CHALK TALK why it’s cool being on a middle school debate team

North Tustin Debate Team with Debate Coach Ben Hughes
at the OC Debate League Championship, May 2014

Strong friendships, refined public speaking, exceptional problem-solving and effective research strategies are a few of the many benefits, which result from participating in competitive middle school debate teams. As members of a debate team, students can pursue excellent opportunities to sharpen a host of life skills that extend well beyond high school and college.

Fairmont has a proven track record of helping students harness these distinctive qualities and achieve significant accomplishments. Last year, Fairmont students finished among the top 32 debate teams in the nation and achieved notable success in major Orange County Debate League Competitions.

Students with polished debate-related skills are destined to stand above the crowd. Mastering disciplines such as research/analysis of data, the articulation of theories and the persuasion of complex subjects give students a firm foundation of confidence to take on the world. These skills are valuable for obtaining scholarships, entering a highly respected college, and later on, fulfilling career advancement goals.

Along with these highly respected attributes, students also enjoy making new friends, traveling to debate tournaments and building a lifetime of good memories. Participating on a Fairmont Debate Team offers many rewarding experiences. For more information, please contact Middle School Debate Coach Ben Hughes (Fairmont North Tustin Campus) at bhughes@fairmontschools.com.

SHORT STORY writing workshop

On Tuesday, June 5, author/illustrator Troy Howell visited Fairmont's Anaheim Hills campus for a series of events to celebrate the grand opening of the new library including this writing workshop with Mr. Bloomingdale's fifth graders. Students collaborated on a story about an orphaned narwhal named "Lahwrah" (narwhal in reverse) dealing with an identity crisis. Best seller material?  Maybe!

SCHOOL NEWS the teaching channel film shoot at fairmont

On July 13, 2011, Wingspan Pictures, the production company working with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to create programming for The Teaching Channel, visited Fairmont to film two teachers.  The footage from Fairmont is slated to appear on The Teaching Channel website, You Tube and Facebook pages, and could be included in a television episode on the PBS program “Great Lesson Ideas” this fall.

Wingspan began by filming two Kindergarten lessons at the Fairmont Anaheim Hills Campus taught by Heather Lopez. The first lesson incorporated an interactive white board to teach students about ordinal numbers in an engaging, dynamic way. The second lesson focused on identifying and understanding consonant-vowel-consonant words through sounding out and then acting out the words as a group. Mrs. Lopez led the students in jogging in place and mopping the floor while the camera crews captured the learning process in action.

Transitioning from Kindergarten to high school, the production company then traveled to Fairmont Preparatory Academy to film math teacher Mark Hassoun teach “The Fundamentals of Triangles and Quadrilaterals” to his summer school geometry class, which is taught in a hybrid online/in-class format. Wingspan cameras captured close-ups of the students using cut-out triangles to represent the angles of a quadrilateral and then followed as Hassoun’s impeccable handwriting filled the white board to visually explain the lesson.

“Being neat and organized in your lecture and using colors to make the white board notes visually appealing are two ways to ensure the success of this lesson, and any geometry lesson,” Hassoun explained to the Wingspan Director during his follow-up interview. He and Lopez had the opportunity to share their teaching tips and tricks along with the story behind their passion for teaching in their individual interviews filmed after the lessons.

Fairmont Private Schools and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation share a dedication to supporting innovations in learning. Through this participation with The Teaching Channel, Fairmont hopes to demonstrate that belief in innovation by showcasing integrated technology in the classroom, and to support the channel’s founding principle that “inspired teaching, like any great art, should be seen.”

SCHOOL NEWS whooping cough vaccination now req'd for 7th-12th grades

This is just a reminder that a new school immunization law requires all students entering 7th through 12th grades in the 2011-2012 school year in California to be immunized with a pertussis (whooping cough) vaccine booster called Tdap.

Fairmont 7th-12th grade students will not be able to start school this fall without proof of vaccination. Please schedule your vaccination today:

As stated by the CA State Government-affiliated organization, Shots for School: Pertussis is a very contagious respiratory disease that can be severe and last for months. The immunity received from either early childhood immunization or pertussis disease wears off over time, leaving older students and adults susceptible again to pertussis. Immunization with Tdap can protect students, schools and communities against pertussis.

The new requirement affects all students – current, new, and transfers – in public and private schools. The law has two phases:
  • For the 2011-2012 school year, all students entering into 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th or 12th grades will need proof of a Tdap shot before starting school.
  • For 2012-2013 and future school years, all students entering into 7th grade will need proof of a Tdap shot before starting school.

SCHOOL NEWS bill and melinda gates foundation plans to film fairmont teachers

The fact that Fairmont Private Schools has some of the best teachers around is something we've known for years.  We've also been proud to share our innovative approach to technology; blending online and in-class learning experiences to reach out to 21st century learners.  Now, the cat is out of the bag in a big way!  This June, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, working on behalf of The Teaching Channel, requested to film some of our K-2nd and high school teachers in action. The Teaching Channel is a video showcase -- on the Internet and TV -- of inspiring and effective teaching practices in America's schools.

