FRIDAY FOLDER citron campus december 3

 SHOW & TELL
Character Counts – December/ January
The months of December and January are represented by the color blue and the pillar TRUSTWORTHINESS.  Ways to be trustworthy include being honest, being reliable and being a good friend. We also continue to recognize children’s efforts in the areas of Fairness-Orange and Respect-Yellow.We invite parents to join in the efforts of building our rainbow and would like you to give out the colored blocks to anyone you see acting on a Character Counts deed. Together with the help of our campus mascot “Hero,” the students will gain an understanding of the importance of good character.

CHOC Toy Drive
This Friday the campus will have our annual caroling and toy drive pick-up. There will be a presentation with the toys that have been collected for the CHOC hospital to the Harley Riding “Santa’s.” The campus will echo with the sound of approximately 70 motorcycles and the gleams of admiration from all the students as the riders come on campus. We have been lucky to collect as many as 7 big boxes filled with toys in the past and hope to collect the same or more this year. Many thanks to Judy Coderre who organizes this annual event and the Parent board who provides breakfast for the Harley Rider’s.

SNACK TIME "a" is for apples

A is for "Apples," one of the most popular, flavorful and healthful fruit grown in the world. Do you have a favorite fruit?  Three-fourths of Americans name apples as their favorite fruit to snack on.

The state of Washington is the largest grower followed by New York, Michigan, California and many other states producing about 2500 varieties.

Do you have a favorite variety? I love Fuji and Honey Crisp.   Most popular in the US include red delicious (a Fairmont favorite), Golden Delicious, Fuji, Granny Smith, Rome, McIntosh, Gala, and Jonathon. Which one is your favorite?

Does an apple-a-day really keep the doctor away?  Maybe. In addition to vitamins and mineral, apples are a rich source of pectin, a type of fiber with a number of protective health benefits including acting as an antioxidant, and lowering risk for colon cancer, high blood pressure and gall stones. Apples are also high in flavonoids, another compound with heart health benefits.

So whether you eat apples for their health benefits or just because they taste good consider eating apples in your daily snack routine!

FACULTY LOUNGE citron celebrates creative, experienced kindergarten teachers

Kindergarten is a special time in a child's life and Citron has some super special kindergarten teachers.

Dr. Janet Molina has 30 years of teaching experience with the last 20 years spent as a kindergarten teacher at the Citron campus. Janet has two children (both college graduates) who attended the Citron campus. She loves seeing the excitement in a student who first learns to read or one who begins to "think mathematically." Janet enjoys spending time with her family and attending USC games.

Citron has had the pleasure of having Ms. Karen Young at Fairmont for 29 years, all of which have been with kindergarten students. Karen was born and raised in San Diego, which is why her favorite teams are the Padres and the Chargers.  When you visit Room 2, you might notice items such as Annie, Woody, the Running Man, a miniature podium, and even a real stop light. All of which were made by Ms. Young’s dad. You will also notice a picture of Frank Sinatra, one of Karen Young’s favorite singers. If you are a student in her class you will learn to sing some of his classics. Karen’s hobbies include golfing and fishing.

In 1967, Mrs. Patsy Bauman attended Fairmont Private School for her kindergarten year. Thirty years later, she returned to Fairmont as an educator and has been at the Citron campus for 13 years. In addition to her love for children, both biological and those of the kindergarten variety, she enjoys her friends, home, garden, animals, nature, and baking. Mrs. Bauman is very artistic and it shows in her classroom and in the variety of fun activities she plans for her students.

We are so fortunate here at the Citron campus to have such experienced, passionate kindergarten teachers.  They have a lifelong love of learning and are happy to share it with anyone who visits their classrooms.

TEACHER'S PET walter and maude the bearded dragons

Mr. Joseph Edmisten and his wife, Tracy have been proud owner’s of bearded dragons, Maude and Walter, for about a year and a half. Mr. Edmisten enjoys the reptiles because they are very docile. Recently, Maude laid a total of 65 eggs in three clutches. Clutches are a batch of eggs laid 3 weeks apart.  After Maude laid the eggs, they incubated for 60 to 75 days. After incubation, the baby bearded dragons hatched  and within four weeks they are ready to go to their new families. Bearded dragons originate from the Australian desert. In order to survive in captivity, they need a desert-like climate. Therefore, Mr. Edmisten must keep his environment between 80 and 110 degrees. Due to their hardy nature, bearded dragons have become one of the most popular reptiles in American homes.

