FRIDAY FOLDER anaheim hills campus may 20

PHOTO OF THE WEEK: Eighth Grade Travel Week to Washington, DC

The Eighth Graders spent an amazing week in our nation's capital, Washington, DC.  A few of the highlights of the trip were visiting the Capital, Washington Monument, Lincoln Monument, Monticello, Mount Vernon, The White House and even visiting New York to see the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building!

7th GRADE TRAVEL WEEK - GRAND CANYON
Last week I had the opportunity to accompany the 7th graders on their trip to the Grand Canyon. This is an amazing trip filled with adventure! We arrived in Phoenix where we boarded our busses and trekked to Montezuma's Castle just outside of Sedona, Arizona. There we learned about the native American tribes who build this amazing feat of engineering. Students learned about the lifestyle of these tribes and how environmental changes eventually led them to migrate to other areas. We continued our journey with a hike through the aspen groves on top of the San Francisco Peaks which overlook Flagstaff. Here the students saw how quickly the desert climate shifted to the mountain biome as it began to snow along our hike. That evening our group attending a tour of Powel Observatory, which is home to the telescope that helped to discover Pluto. Here students had the opportunity to view the rings of Saturn through a telescope as well as learn of NASA's most recent missions.

The next morning we rose early to go mountain biking around Bell Rock in Sedona. We then traveled to Slide Rock where students saw how the process of erosion from running water can create a fun water slide within the bedrock. We rose early again the next morning and headed for the Grand Canyon. Students enjoyed amazing panoramic views of the Canyon as they hiked down the Kaibab trail ¾ of a mile below the rim. Students observed the sediment layers and even caught a glimpse of some ancient sea life fossils trapped within the Kaibab limestone. After our hike we enjoyed a little relaxing time on the historic Grand Canyon Railway. Along the way, students saw deer, elk, galloping antelope, and enjoyed the traditional cowboy entertainment of harmonica music. Thursday morning we headed to the Glen Canyon Dam where we boarded rafts for an amazing trip down the Colorado river. The shear cliffs of the canyon towered over our heads and revealed the long history of the canyon. Our adventure continued that evening with a visit to a local rock climbing gym. On the last day of the trip we traveled to the Hoover Dam where students toured and learned how humans have harnessed the power of the mighty Colorado river in order to provide water and power to our homes. Students then enjoyed the excitement of the Adventure Dome at Circus Circus in Las Vegas. Our tired crew then flew home, happy to see their families and share their adventures! A wonderful time was had by all!!!

JK & KINDERGARTEN TAKE THE STAGE!
On Wednesday, May 11, the Jr. Kindergarten and Kindergarten students did an amazing job with their music performance! Students showed what a typical day in music class is like by singing, playing, dancing and learning with Mrs. Zavoral!

Jr. Kindergarten showed that they are learning to keep the beat, recognize the sounds of percussion instruments, and move to classical music. Parents joined the students in a fun circle game called "Bluebird."

Kindergarten students showed that they are learning to sing in tune, play drums, read a beat map, recognize rhythmic notation, and dance freely to classical music. Parents joined the students in their favorite listening and movement game, "Talking Piano."

The show ended with a Grand Finale that included all 90 students singing the West African folk song "Fanga Alafia" with African drums, rhythm sticks, maracas, bells, finger cymbals and scarves. What a show!

COUGAR CHORUS VOLUNTEERS AT HOAG HOSPITAL
On May 6, Cougar Chorus volunteered their afternoon free-time to perform at the Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach. A live recording of their singing in the chapel was broadcast into every room throughout the hospital. Patients, employees and doctors were uplifted by the beautiful music. The recording will be re-broadcast for patients in the coming days and months!

The Hospital Administrative Assistant, Maxine Tzur, was thrilled to have the group visit the hospital. She said, "This is such a rare occasion to have students perform here!" Her favorite piece was the students' version of "Soul Sister," a song from the popular band Train.

Cougar Chorus includes 50 students from 3rd, 4th and 5th grade. They rehearse before school under the direction of our music specialist, Mrs. Zavoral.

FACULTY LOUNGE anaheim hills' stephanie conklin loves the fairmont adventure

Anaheim Hills’ science teacher extraordinaire Ms. Stephanie Conklin discovered a love of teaching while she was attending UC Davis interning at an inner city school as a 7th grade science teacher.  She transferred to Cal State Fullerton where she earned her Biology degree in 2006.  Shortly after graduating, she joined Fairmont’s team as a guest teacher and extended day staff member.  Channeling her passion for science and education, she now teaches 6th grade earth science, the Animal Behavior elective, and elementary science lab (1st-5th grade).  Additionally, she serves as head pentathlon coach for 6th grade, DSL soccer coach, science curriculum coordinator for Anaheim Hills, and the new elementary science curriculum coordinator for all of Fairmont.

