Per the suggestion of our friend Martin, we wanted to share the recipe for Starbucks' delicious pumpkin scones! They are the perfect breakfast treat for the fall season and pair wonderfully with a cup of coffee or tea. Happy  baking everyone!

Long Beach Aquarium Field Trip

Third Grade went to the Long Beach Aquarium on Tuesday and had a wonderful time….great weather, great company and lots of fun fish!  They had a classroom presentation and learned about plankton!  All the Third Graders loved the splash zone, where they got to touch stingrays and sea anemone’s and lots of other creatures!

Junior High Concert
The Junior High instrumental elective class had their first concert with the violins, woodwinds and brass all performing a great selection of songs, including Abbey Road by the Beatles!  It was terrific to see how much they have improved and to truly enjoy the wonderful melodies.

Sports

DSL Football and Volleyball had their final games of the season and ended with a pair of victories!  Go Cougars!

Fun Friday
The Junior High went on their first “Fun Friday” of this school year, visiting Boomer’s in Irvine.  Our students loved riding the go-carts, climbing the rock wall and playing lots and lots of video games!  They work so hard every day of the school year and this outing was a welcome relief and reward for all the effort they show every day.

Fairmont Students Earn 64 Awards in Johns Hopkins Talented Youth Event
On October 2, 2010, 37 students from Fairmont Private School campuses were honored at the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth (CTY) 2010 awards ceremony held on the campus of Cal State Polytechnic University, Pomona.   Fairmont students took home a total of 64 awards based upon their performance on tests taken last academic year, including two Top in Country awards and three Top in State awards.  Sixth grader Ejay Cho placed first in the nation in the SCAT Quantitative category for fifth grade.  Ninth grader Winston Lee placed first in the nation for eighth grade in the SAT Math category.
 
The awards ceremony honors students according to their exceptional performance on a rigorous, above-grade-level test given to second through eighth grade CTY Talent Search participants. Seventh and eighth graders take the SAT or ACT, the same tests used for college admissions. Second through sixth graders take the SCAT, an above-level test scaled for younger students.

The results of these tests give families a better idea of a child's academic strengths, particularly in comparison to the thousands of other academically talented students in the Talent Search. Students can also earn recognition at CTY's awards ceremonies, and their test scores may qualify them for CTY's summer programs and distance education courses.

In 2009-10 alone, over 53,000 students from 21 states and the District of Columbia participated in the Talent Searches offered through CTY. About 30 percent of the second and sixth graders who tested this past winter earned an invitation to CTY's awards ceremony, and about 25 percent of the seventh and eighth grade testers earned an invitation to an awards ceremony.

Last year, The Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth worked directly with the Mable Campus to promote the program to our students.  It's an honor to be recognized as a top local school and a thrill to see so many of our students receive awards in this prestigious program.

Mable 4th Graders Step Back in Time
The fourth graders at Mable Elementary recently participated in the Time Capsule Study Program sponsored by the Ocean Institute in Dana Point.  We became pioneers for two days at the Lazy W Ranch near San Juan Capistrano.  California history came alive with many hands-on experiences.  We also learned to appreciate the resourcefulness of our early ancestors.
   
Our day began with a tour of Mission San Juan Capistrano.  The students had an opportunity to experience the daily operation of life on one of the twenty-one California missions.  After visiting the mission, we journeyed a few miles to the Lazy W Ranch. We participated in various activities such as making bricks from mud and straw and grinding corn to make tortillas.  Fourth grade pioneers built a dwelling from tree branches as the Native Americans would have done. They also practiced archaeology by excavating fossils and learned which herbs to use for medicinal purposes.   We spent the evening making candles and weaving headbands and ended the day with a lively fiesta, complete with a piñata.    
   
The next morning brought a few more activities before heading home.  We had an opportunity to journey to the gold fields after buying supplies at Sam Brennan's store.  We also learned to construct modern conveniences such as showers and light bulbs.   While no one struck it rich in gold, we found wealth in our experiences and appreciation for early California life.

