into each OCDL tournament.  Miss Frasier is the assistant coach for the Edgewood team, and she also serves as the Director of Operations for the OCDL.  Miss Miller supports the team as well, and she serves as the web administrator for the league.  The Orange County Debate League wouldn't be possible without the tireless efforts of these two dedicated individuals.

Please see below for individual Edgewood scores and be sure to congratulate our debate team for their first place victory.  We hope to see you all next month (Sunday, March 27th) at our last regular tournament of the year at Serra Catholic School in Rancho Santa Margarita!

After School Supervision Improvements
Dear Edgewood Parents/Guardians,

A few months ago we asked our teachers to contact you to see how the school year is going. Thank you for the feedback that you gave to the teachers. It has provided us with valuable information that is being used to refine what we do here at the Edgewood campus.

A number of parents mentioned safety during the after-school extended day program as an area of concern. There are a large number of students out on the yard each day between 2:30 and 3:45 p.m. Our staff supervises each area of the yard during this time, but the sheer volume of students makes effective supervision a challenge.

In order to address this situation, we will implement some changes to the after-school program beginning Wednesday, February 16th. We believe that these changes will provide a more positive environment for our students.  Our teachers and extended day staff will be involved in putting the new guidelines into action.

We understand that change can sometimes be confusing, and so we will have a "help" table set-up outside of the main office. A staff member will be there to answer your questions and to help you determine where your child may be picked up. Car loading procedures are NOT affected by these changes. The new guidelines apply to the students who are on the yard but will not affect  the students who report to car loading immediately after school.

I thank you in advance for your support of the changes and trust that by working together we can make Edgewood an even better place for all children.

Regards,

Doyle Smiens
Director of the Edgewood Campus

Final Score: Cougars WIN 21-6

The DSL Lady Cougars came to play on Tuesday for their final home game, and ousted the McDowell Sea Lions 21-6.  The basketball team was on fire with their shooting and defending and controlled the tempo of the game.  Aubrey S. started the game with her fierce determination.  Keely D. and Samantha N. were forces to be reckoned with when they reached the Lady Cougars' half of the court.  Jessica C. and Victoria P. were offensively geared and helped the Lady Cougars dominate in front of their home crowd!