When we asked Stephanie what she liked most about teaching at Fairmont, here’s what she had to say:

“I love that the students challenge me to learn new concepts in science and explore areas I might not have otherwise. Working with 500+ students, each with his/her own ideas and interests leads me to amazing discussions on extremely varied topics. I love seeing the excitement on the students’ faces when they are completely engaged in the scientific process and their curiosity takes on a life of its own.

I also have the opportunity to join the students on several amazing fieldtrips throughout the year. In October, I accompanied the 6th graders up to the San Bernardino Mountains for five days of hiking and learning in the great outdoors. Students learn about the many ecosystems here in California while enjoying team building and leadership activities. In March, I had the pleasure of journeying to Catalina Island with the fifth graders to enjoy snorkeling and kayaking while learning about California costal ecosystems.

In April, the sixth graders and I went to the San Onofre Nuclear Power Plant to get a firsthand account of how our facilities have prepared to keep us safe in the event of a disaster such as the one experienced this spring in Japan. During our visit, the students’ level of questions and knowledge prompted the tour guide to bring in several experts. As we left, one senior engineer commented, “I’ll be keeping your names and numbers since I will be looking forward to hiring many of you when you are old enough!” I could not have been more proud of my students for their enthusiasm, manners, and level of engagement.

Most recently, I attending the 7th grade trip to the Grand Canyon where we enjoyed hiking, biking, rafting, rock climbing, star gazing, and so many amazing experiences! There is no end to the list of awesome opportunities I have had here at Fairmont! I cannot wait to see what adventure I will have next!”

SNACK TIME top six things to have in your kitchen

In January we were thrilled to have Chef Tanya of Native Foods come visit us at Anaheim Hills for a Chalk Talk. While she was there, she shared her suggestions on the top six things to keep in your kitchen at all times, and we wanted to share them with you! Read more and see pictures from the event on the Native Foods blog

Top Six Things to Have in Your Kitchen:

1. Oatmeal
Quick for a snack, a great breakfast with some berries and walnuts for you and the kids.
2. Legumes
These are lentils, garbanzos, black and red beans. Keeps your engine on. You can use to make ethnically diverse dishes. Think Mexican black beans, East Indian Lentils, Middle Eastern garbanzos, etc.
3. Dark Leafy Greens
Steam them, saute them, chop them in salads, add them to your cooked beans for a hearty soup.
4. Fresh Berries
An easy to eat fruit, kids can snack on them and they go good in the oatmeal.
5. Avocados
The California wonderfood. Slice them, spread them, guac them.
6. Olive Oil
Ready to make a fresh easy salad dressing or saute some onions and garlic for a flavor base for your grains, legumes, veggies and soups.

Third Grade Visits George Key Ranch
On April 28th the third grade went to George Key Ranch and experienced something they weren't expecting. They went back  in  time.  Can you imagine no Xbox  and no TV, no fast food.  What did these people do?  Well, we found out.  All of us got to do chores. We washed clothes on a scrub board.  Hung them on a clothes line, and then we  beat rugs so they would be clean. After that we found out that these people took their baths in the kitchen.  The oldest person in the family would go first then by age everyone would get a turn.  All washed in the same water.  By the time the youngest got their turn that water didn't look so good.  We were kind of glad that we didn't live in the early 1900's, and we were happy to be going back to our time.  It was a really fun field trip. Anytime  you feel a need to see how lucky you are, you  can go back in time and visit George Key Ranch.

Pre-School and Kindergarten Nutrition Presentations
Leslie Kay, MSN, from Nutrition Management Services talked to our youngest students about the importance of good eating habits and nutritious foods.  They talked about the 'good colors' of foods and that natural foods can be 'fun'.  They talked about different ways to eat fruits and vegetables.  Everyone sampled red grapes and frozen green grapes!

ARTS & CRAFTS celebrating mama

From picking us up at school to getting stains out of our jeans to baking hundreds of cookies for our class parties, Mom is always there when you need her. Mother's Day is a wonderful opportunity to show her how much you care, and a handmade gift always means the most. Make mom's day with some of these creative craft ideas from Martha Stuart's Holidays

Surprise mom with breakfast in bed (maybe pancakes complete with a whipped cream and chocolate chip smiley face??) and decorate the tray with these long-lasting tissue paper posies

Sometimes the things our mamas do are front-page worthy. Make your mom this Sunday's headline by printing this newspaper template and filling in a picture and story!

We hope your Mother's Day is special! Feel free to comment with your own craft ideas for mom.

Cougar Chorus Spring Concert
On Wed, April 13, the Cougar Chorus graced the stage with their beautiful singing. Cougar Chorus is for 3rd, 4th and 5th graders who love to sing, and it is directed by our music specialist, Mrs. Zavoral. Students meet twice a week before school to practice in the music studio.

