Blackboard Library Pages
The new Blackboard Library Pages for use at home and at school are exciting new educational tools that make learning even more fun and accessible!  Here is a short list of the many things available to our families
· Two library sites - Kidzone is for students in preschool through the fourth grade and Teenzone is for students in Grades 5-8.  The links in each are very similar but are age appropriate.
· Our youngest students can experience the fun of learning with educational videos, age-appropriate digital and print books that are read to them, and wonderful educational games and activities.
· Access to our Library Researcher - Students can now check online to see what books are available in their school library.  They will eventually be able to put books on hold from home.  As if that is not enough, students and parents will also be able to access book descriptions and book reviews online!
· Research sites including BrainPop, dictionary, thesaurus, Pebble Go Science, Discovery Education, Gale and safe research sites.
· Research tools for students that will help them with writing bibliographies, organizing a research paper, links to search engines, printable tools and links to local public libraries.
· Hundreds of digital and video books including links to apps for Kindle and Nook!
· Links to all the Renaissance Learning Products such as Home Connect and AR Bookfind, as well as Parent Guides to AR and AM.
· Many links to student-oriented current events and periodicals as well as a ton of links to children's authors.
· Last, but definitely not least, links to hundreds of educational games and activities.

FRIDAY FOLDER mable campus january 14

SHOW & TELL
Citron Kindergartners "Plant Their Roots"
As we all know, traditions play an important role in a child's life, and many of those traditions come from our children's school experiences. It is our hope that the result of these experiences will bring lasting memories that our students can look back upon with a sense of enjoyment and pride.

Last Friday, our Citron kindergartners took part in one of our favorite traditions--planting their tree at Mable.  The children "plant their roots" at Mable as a way of looking forward to continuing their Fairmont education.

The students began their adventure by riding over on the bus with their teachers, Mrs. Bauman, Dr. Molina, and Miss Young. After learning about their tree from representatives from the City of Anaheim, the children helped plant the tree and insure that it got off to a healthy start. They then had the chance to meet our staff, tour the school, and most importantly, eat pizza and play on the playground.  They had a wonderful time as did all of us here at Mable.

We hope that this tradition will remain with the children as a fond memory as they travel their educational path to their future.

WordMasters Challenge
A team of students representing the Mable Campus of Fairmont Private Schools recently won highest honors in the WordMasters Challenge--a national language arts competition entered by approximately 220,000 students annually, which consists of three separate meets held at intervals during the school year.

Competing in the very difficult Gold Division of the Challenge, and coached by Donna Riley, the school's seventh graders tied for tenth place in the nation in the year's first meet, held in December.  There were 173 school teams competing at this grade level and in this division.

Seven of the school's students won highest honors for individual achievement as well:  Fourth graders Lina Kim and Joseph Kim; seventh graders Alec Hsing, Emily Liu, Kaitlynn Cho, and Michelle Phan; and eighth grader Jesse Wu. All earned perfect scores in meets for their grade levels, while in the entire country only 146 fourth graders, 83 seventh graders, and 51 eighth graders did so.

Other students who achieved outstanding results in the meet included third graders Carly Minow and Alexisse Yoo; fourth graders Emaad Razzak, Mei Johnson, Lauren Ju, Taylor Tran, Ariana Chow, and Dayne Tran; fifth graders Gurveer Singh, Jocelyn Liu, Tammie Nguyen, Lauren Kang, Yasmin Veys and Tejal Patel; sixth graders Jessie Lin, Tara Falt, Ejay Cho, Leena Surapaneni, Alison Oh, McKenna Sainburg, and Yvana Han; seventh graders Kitty Jia, Jade Audon, Jeremy Tan, Derrick Li, Liza Mathews, Nick Palmer, Tanner Lemke, Leanne Agulto, and Alfred Mustafa; and eighth graders Michael Niu, Jessica Chung, Milan Mistry, Meeran Ismail, Skylar Hess, and Ryan Han.

