With Halloween approaching, why not make snack time a bit wacky this month?  Popcorn monster hands do just the trick without being too much of a (sweet) treat! 

Shopping List:
- Food handling gloves
- Twist ties
- Popcorn
- Candy corn

After popping the kernels, there isn't much to this recipe except assembly.  The best part is using candy corn for the finger tips!

LUNCHBOX nutritious lunch box suggestions

Last Tuesday, Whole Foods Market's Healthy Eating Specialist Gerrie Adams joined us for a fantastic Chalk Talk about easy and healthful ways to cook for a family. She shared a creative list of nutritious lunch box suggestions that we wanted to share with all of you!

• Yummy Oat Bars (see recipe here)  
• Sticks and Stones 
• Carrot Sticks, Celery Sticks, Jicama Sticks, Nuts, Granola Clusters 
• Pita Pockets 
• You can put anything in these easy to stuff treats! 
• Ants on a Log 
• Celery filled with peanut butter or cream cheese topped with ants (raisins) 
• Fruit Dippers
• Apple Slices 
• Carrots
• Banana Splits 
• Take one banana and cut in half, place at bottom of container 
• Sprinkle favorite cereal or granola on top 
• Top with favorite yogurt 
• Finish off with some blueberries or strawberries
• Roll Ups 
• Spread a whole wheat tortilla with hummus. Add favorite veggies (artichokes, cucumbers, tomatoes, leafy greens, picks, etc) and cut them down to easy to eat pinwheel shapes.
• Smoothie Shakers 
•  Put your favorite smoothie in a shaker cup and freeze the night before. Smoothie should be ready to shake and drink at lunch time.
• Trail Mixes 
• Use prepared store mixes or make your own with your children's favorite treats. Add cocoa nibs for that little something extra.
• Peanut Butter Snackers 
• Make your own little peanut butter crackers using a low calorie, crunchy rice cracker. 
• Rice and Grain Salads 
• Bagleicious Sandwiches
• Use whole wheat or whole grain bagels instead of bread to give a different twist to sandwiches

"Original Works" in Time for Holiday Gifts 
The Mable Campus has selected the Original Works company to run a very special program at our school. Through the Original Works program, parents have the opportunity to purchase a variety of products featuring their child's very own artwork.

Order forms with a photocopy of each child's artwork produced at school will be arriving home soon. Additional works of art can be ordered by submitting artwork on 8½ by 11 inch paper. Orders are due October 22nd.

The following are the fabulous lessons that will be used for this project:

1st grade: Fantasy Cats or Dogs inspired by Laurel Burch
2nd grade: Clowns inspired by Georges Rouault
3rd grade: Rainforest Toucans inspired by Audubon
4th grade: Marine Life inspired by Wyland

Chalk Talk: Derek Sabori

You are never too small to make a difference according to Derek Sabori, head of Environmental Affairs at Volcom and author of children's books.  Sabori has made it his mission to share his vision of a healthy and sustainable future for his two children by self publishing children's Eco-Action Adventure picture books including the Lu and the Earth Bug Crew series.  The series is intended to reel kids into an active and healthy lifestyle that focuses on conservation and environmentalism while being a good friend and having fun doing it!

On October 19th, you are invited to join Derek Sabori and learn how your family can become more environmentally friendly.  Bring your little ones along for a fun and interactive reading of Sabori's book!  The first five families to RSVP will receive a copy of Lu and the Earth Bug Crew.

Congratulations 1st Place Cheer Squad
"I've got the magic in me!" The Edgewood Cheerleaders won first place at the Tustin Tiller Day parade and competition on October 2nd.  They have been working very hard since the beginning of the school year to perfect their competition routine.  The routine consisted of a cheer and a dance to the song "Magic" by the group B.O.B.  During the parade, the team endured changes in weather that included rain, drizzle, and the hot sun as they cheered down the streets of Old Town Tustin.  When they stopped to perform in front of the judges, they were full of smiles, energy, and enthusiasm.  Their coaches Joanna del Carmen and Blaire Bradley are very proud of the team and look forward to more competitions this school year.  Next stop, the UCA Southern California competition in Irvine on November 13th! Go Eagles!

This is the Funniest Night of the year. The entrance fee is $25 per person which gains you entrance and $200 in chips. The first 100 tickets sold receive an extra $100 in chips. There are various games offered which include poker, black jack, roulette in the gym and Bingo in the MPR room. At the end of the night, turn in chips for raffle tickets for prizes around the room. Prizes consist of 3 days 2 nights in Vegas, 3 days 2 nights in Laughlin for adults, bowling parties of up to 8 people including pizza and soda, and DVD's with popcorn and candy boxes for students. Food and drinks are also available at Casino Night. Feelin' Lucky!

This week Language Arts Mastery Tests and Math Mastery Tests were given to grades 2-6, Children’s Progress Testing was administered in Pre-School and First Grade.  This testing will be also given later in the year to monitor student’s progress over the year.

Cougar sports had a great week with the Tri-Ways boys football and the Tri-Way girls volleyball teams defeating the Pegasus Thunder!  This is the first win over the Thunder for both teams!  Kudos to football coach Martin Bloomingdale and volleyball coach Marcus Arias!  Coach Arias’ volleyball team is now 5-0, and undefeated.  Our football team is 4-1 and having a great season as well! 

Friday, October 8 was Lee Jeans “Denim Day” and for a $5.00 to Breast Cancer Research everyone could wear jeans and PINK!  This fund-raising effort is spear-headed by first grade teacher, Marci Shaffer, as it is a personal goal of hers to encourage Breast Cancer Research.  The Lee Jeans “Denim Day” one day program raises more money for research than any other single day!!  Thank you Marci for all your efforts.

"A Meal That Changes A Holiday...A Message That Changes A Lifetime."
The Boxes of Love effort kicks off this week.  We will be collecting boxes filled with 'your love' from October 5 through October 22.  Canning Hunger distributes these boxes to less fortunate families in Orange County, and they are hoping to help 22,000 families this holiday season. 

This is a great opportunity to go to the grocery store with your child and help them shop for their gift to others!  Planting the 'seeds' of philanthropy!

Double the Hoops, Double the Fun in P.E.

Eating the Alphabet
The boys and girls learned that eating healthy is important in a short presentation that was given by our nutritionist Leslie Kay this past Thursday. The students were able to identify a fruit or vegetable for each letter of the alphabet and learned that to keep healthy they need to eat a fruit or vegetable 5 times a day.

Yoplait Pink Lids
Did you know that October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month?  The Citron Campus along with Mrs. Gormin at the Mable Campus will be collecting the pink lids from the Yoplait Yogurts. This will be Mrs. Gormin’s 4th year collecting and our 2nd. Our goal is to collect 1,000 pink lids; Fairmont came very close to that amount last year. Please save only the Pink lids, clean them off and turn them in at the office to Mrs. Elly. Yoplait is donating 10 cents per lid to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. We hope to keep collecting through the end of the year.

If you were satisfied with your child's photo proofs and would like to place an order, you may refer to the back of the pamphlet. Place order form along with payment in the envelope provided and return to your child's teacher  no later than this Friday, October 15th .
If you are not satisfied with your child’s picture you may return the proof packet to your child’s teacher. The student I.D. is yours to keep, no need to return. Your child will then re-take their picture on October 27th for picture re-take day.