On July 13, Wingspan Pictures, the production company working with the Foundation, will be visiting the Anaheim Hills campus to film Heather Lopez teaching an interactive Kindergarten lesson using an interactive whiteboard.  In the afternoon, they will head over to Fairmont Preparatory Academy to film Mark Hassoun teaching "The Fundamentals of Triangles" to his summer geometry class using Fairmont's hybrid online/in-class format.  Both Heather and Mark were required to meet certain qualifications set by the Foundation and had to submit detailed lesson plans for approval.  Special thanks to them for their willingness to jump on board with this project!

Fairmont's footage will eventually appear on the Teaching Channel website, You Tube and Facebook pages and could be included in a television episode on the program "Great Lesson Ideas" this fall. Fairmont is incredibly proud of our amazing teachers and honored to have the opportunity to share what they do so well!

 PHOTOS OF THE WEEK
Preschool Commencement
There was not a dry eye in the house as our 4 year olds "graduated" to Kindergarten!  It was a wonderful ceremony with all the caps and gowns, and smiles from moms, dads, grandparents and lots of friends to cheer them on to this first of many milestones. After listening to eighth grader, Rebecca Choi (who is graduating to high school next week!) sing a mix of "You Are My Sunshine", our little 'Cougars' crossed the stage to shake hands and receive their diploma.  They then moved their tassle from the left side to the right side to officially be Kindergarteners!

Kindergarten Father's Day Luncheon
The Kindergarteners celebrated Father's Day with an enjoyable picnic lunch.  The kinder-tots sang a song to their dads and then they all sat under the trees and ate the picnic lunch that dad had brought....lots of great memories!

Fifth Grade and Junior High Instrumental Program
The Fifth Graders and Junior High performed for all of us on Wednesday and it was wonderful to see the progress our students have made on the flute, clarinet, cello, trombone, saxaphone and trumpets!  The Junior High now has a jazz band and they played "Fireworks" by Katy Perry and everyone in the audience loved the song and seeing how incredibly talented their friends are!

Junior High Spirit Day!
All the Junior High celebrated the final 'Spirit Day' of the year with a jock/nerd day.  They had so much fun creating their alter-egos!  There were lots of big black glasses and suspenders.  Thank you, Mrs. Morley for being a cheerleader at Brea for so long that Madison, Shelby, Allys and Georgia could all match!
Congratulations to Kyle Cartwright!
Kyle CartwrightKyle Cartwright was one of 15 seventh and eighth graders from Anaheim Hills to compete at the Orange County Science and Engineering Fair in April.  Kyle's project "Stop! Watch out for Children Cursing" won first place in the Social Sciences category at the county competition.  Kyle surveyed over 200 students to investigate the cause  of cursing among children.  His first place win qualified him to compete at the California State Science Fair in May and also garnered him a nomination to the Broadcom MASTERS™ competition.  Nominees are eligible to register and complete an on-line application to compete in this new national middle school science competition.  Good luck Kyle!

Fourth Grade Visits Sacramento and San Francisco
Anaheim Hill's 4th grade students and parents just recently returned from their very first overnight school field trip.  This was an exciting field trip, which helped to reinforce our Social Studies curriculum.

Sacramento, as well as the city of Coloma, provided our students will many learning opportunities.  While in Sacramento we visited the Capitol Building, and we even met with a former Fairmont student who works4th Grade to Sacramento for Senator Huff.  In the historical city of Coloma, our students and parents had an opportunity to pan for gold along the American River.  This allowed them to experience how difficult and tiresome this task was for the 49ers.  We also had free time to explore Old Sacramento with its OId West appearance: cobblestone streets and wooden sidewalks.  Our last activity in Sacramento included a visit to the Railroad Museum which helped our students to better understand Theodore Judah and the Big Four's involvement in the building of the Transcontinental Railroad.

The second day of the trip was spent in scenic San Francisco. Our day began with a walk across the Golden Gate Bridge and a bus tour of Chinatown.  Afterwards, we explored the California Academy of Sciences Museum which includes a three-level rainforest, an aquarium, and many other interesting exhibits.  We concluded our day with a visit to Alcatraz Island and its infamous prison. As you can see, this field trip provided our 4th grade students with a unique opportunity to explore some of California's historical landmarks.

8th Grade D.C. Trip
For 8 long months, we had anticipated the 8th grade trip to Washington D.C. and New York City. Finally, May 8th arrived!  We met at LAX to begin what would be a fantastic week of sightseeing, bonding and just plain fun. Every day was action packed as we toured the Capitol and actually got to see the House of Representatives in action, the Smithsonians, the Newseum, Ford's Theater, Arlington National Cemetery, the Holocaust Museum, the National Cathedral, and Mount Vernon.

