One of a Kind Walk
On October 17th, over 14,000 Walkers strolled through Disneyland, Disney California Adventure Park and Downtown Disney for the 20th Annual CHOC Walk in the Park in support of CHOC. Children's.
Walkers raised close to 2 million dollars in support of the Orange County Children’s Hospital. The Citron Campus had a small group of walkers that got to experience this one of a kind walk this year. When you arrive at Disneyland you are overwhelmed by the number of families that are walking for their loved one or in support of a child. As we walk through the park we are joined by many familiar Disney friends and were cheered on by supporting cast members and families. We had many unique photo opportunities, and definitely felt like kids again. At the end of the 5K the celebration continued in the Downtown Disney area where event sponsors, shops, and restaurants had special offers for all. Our Citron group enjoyed participating in the Choc walk this year and we can’t wait for the next one.

TEACHER'S PET roxy and tango

Roxy is a mischievous dog that can perform many tricks, and Tango is a giant guard dog in an 8 pound body.  They both love to play until Tango has had enough, that’s when she puts Roxy in her place.  Both dogs are very well-educated...Roxy is Canine Good Citizen Certified (like doggy college), and Tango will be graduating from Elementary Good Citizen Certification next week!

My favorite memory with Roxy is the first time I met her and she would not stop kissing me. I make new favorite memories with Tango every time she attacks one of her toys and turns into ‘Cujo’!

TEACHER'S PET axel the labrador

Hello, my name is Axel. I am 6 years old. I am a black labrador and am the friendliest dog ever. I love to swim at the beach, play catch with my ball, and make new friends! On the weekends, my best friend, Mr. Powell, takes me to dog beach in Del Mar. It's the best time of my week.

SHOW & TELL
Jog-a-thon News
A huge “Thank You” to all the parents and volunteers for a great jog-a-thon!  We loved seeing all the parents come out and cheer for the children! All the students did such an amazing job running as fast as they could and trying to get as many laps as possible run in 5 minutes. There were as many as 10 laps by preschool and 20 plus laps by an elementary student. The Citron Campus would also like to thank all the family and friends who sponsored children and helped with our jog-a-thon fundraiser. Great job everyone!
Preschool Is Watching Their Gardens Grow
Preschoolers love to help with all types of activities, and gardening is no exception.  The children love to dig in the garden and water plants.  This year we are providing our students the opportunity to grow flowers, fruits, and vegetables in their own class gardens!  This is part of a new outdoor education component added to our preschool curriculum. Over the past week we have seen the children digging holes, gently patting the soil around newly placed plants and watering. Even though we have installed a drip system the students are watering their own plants. We have taken care to include only child-safe plants in our gardens.  Our collection of gardening tools is just beginning and we would appreciate any donations especially small watering cans or any kid-sized gardening implements. We can't wait to watch as the garden continues to grow and flourish!    (Contributed by Mrs. Douglas)

Eating the Alphabet
The boys and girls learned that eating healthy is important in a short presentation that was given by our nutritionist Leslie Kay this past Thursday. The students were able to identify a fruit or vegetable for each letter of the alphabet and learned that to keep healthy they need to eat a fruit or vegetable 5 times a day.

Yoplait Pink Lids
Did you know that October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month?  The Citron Campus along with Mrs. Gormin at the Mable Campus will be collecting the pink lids from the Yoplait Yogurts. This will be Mrs. Gormin’s 4th year collecting and our 2nd. Our goal is to collect 1,000 pink lids; Fairmont came very close to that amount last year. Please save only the Pink lids, clean them off and turn them in at the office to Mrs. Elly. Yoplait is donating 10 cents per lid to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. We hope to keep collecting through the end of the year.
Many thanks for all your support!

SHOW & TELL
Character Counts
Have you noticed something new outside Mrs. Douglas’ office? We are helping Hero the Husky Pup build a rainbow! Each month we are teaching monthly pillars. As we recognize each child’s good deeds, we will give him or her a brick to add to the rainbow corresponding with the color of their good deed. Below are each month’s good deeds and colors.