The WordMasters Challenge is an exercise in critical thinking that first encourages students to become familiar with a set of interesting new words (considerably harder than grade level), and then challenges them to use those words to complete analogies expressing various kinds of logical relationships.   Working to solve the Challenge analogies helps students learn to think both analytically and metaphorically. Though most vocabulary-boosting and analogy-solving activities have been created for high school students, the WordMasters materials have been specifically designed for younger students in grades three through eight. They are particularly well suited for able and interested children who rise to the challenge of learning new words and enjoy the logical puzzles posed by analogies.

The WordMasters Challenge has been administered for the past 24 years by a company based in Allendale, New Jersey, which is dedicated to inspiring high achievement in American schools. The students will participate in two more WordMasters meets during coming months. Medals and certificates will be awarded in June to those who achieve and/or improve the most in the course of the year.

Imagination Celebration Poster Contest
The Imagination Celebration Poster Contest just announced that the artwork of Mable seventh grader Katie Ann McAllister was chosen from over 500 entries as one of the 24 finalists selected for the 2011 Imagination Celebration art exhibition this spring.

In addition, the 24 finalists will be showcased on SparkOC.com where the public can view their work and vote on their favorite piece. Voting will be available between January 21 and February 4th.  Please spread the word and invite friends and family to cast their vote. The People's choice winner will receive four tickets to Disneyland and a $100.00 cash prize as well as being featured on Spark OC during the Imagination Celebration.

Congratulations to Katie for working so hard on this project.

FRIDAY FOLDER edgewood campus january 14

SHOW & TELL
JK to the Ocean Institute
On Thursday, January 6th the two Jr. Kindergarten classes went on our second field trip of the year to the Ocean Institute in Dana Point.  The first excitement on our trip was when our bus turned toward the ocean and we saw a beautiful ocean view.  The students were very excited to see the water.  We were then divided into four groups and rotated through learning stations inside the institute.  At one station the students were each given a photo of a type of ocean life; dolphin, shrimp, whale..., and they listened to the sound the items made.  After learning eight or nine sounds the students were challenged to name the sounds without assistance.  They did a great job!  At a second station the students were given a pile of plastic ocean animals.  They were asked to be scientists and sort the animals into like groups.  They then put their sorted animals on a graph.  The objective of third station was to learn about where different types of ocean animals live.  Each student was given a small picture of an animal and was asked to find their animal in one of four aquariums.  The students then were able to see where many animals lived (in the rocks, on the sandy ocean floor, in the plants).  In one of these four aquariums is a bubble that the students could stand in to get a "fish's eye" view of a tank and swimming fish.  The last station was an open aquarium.  The students first learned about sea stars, and then they were invited to roll up their sleeves and touch sea stars and a sea cucumber.  Almost all of the students took the opportunity to touch a new animal.  A fun memory I doubt they will forget.  Please return to the Ocean Institute with your families, it is great fun for all ages and a bit educational too!

4th Grade Science Presentation: Dr. Khan visits 4th grade
Biodegradation and gene cloning may sound intimidating to some people, but ask any 4th grader at Edgewood, and they will let you know what it means!  The 4th graders welcomed Dr. Nasreen Khan to science class on Wednesday, January 12th.

Dr. Khan taught the students about both the harmful and beneficial uses of bacteria!  The children enjoyed learning how some bacteria can cause sickness such as pneumonia, yet others are essential to breaking down food in their bodies and the environment. The highlight of the presentation was when the students acted like scientists, and modeled how insulin is cloned into bacteria to help those who suffer from Type I diabetes!  This was at first a difficult topic to understand, but with the help from Dr. Khan, it was enjoyable and easy to learn!

Nishant Chaturvedi presents Bionic Bot Challenge
Nishant had a great opportunity to share his Bionic Bot and the mission with his homeroom, Mr Williamson and Mrs White's class during science session. He shared his project presentation and a robot game, where the robot performs on an 8 x 4 foot playfield to accomplish selected missions in order to earn points with the class. The kids had a great time interacting with the robot and learning about the mission.

