SNACK TIME pumpkin cranberry bread

This Pumpkin Cranberry Bread is a favorite fall snack--and an easy entree into the kitchen for little bakers as well.  The photo and recipe are courtesy of textile designer Lena Corwin for Design Sponge.  Find the full recipe here (I usually cut the amount of sugar in 1/3 or 1/2).

Tri-Way Play-offs started on Monday for the volleyball and football teams.  Both of the teams won on Monday!  So we are off to the semi-finals….the girls volleyball team sadly lost on Tuesday to the Carden Hall Eagles  in a very tough 3-game match, but they finished the season with a 11-2 record.  The boys won the semi-final game against Calvary and made it to the Tri-Way finals for the first time.  Unfortunately they lost to Carden Hall in the finals 14-6.  Despite the loss, it still was a very successful season with the boys finishing the season with a record of 12-2!

Second Grade Music Program – “Dino-Stars”
Mrs. Zavoral’s second grade music program “Dino-Stars” was on Wednesday and it was a wonderful, wonderful show!  All of the students were dressed up as dinosaurs and there were so many amazing creative dinosaur costumes!  Great job all you moms and dads!  During part of the show the second graders went into the audience to ‘recruit’ a teacher to teach the ‘dinosaur two-step’ too….it was so much fun watching the dinosaurs teaching the teachers.

Eighth Grade Bonding Trip
On Friday, October 29, the eighth graders left for the annual “Bonding Trip”.  The boys went to Irvine Lakeview Terrace for a camping trip, complete with tents, fishing poles, cooking stoves and lots of food!  The boys had memorable trip-many of them camping and fishing for the first time.  This trip is so important because it gives all the boys an opportunity to get to know their classmates and teachers in a more meaningful way.  Many of our graduating  8th graders have been here at Fairmont since Kindergarten and will soon be moving on to high school and the next ‘season’ of their lives.
The eighth grade girls went to South Coast Plaza for some quality shopping time (very important), and then to Maggiano’s for lunch (also very important), and then went to “The Mansion” (as they all called it) for a sleep-over!  They all worked together preparing, by their request, a Thanksgiving Day feast for dinner (with turkey and all the fixings).  They then talked and shared and watched movies all night long!  Many of the girls are anxious to enter the next stage of their lives, but truly will love their classmates and treasure these memories for a very long time!  (VERY important)

Spirit Day
On Monday, November 1, junior high had its first “Spirit Day”.  Each grade dressed up with a color theme and competed for the “Most Spirited Class” award.  Eighth Grade won the color competition (most blue) and Sixth Grade won the dance competition (dancing to Miley Cyrus’ Party in the USA).  These activities were taken very seriously as there were free dress days and free pizza lunches on the line!

Halloween
It was a scary, spooky day on Halloween!  Pre-school paraded around with their teachers.  The pre-school teachers dressed up as lady-bugs and director, Candace Atherton was…the bug-catcher!! The students and parents loved seeing the enthusiasm that our wonderful teachers brought to the day.

The elementary classes paraded, and loved showing off their clever costumes. The Second Grade teachers dressed up with characters from Alice in Wonderland with the Mad Hatter (Mrs. Brewster), The White Rabbit (Mrs. Lee), The Queen of Hearts (Mrs.Thall) and Alice (Mrs. Zavoral).  Third Grade teachers, Mrs. Bloomingdale and Mrs. Carroll were “Ketcup and Mustard”…they were hysterical. They hung out with Second-Grader Parker L. who was a giant hot dog and bun.  Mr. Drake, who never dresses up, was a camper fisherman this year as he and the 8th grade boys were leaving after the parade for the annual “8th Grade Bonding Trip”.

Service Project - 5th Grade
The fifth graders are collecting leftover Halloween candy to donate to our troops. Fifth grader, Bridget Foley, who is coordinating the project explained,  "We thought this would be a good project, because it is something that we can do on our own. It makes you feel good to sacrifice for the troops who give so much for our country."

The students have been making signs to promote the project, and they have decorated bags and boxes so other classes have a place to donate their candy if they would like to contribute. We have already collected two big bags so far, and we hope to collect ten big bags before next Friday. This year, we are really committed to service-based learning, and with all of the wonderful ideas our students  are generating, we know we can really make a difference!

SHOW & TELL
All Hallows' Eve
"It's Halloween! It's Halloween!
The moon is full and bright
And we shall see what can't be seen
On any other night."
-Jack Prelutsky
Ghosts and goblins and many other fantastic creatures graced the Mable Campus on Friday, October 29.   Halloween festivities began with our yearly first and second grade parade in the morning. By afternoon, all the elementary classes enjoyed a party organized by the room moms.  The day culminated with the Annual Halloween Haunt sponsored by the Fairmont Parent Association.  Costumed revelers danced to scary tunes and munched on creepy snacks, such as eyeballs made of rice crispy treats. Many clubs from all campuses provided craft activities, games and even a haunted house for all to enjoy. We were happy to see many former students and future families attend.  For the Fairmont children, this is one of the most exciting holidays of the year.

Mable Elementary Reigns at Volleyball Again!
Congratulations to our 5th / 6th grade girls volleyball team for being undefeated League Champions for the 2nd consecutive year. On Tuesday, Fairmont Mable beat McDowell 25-7 and 25-13. The girls played very well as a team, and each girl contributed to our success all season long. Our student athletes continue to strive for perfection on and off the court, not only with their academics. Their conduct on campus and on the volleyball court is exemplary. Congratulations on your hard work and effort for a successful 2010 season!

SHOW & TELL
Voting Day Results
Citron students joined the rest of the nation and voted on Tuesday, November 2nd! They had a tough choice to make: choosing between an ice cream party or a donut party. Ice cream won by a landslide, beating out donuts 128 to 57. The students will see the results of their votes on Tuesday, November 9th when they will enjoy ice cream at snack.

Character Counts – Respect
We are continuing to build our Character Counts rainbow for the month of November with yellow for “Respect”.  Our teachers have begun discussing the meaning and how the students can show respect at school and home. Feel free to join us and speak with your child about respect and the importance of using good manners, being tolerant and accepting of differences, being considerate of others feelings and not hitting or hurting anyone. As we recognize each child for demonstrating good character, we will give him or her a brick to add to the rainbow corresponding with the color of his or her good deed. We would like parents to also join in the efforts of building our rainbow and would like you to give out yellow bricks to anyone you see acting respectful around campus. Together with the help of our campus mascot “Hero,” the students will gain an understanding of the importance of good character. Feel free to come and take a look at how many students have been respectful so far for the month of November!

November 3, 2010

Final Score: Anaheim Hills beats Calvary, 36-16

Off to the finals we go!! The Anaheim Hills Tri-Way football team defeated the Calvary Eagles in the semi-finals of the Tri-Way league.   The score was 36-16.  A great group effort by our team!  Their record is 12-1, with the one loss being to Carden Hall, whom the Cougars lost to 6-8 on a rainy day.  Guess who they meet in the finals?  Of course, Carden Hall!  A great rematch!