While waiting to enter the Newseum, we actually saw President Obama and his motorcade pass by! Evenings were for strolling around the various monuments and memorials such as the Lincoln Memorial, the Korean Memorial, the Vietnam Memorial, the World War II memorial, the Washington Monument, and the Jefferson Memorial.  One evening was special, as we visited the Kennedy Center Performance of "Shear Madness."  It was hilariously funny and had everyone in stitches.

On Thursday, we headed out for New York City.  We went up to the top of the Empire State Building and took a boat ride around the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.  After a little time in Time Square and dinner, we headed back for D.C.

By the time we arrived back to LAX on Friday night, everyone was exhausted and happy about being home.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT anaheim hills features musician allison to

How many kids can say they've played at Carnegie Hall?  Not many.  However, Fairmont’s Anaheim Hills campus is home to one such talented student.  Fourth grader, Allison To, is an accomplished pianist and skilled violinist. Allison has won multiple awards in numerous competitions such as: SYMF (Southwestern Youth Music Festival), MTAC (Music Teachers' Association of California), and the Long Beach Mozart Festival. She was awarded a Gold Medal at the 2010 International Young Musician's Competition. In the same year, Allison gave her debut performance at Carnegie Hall in New York.  She currently studies piano under the direction of Ariel Yang at Opus119, the school of music's prestigious Conservatory Program.  She shares her musical talents with others by performing in local senior centers and giving concerts to fund-raise for World Vision.  Her favorite subject is math and she also enjoys shopping, drawing, and playing with her best friend Suma, her Maltese dog. Allison remembers a time her mom took her to a concert given by a Korean doctor. He is not only a famous surgeon, but a musician and believes that music is very therapeutic.  This has inspired Allison to pursue a career as a doctor and use both her academic skills and her musical talents to make a difference in the lives of others.

SNACK TIME may is egg-cellent

It’s time to celebrate a versatile food, found around the globe and eaten in a variety of ways for centuries, the egg. Eggs are well-liked in the US, and if you count all the eggs eaten for breakfast and used in cakes and other cooked foods, we eat about 250 eggs per person per year!

Why are eggs so popular? Well, for starters they help give foods a richer flavor, color and texture. Eggs are high in complete protein and easy to digest. All of the protein in eggs can be found in the egg white, or “albumen”.  The albumin also contains B vitamins, which play a role in energy metabolism.

Egg yolk contains the fat soluble vitamins A and D, fat, and most of the minerals, such as iron, calcium, phosphorus and potassium. The yolk is also rich in choline, an important nutrient for development of the brain.

Lutein, a yellowish phytonutrient previously discussed on these blogs, is also found in egg yolk, and has the ability to protect the eye from damaging ultraviolet light. Corn and other yellow vegetables contain lutein, but the form of lutein found in egg yolk is much more bioavailable, meaning it is easily absorbed and used by the body.

While chicken eggs are most popular in the US, duck, goose, ostrich, emu and quail eggs can also be found mainly in specialty shops, restaurant menus, or local farms. Have you ever eaten a quail or ostrich egg?

Big egg: An ostrich or emu egg, is twenty times as large as a chicken egg. The ivory-colored shell is very thick and hard to crack open.  A single emu egg is equal to about 10 -15 hen’s eggs.

Quail eggs are pretty small (five quail eggs equal to one large chicken egg) with speckled spots on the shell.

Fun facts about eggs:
White eggs come from white hens
Brown eggs come from brown-feathered hens
The egg carton was created in 1918 to prevent eggs from breaking
The egg yolk color depends on the bird’s diet and can range from pale yellow to dark orange.
If you want to hard-boil an ostrich egg, it will take about 1 hour

Free-range eggs are produced by hens that go outdoors daily where they can peck for worms, grubs and insects, and exercise their legs and wings.

Can’t remember if an egg is fresh or hard boiled? Just spin the egg. If it wobbles, it’s raw. If it spins easily, it’s hard boiled. A fresh egg will sink in water, a stale one will float.

BOOK REPORT anaheim hills suggests inspirational american story

The Land
by Mildred Taylor

Every year, my students enjoy reading The Land, by Mildred Taylor.  Set in the South after the Emancipation Proclamation, it tells the story of Paul Edward Logan, the son of a wealthy, white plantation owner and his black slave.  Although Paul’s mother is now free, she chooses to stay on the plantation and give her son the opportunity to know his father.  Paul’s father treats him like his own white children, until one day when Paul hits one of his white brothers.  Mr. Logan must make Paul understand that he is black and cannot hit a white man. The story takes the reader through Paul’s life, as he feels he does not fit in-—he is not accepted by the whites, because he is half black-- he is not accepted by the blacks, because he looks white.  In spite of many hardships, he perseveres to fulfill his dreams.  It is an inspirational story that brings to life an important part of American history.