October: Fairness – Orange
November: Respect – Yellow
December/January: Trustworthiness – Blue
February: Caring – Red
March: Responsibility – Green
April: Citizenship – Purple
May/June: All Pillars

Together with the help of our campus mascot “Hero”, the students will gain an understanding of the importance of good character. Feel free to come and take a look at how many students have been fair so far for the month of October!

Jog-A-Thon
Citron students will join together in our annual Jog-A-Thon on Wednesday, October 6th. This is a fun, campus-wide spirit event in which the students walk/jog laps to the cheers of or in the company of parents and teachers. Our Jog-A-Thon encourages exercise and also helps raise funds for the Citron Fairmont Parent's Association for our activities throughout the year.
We encourage you to come cheer for you child! We also hope that you, your family, and your friends will consider being a sponsor for your child’s Jog-A-Thon efforts. Please check with the office for more information and to pick up your pledge form.

Box Tops
The Box Top Program is a fundraiser program where our campus receives $0.10 for each Box Top coupon redeemed. Box top coupons can be found on hundreds of commonly used household items and food brands including: Cheerios, Betty Crocker, Pillsbury, Ziploc, Kleenex, and Hefty. A collection box is located at the front desk.
To encourage our students to participate, we will be recording the coupon amounts received by classroom and reward the top class with a special party after each of the collection deadlines. A handout will be given out next week with more information.

SNACK TIME celebrating national rice month

September is National Rice Month with an entire week (4th week of September) dedicated to recognize a staple food eaten by people all around the world. A versatile grain with over 40,000 varieties, rice can be prepared and eaten for breakfast, as a main meal, a soup or even dessert depending on the ingredients and type of rice used.

Rice comes in various shades of brown, red and even yellow. From a nutrition standpoint brown or whole grain rice is higher in B vitamins, fiber, and trace minerals than white rice which has been processed to remove the outer coating (the bran) and the germ. Rice is high in carbohydrates, easy to digest and provides quick energy for the body to use as fuel.

For a variety of rice recipes to try with your family, visit the USA Rice Federation Recipe Page

FACULTY LOUNGE citron welcomes ms.dodson

The Citron campus would like to welcome Ms. Dodson to the Fairmont family! You can find her in the front office as our new receptionist and admissions assistant.  Ms. Dodson comes to us with a B.S. in Child and Adolescent Development as well as a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential from Cal State Fullerton. During college, she volunteered at multiple schools in the Fullerton Elementary and Lowell Joint School Districts. Most recently, she worked as an instructor in an after-school program in the Santa Ana Unified School District. When she’s not helping in a myriad of ways here on campus, Ms. Dodson enjoys cooking, cycling, going to the beach, attending concerts, and spending time with her friends. We are excited to have an addition to our support staff who is so experienced in working with students. Please stop by the front office and say “hello” to Ms. Dodson.

TEACHER'S PET patches

Patches is a Papillon, a dog in the Spaniel family named for the French word for butterfly due to the long, fringed hair on their ears which creates the shape of a butterfly when their ears are raised. Patches just celebrated his thirteenth birthday, and he has lived with Alyssa, the Marketing Intern, and her family since he was a puppy. Patches' absolute favorite past-time is riding in the car with his mom (as you can see in this picture). When he's not cruising around town, he enjoys spending time with his daughters Penny and Little Bear (pictured below).
The three enjoy going on walks around the neighborhood together and lounging around the house with the family on the weekends. Patches is a very picky eater, but he can always count on Little (or should I say Not-So-Little) Bear to help him out when he has extra food.
Patches is also the best watch dog! (unlike Penny-his sleepy counterpart) He keeps the family safe and sound at all times.

BOOK REPORT batty love

A face only a mother could love—that’s how you might describe Stellaluna, a sweet little fruit bat who stars in a book of the same name by Janell Cannon.  Perfect for children ages 4-8, Stellaluna is the story of a baby bat who becomes separated from her mother and is adopted by a family of birds.  She tries her best to fit in around the nest, struggling against her batty inclinations.  Ultimately, she discovers she’s unique and perfect just the way she is.  A story of perseverance, friendship and love, Stellaluna is beautifully illustrated and features “Bat Notes”--an informative epilogue that turns your bedtime story into an impromptu science lesson
