SNACK TIME kiwifruit makes it easy (and yummy) to go green

There are plenty of foods associated with the celebration of St. Patrick's Day, but unfortunately, not many of them appeal to kids (cornbeef and cabbage) and some of them (green beer) are definitely not appropriate for the under-21 set.  Luckily, California farmers have a delicious, healthy, green alternative to traditional Irish faire that your kids will love--the kiwifruit.

According to the California Kiwi Commission's website, California produces around 98 percent of the kiwifruit grown in the US. Kiwifruit has remained a relatively small agricultural industry in California made up of less than 300 growers who farm around 13 acres each.

Did you know kiwifruit has nearly two-and-a-half times the recommended daily allowance of vitamin C and more fiber than a bowl of bran cereal?  Yep, it’s true.  You can support California’s local small farms AND offer your kids a scrumptious, nutritious snack.

Slice them atop oatmeal or yoghurt, whip up a kiwi-themed smoothie, or create a fun dessert “pizza” with kiwi toppings. Kids love the sweet and sour taste, the seedy crunch, and the strange furry exterior.  For recipes visit www.kiwifruit.org.

Junior High Science Fair
The Seventh and Eighth grade students have been working on science fair projects for the past two months and on Tuesday they were judged on their scientific presentations.  Their project consisted of them proposing a experiment, with a hypothesis and conclusion.  This project is an important piece of the science curriculum as they learn all of the details involved in an experiment, such as keeping meticulous records of their research, learning about variables and postive and negative conclusions.

Second Graders Have "Wild" Time at the Zoo
Recently, the 2nd graders went on a field trip to the Santa Ana Zoo. While there, they toured the grounds. Some of the animals they saw were monkeys, birds, ostriches, llamas, and a hog. It was amazing to see the animals up close! The students' favorite part of the field trip was when they went into the classroom to dissect owl pellets. They were able to see what owls eat. Many students found tiny bird and rodent skulls, body parts, and teeth. Everyone had a great day at the zoo!

National Spelling Bee

This was the 48th Annual Orange County Scripps National Spelling Bee, final round. Fifty finalists, from twenty-eight public schools and seven private schools,  competed Saturday, February 26 at the Orange County Department of Education. All the finalists should be commended on their high caliber vocabulary skills. The Orange County Register has been partnered with the Scripps National Spelling Bee for the past nineteen years. The Register sponsors the winner and a family member's trip to Washington D.C. for the National Bee. The National Bee will be held during the week of May 29-June 3, 2011.

Alison R., an 8th grade student at Fairmont Private Schools - Edgewood Campus, bravely spelled down 42 of the county's best spellers, making it to the final Top Ten Spellers of Orange County, California. Alison held on for two more rounds, but nerves being on edge and anxiety running high, was felled next round. She received a Plaque and a cash award for her valiant efforts. Fairmont - Mable also had a representative, Michelle Phan, who succumbed in an earlier round. It certainly pays to be a good etymologist!

Tiki Time Re-enrollment: Crazy Hair Day

The Citron students were excited on our last Fun Friday and came to school in our crazy hair or crazy hat theme.Both boys and girls wore their hair spiked in different direction and all colors of the rainbow. Some teachers and students chose to come in a silly hat like one with a propeller, a lobster hat, or hat covered with pins and buttons. Thanks to all the students and teachers that have participated in all Fun Fridays.  

Character Counts – Go Green

For the month of March our campus will observe the color green for RESPONSIBILITY. 

Responsibility means do what you are suppose to do, persevere: Keep on trying, think before you act, be accountable for your words, actions, and attitudes. Students can learn responsibility by helping take care of a garden, a pet, or doing chores at home. We continue to recognize the children’s efforts in the area of Fairness, Respect, Trustworthiness, and Caring. Together with the help of our campus mascot “Hero”, the students will gain an understanding of the importance of good character.

SCHOOL NEWS edgewood speller places eighth in county bee

Eighth grader Alison R. of Fairmont's Edgewood campus bravely spelled down 42 of the county’s best spellers, making it to the final round of the fourty-eighth annual Orange County Scripps National Spelling Bee. Fifty finalists, from twenty-eight public schools and seven private schools, competed Saturday, February 26 at the Orange County Department of Education. Alison placed 8th overall in the county.  She received a plaque and a cash award for her valiant efforts.

Open House Highlights

Open House was a great success this year!  Over 2000 parents and students attended this amazing event.  All the Junior High, Elementary and Pre-school classrooms looked absolutely spectacular.  The teachers and students have worked so hard to show off all their progress this year.  Cougar Chorus and the cast of "Grease" performed in the MPR while the book fair was going on!  The FPA had a great silent auction going on in the gym and Nutrition Management Services had yummy treats in the cafeteria.  The 2011 summer camp program "The Great Outdoors" kicked off in the wonderful forest room.

Student Spotlight

Congratulations to Ted Y. (Mrs. Cornish's 4th Grade Class) for taking 1st place state-wide  for the 2010 Energy Appreciation Day Power Draw Contest.   The Anaheim Hills 4th Grade students recently participated in a comic strip contest hosted by California's Energy Coalition.  These students, as well as many other students from schools throughout California, created a comic strip which illustrated how to use the 4 Peak Energy Actions to save energy at home and/or school.   "PEAK is a comprehensive standards-base educational program designed to empower elementary and middle school students with the knowledge to manage energy use in their homes, schools, and communities.  The Peak Student Energy Actions Program was recently recognized as the best children's environmental education program in the state."   We are very proud of Ted and this wonderful achievement!

Preston G. starts a "Book Club"

Third Grader, Preston loves to read and has started a "Book Club" !  Her neighborhood has a "Kid's Club" and she asked if she could start a "Book Club" also.  The kids in the club vote for the book that they all want to read, and then meet to discuss the story as they are reading.  She has three reading groups, 3-5 years old, 6-9 years old and 10 and up so they can pick a book that is age-appropriate.  Preston's favorite books are the Judy Moody series, the Stink series and Berenstein Bears series!