This season, the chorus worked on singing in 2 and 3 part harmony and blending with their sections to sound like one voice. At the concert, they performed a variety of music including a Spring Hymn, a Russian folk song, and the pop song "Soul Sister" by Train. It was clear that the audience loved the performance because they gave the chorus a standing ovation!

Drama Proceeds Benefit UNICEF
Thanks to the supporters of the performing arts, the drama department was able to make a substantial donation to UNICEF for their Tap Project campaign.  For every ticket sold to "Grease," $1 was set aside to provide clean water to children in desperate situations around the globe.  Thank you to each and every ticketholder for supporting the arts and a wonderful charity.  We are happy to extend Fairmont's support of UNICEF through the Trick-or-Treat program, the Tap Project, and the UNICEF Club at the Prep, who hosted an information table at the performances.  Our Fairmont theater fans are making a difference - not only on our campus, but worldwide!

Pointillism Art for Sale

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT anaheim hills features megan mettler

Honor Roll student Megan Mettler has a heart for volunteerism and concern for her community that is truly remarkable. The seventh grader at Fairmont’s Anaheim Hills campus is involved in a number of charitable organizations including Adopt-a-Soldier, where she corresponds and sends care packages to a US solider overseas, and Sunday Nights Together, a program that provides a Sunday evening meal to hundreds of homeless in our community each week.  Megan has also started an organization to promote literacy called Kids READ!  She has collected over 13,000 books which she has distributed all over the county to individuals and organizations.  Megan’s involvement in community service is very hands-on.  She helps prepare the meals, set-up and clean-up for Sunday Nights Together.  She stays connected to her adopted soldier by corresponding frequently and sending a monthly care package.  Megan saves one-third of her weekly allowance, which her parent’s match, then donates the money to the charity of her choice.  For fun, the selfless teen, enjoys reading, going to musicals and attending UCLA games with her family.

BOOK REPORT celebrating national poetry month

In honor of National Poetry Month, our Fairmont campuses are sharing poetry anthologies to pique your child’s interest in the rhymes and rhythms of poetic verse.  And, we’d like to go a step further and motivate our students to write their own original poems.  To get their creative juices flowing, may we suggest:

Pizza, Pigs, and Poetry: How to Write a Poem
by Jack Prelutsky

Perfect for children in third-sixth grade, the former Children’s Poet Laureate uses comical anecdotes from his life and more than a dozen examples of his own poetry to inspire children to put pen to paper.  Prelutsky shows how kids can use their real life experiences—wacky things like playing with their food at the dinner table—as fodder for poetic writing.  In addition to tips and plenty of hair brained inspiration, he concludes the book with fun “poemstarts” to motivate even the most reticent to get writing.

We'd love to hear from our talented Fairmont poets.  Comment on this blog posting with your child's original poem!

BOOK REPORT anaheim hills looks to nature for poetic inspiration

The Great Frog Race: And Other Poems
by Kristine O'Connell George

This book has garnered many awards including the Lee Bennett Hopkins Poetry Award.  Here’s an excerpt from the author’s website (www.kristinegeorge.com) where she shares what The Great Frog Race is all about in her own words:(and don't forget to check out the author's other great poetry collections)

“The Great Frog Race was my first book and these twenty-eight poems were written over a period of about five years. The poems in this collection celebrate memories of my childhood: tadpoles, shooting stars, and an old farm dog named Zeke.  There are poems about singing off-key, getting lost with Mom, and a drowsy day-dreaming garden hose.  When I share my book with children I often bring my (very elegant!) metal bucket with "props" from some of the poems:  One egg (plastic!).  A length of garden hose.  A well-preserved dragonfly.  A sprig of lavender.  Maracas.  A saltine cracker.  A monkey wrench...  In talking to students, I hope to demystify poetry and help them understand that poetry is all around them, even in the humble ordinary objects in our everyday lives.”

FACULTY LOUNGE anaheim hills' wendy knudson makes a difference

Anaheim Hills’ first grade teacher Ms. Wendy Knudson has worked in Early Childhood Education since 1995, the past six years as a first grade teacher.  For five years running, she has achieved both the Model and Master Teacher designations in Reading and Math through Renaissance Learning.  Wendy has a B.S. in Child and Adolescent Studies from Cal State, Fullerton and has completed Masters level coursework in Education.  She welcomes the challenges inherent in teaching first graders and relishes the opportunity to “make a difference in the lives of young learners.”  To unwind from a day spent hard at work shaping the lives of her little ones, Wendy escapes to the spa or indulges in retail therapy.  She also enjoys reading and volunteering at her church.