Nishant's team, The Bionic Bots competed in the First Lego League 2010 Challenge - Body Forward.  The FFL competition consist of three categories; first a project presentation, second,  a technical review of the robot's design and programming and then a robot game. This is a great opportunity for kids to learn about science and robotics.

The Challenge theme was Body Forward and after conducting research on the human body, the Bionic Bots selected a broken spinal cord as their real world problem.  They then had to research and create an innovative solution to fix a spinal cord. The Bionic Bots team coach Jon Friestedt helped tremendously to encourage the kids and guide them on their research with the help of mentor Dr. William Loudon, PhD, MD from CHOC Hospital in Orange, CA. The Bionic Bots presented their project to Dr. Loudon who provided valuable medical feedback and many stimulating insights. Dr. Loudon's specialty Surgery, Neurological.   Additionally, Sapphire Perez a senior at the University of California, Irvine, and a member of the Society for Women Engineers provided a lecture on Biomedical Engineering to the Bionic Bots.

The Bionic Bots competed in the Orange County FLL Qualifying Tournament at the Jewish Community Center, Irvine, CA during November.  The team won 2nd place in the "Presentation" category and moved on to the Southern California LEGOLAND CUP on December 5th, where the team earned a 1st place in the "Research" category.

Nishant has been taking ROBOTICS classes at Mathobotix in Irvine.  The classes are designed to promote the support and learning of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) using robotics through a grade level structured curriculum.

Nishant had a great time sharing his robot with his classmates. He will be starting on his next challenge for FLL 2011 Qualifying Tournament which will be sponsored by the City of Irvine and will be called the Mayor's CUP.  Nishant is looking forward to another great year of having fun on the robot playfield with his teammates.
Hanukkah in 1st Grade
Before our winter break, Mrs. Brown's first graders had the privilege of learning about Hanukkah from Sam and Madeline's mom.  Mrs. Gregor gave a wonderful presentation about the Hanukkah celebration and traditions during this festive time.  We were able to taste some scrumptious latkes with our choice of toppings and traditional bread.  The students enjoyed learning how to play the Dreidel game and enjoyed winning the chocolate coins while listening to Sam and Maddie's aunt sing songs on her very own musical CD!  Thank you Mrs. Gregor for allowing us to share in such a special experience!

SCOREBOARD game highlights: mable girls basketball vs. heritage oak

Game Highlights: Mable Panthers vs. Heritage Oak Huskies
January 11, 2011

Final Score: Mable defeats Oakridge: 19-10

The Lady Panthers pulled off a great performance in their win against the Heritage Oak Huskies. We fell behind in the first quarter, 1-6, but picked it up in the second half from the great floor leadership of Sheryne N. Sheryne was able to score several lay-ups, and connected on most of her free throws to help lead our team to a victory. We held the visiting team to only two points in the second half with great defense from Karla G., Risha B., and Madi N. Even though Heritage Oak put up a great trapping defense, our team was able to move to open spots, took great shots, rebounded well, and simply never gave up. The entire team played excellent Fairmont Panther Basketball.

SNACK TIME sweet tortilla snowflakes

Here's a fun snack that puts your kids' paper snowflake making skills to use!
  • Heat the oven to 400 degrees. Warm the tortillas (about 15 seconds) in the microwave.
  • Individually fold the tortillas in half once and then in half again, so that you end up with a shape that resembles a wedge of pie (it will be thick). Using clean scissors, cut triangle, circles, or squares out of the edges, as if you were making paper snowflakes. Unfold the tortillas.
  • Lightly brush the tops of the snowflakes with canola or vegetable oil and place them on a cookie sheet slightly apart.
  • Bake them until lightly browned and crisp (about 4 minutes). Sift confectioners' sugar on the snowflakes while warm. For an extrasparkly effect, you can sprinkle on a bit of edible glitter. Makes 6.