TEACHER'S PET puff the hissing cockroach

Greetings from Room 4!  My name is Puff and I live in a giant tank in Mrs. Bauman’s kindergarten classroom.  I have been in school for about 6 years now as have my many brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles and nieces, nephews and cousins.  We live between Cisco the ball python and Tootsie the millipede in a lovely sunny spot near the back of the class.  I think we are the most fortunate class pets on the planet.  We get to see and hear many exciting and new things every day.  Sometimes Mrs. Bauman lets the children hold us.  We like to put on a show for the kids by puffing up and hissing for them.  The best part of our day is when the class brings us their lunch leftovers.  Our favorite lunch item is lettuce.  If it is  really quiet in the class, you can hear us munching.  Stop in for a visit one day, we love to make new friends!

Voting Day Results
Citron students joined the rest of the nation and voted on Tuesday, November 2nd! They had a tough choice to make: choosing between an ice cream party or a donut party. Ice cream won by a landslide, beating out donuts 128 to 57. The students will see the results of their votes on Tuesday, November 9th when they will enjoy ice cream at snack.

Character Counts – Respect
We are continuing to build our Character Counts rainbow for the month of November with yellow for “Respect”.  Our teachers have begun discussing the meaning and how the students can show respect at school and home. Feel free to join us and speak with your child about respect and the importance of using good manners, being tolerant and accepting of differences, being considerate of others feelings and not hitting or hurting anyone. As we recognize each child for demonstrating good character, we will give him or her a brick to add to the rainbow corresponding with the color of his or her good deed. We would like parents to also join in the efforts of building our rainbow and would like you to give out yellow bricks to anyone you see acting respectful around campus. Together with the help of our campus mascot “Hero,” the students will gain an understanding of the importance of good character. Feel free to come and take a look at how many students have been respectful so far for the month of November!

SHOW & TELL
Halloween Parade
This past Thursday the Citron Campus was taken over by ghosts, ghouls, and princesses! We have never seen such a variety of costumes. Every child walked around the elementary yard in our annual Halloween Parade to show off their costumes to family and friends. Afterward they all danced to a Michael Jackson montage for all the parents who attended. We would like to give a big thanks to all our staff and parent volunteers that helped make our campus look so spooky and ensured the children had a great time with all of our Halloween activities.

Candy Drive
Operation Candy Drive started off Monday. We have a collection box in the lobby until Friday, November 5th. We hold the drive around Halloween and collect extra, unused Halloween candy for the servicemen and servicewomen in the military. Please feel free to donate any store bought candy or extra Trick-or-Treating candy.

Citron Votes
On Tuesday, November  2nd, all students will have the opportunity to vote. The children will make a tough choice between an ice cream party or a donut party. We want our students to understand the importance of voting and making their voice heard, just as many adults will also do that day.

SNACK TIME eating the alphabet

On October 7th, the preK – K children at Citron enjoyed an interactive presentation on nutrition. Using the book Eating The Alphabet by Lois Ehlert as a visual guide, the children participated with great enthusiasm in guessing the name of a fruit or a vegetable that began with the letter A, B, C, etc.

Can you guess? A = (apples, apricot, artichoke, avocado)

B was for banana, blueberries and yes, even broccoli. The children said that they LIKE broccoli. Hmmm I wonder if their parents would agree. That would be great!

C was for carrots, cherries, and corn.

D was for Dates (that was a hard one).

Can you guess what vegetable begins with the letter “E”? Hint: it’s a type of lettuce.

The older children made it all the way to “F”. The presentation concluded with the song, “Five a Day” emphasizing eating five servings of fruits and vegetables every day. There was lots of singing and even dancing to the music. We all had fun, and I look forward to presenting again in November at Fairmont!

Enjoy eating your alphabet!

BOOK REPORT opposites attract in citron book review

Fluffy the porcupine is not happy with his name. He makes several attempts to change himself so that he better fits his name. He is unsuccessful and frustrated. Eventually, he meets a rhinoceros that is also misnamed. They become friends because of their names.

This is a fun book to read with your children at home and reinforce language arts skills by talking about synonyms and antonyms.  For example, imagine another animal, like a giraffe.  Then have your children think of words that describe a giraffe like tall, thin, and long neck, and words that are the opposite like short, wide, etc.