Miss Nelson is Missing!
After weeks of anticipation, the first graders went on their first field trip on October 26th.  They attended the play "Miss Nelson is Missing," based on the book Miss Nelson is Missing by Harry Allard.   The students were excited as they rode in the buses to the Ebell Theatre in Santa Ana.
   
For many of the students, this was their first time seeing a play.  All of the students and parent chaperones enjoyed themselves. After the play was over, the students had the opportunity to ask the cast questions.  On the way back to school, we stopped at a nearby park.  At the park, the students ate their lunches and played.  It was a great end to a fun day.

Toy Drive for CHOC
Monday, Nov. 15th - Friday, Dec. 10th

The spirit of the holiday season is underway and it's time for our 11th Annual Toy Drive starting Monday, Nov. 15th, and ending Friday, Dec. 10th. This event is sponsored by the Character Development Department at the Edgewood Campus, and it is our fourth year in participating. With appreciation to all who participate, we are asking all our families to help us by donating a toy for a boy or girl who is in CHOC - Children's Hospital of Orange County. These children would truly benefit from receiving a special gift on Christmas morning and all year long.

Due to infection control and in order to protect the patients, the toys MUST be NEW and UNWRAPPED. We are unable to send USED toys to the hospital. The toys will be picked up at school by one of our business office staff people, Judy Coderre, and her friends from the Orange Coast Harley Davidson's Chapter. They will come to the Edgewood Campus on Friday, December 10th from 11:40-12:15 pm via motorcycles to pick up the toys.

If you would like to donate toys to a patient at CHOC, please drop off at your child's classroom now till the December 10th. Thank you in advance for your kindness and generosity.

All Stars Caden S. and Kieran M. both played extremely well in the 2010 Tri Way League All Star Game Tuesday, November 9th.   Playing for the North team, quarterback Caden S. scored a touchdown on a long run from scrimmage with just minutes to go to put his team back within a touchdown. Final score was the
South 28 and the North 22.

1st Grade Diwali Presentation
A big thank you to Mrs. Khurana, Mrs. Chaturvedi, Mrs. Cavale, and Mrs. Trivedi who gave a colorful and delicious presentation about the Indian celebration of Diwali!  We delighted in the stunning photographs of this colorful celebration on the Promethean board, which brought the tradition alive!  The first graders learned about this lovely celebration and saw their classmates, mothers, and Mrs. Brown dress in traditional Indian clothing.  We also sampled Indian treats!

Food Drive Continues

With Thanksgiving right around the corner the Citron Campus likes to do its part to help those in need.  We will be hosting a food drive to benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County from 11/8 – 11/29. Items that are in great need are all non-perishables, stuffing, rice, canned items, toilet paper and shampoo. Classrooms will have a friendly competition and the winning classroom will win a turkey trophy to proudly display!

SCOREBOARD game highlights: anaheim hills dsl football & volleyball

Great way to finish the season for our DSL Football and Volleyball teams! Both teams won their last game of the season.  The Volleyball team won in two games: 25-10, 25-21!  They served beautifully, dominating the Heritage Oak Huskies.  Keely D., Jessica C. and Joelle K. were strong on the court in the first game and Lauren M., Naomi M. and Marie V. were on fire in the second game!  They are looking forward to continuing their success in the next season.

The Cougars finished on a high note defeating Heritage Oak 25 to 12.  The cougars fell behind early 6 to 0 but were able to answer back by scoring on a long pass from Cole M. to Nathan L. After trailing 12 to 6 the Cougars got a key defensive stop and were able to take advantage of the good field position.  Andy C. scored on a 35 yard run to tie the score at 12.  The Cougars would never again trail in the game.  Cole and Nathan hooked up again on a long touchdown pass and Andy had another long touchdown run to complete the cougar scoring.  Defensively the Cougars got great play from Matthew W. and Parker L. The Cougars ended the season 3-3, but the improvement was amazing and wonderful to see.
