An Ocean of Fun for 3rd Grade
On Thursday, November 4, the Mable Street 3rd graders headed off to the Long Beach Aquarium for their first field trip of the year. It was one of the hottest days on record and being inside the air conditioned aquarium was a perfect way to spend the day.

We departed from school at 8:45 AM with all three classes on one bus. Each class took two parent chaperones who were as excited to go as we were! The ride was about 45 minutes and upon exiting the bus at the aquarium, we were led to an auditorium where we learned how to identify fish by their shape, size, and depth at which they swim in the ocean.

After having fun in that class, we headed into the amazing aquarium to explore every ocean habitat and observe very closely hundreds of unique sea creatures! Some of our favorites were the cute and frisky sea otters swimming all about as they were fed in front of our eyes! We loved the feathered seahorses that looked as if they had leafy plant-like wings growing on them, but were actually an adaptation for camouflaging in the sea. Of course, everyone was amazed at seeing several types of sharks swimming right next to the glass in front of our eyes! We all loved touching the smooth Manta rays in the outdoor touch tanks as they glided under our two-finger gentle touches.

We all ate our yummy sack lunches together on the grass as pigeons tried to dive bomb us for any crumbs we might leave them! We had great fun in the gift shop picking out little reminders of our wonderful day at the aquarium before we climbed back on the bus to go back to school in the 95 degree heat! It was a great day for everyone!

Eighth Graders Visit Our Nation's Capital
Mable 8th graders spent last week exploring Washington, D.C., where they were introduced to U.S. history and government and immersed in the culture and heritage of our country. Our trip began on the coast of the James River where students walked through a Powhatan Indian village, went below deck aboard the Susan Constant, and learned how to fire a musket in colonial Jamestown. Following the settlers, students then explored Williamsburg where they participated in a reenactment of government, toured colonial shops, and marveled at the weapons display in the Governor's Palace. Later that night, students and chaperones were enlisted into the militia and drilled around the grounds of the magazine in preparation for battle.

After exploring historic Yorktown, Monticello, and Mount Vernon, we moved onto new history in our nation's capital. Students walked the hallways of the Capitol and visited the top of the Washington Monument to see a bird's eye view of the city. On Veteran's Day, students paid their respects at Arlington National Cemetery's Tomb of the Unknowns and enjoyed walking through the city at night to see the lighted monuments and memorials.
Students marveled at the exhibits in the Smithsonian museums of Air and Space, American History and Natural History and enjoyed the interactive fun of the Newseum. The emotional displays of the Holocaust Museum captivated everyone but the hilarious performance of Shear Madness at the Kennedy Center left everyone in good spirits by night's end.

Eagles Cheer Team
The Edgewood Eagle's Cheer Team won 1st place on Saturday at the Universal Cheerleading Association's Southern California Regional Competition! This was the team's first time at the competition and they did an amazing job! They competed in the Youth Recreation division, and were so happy to receive their award! Coaches, staff members, family, and friends were all impressed by the team's energy, synchronization, and routine difficulty! Thank you to those who participated in the Eagle Mascot Fundraiser to help pay for the competition! It was by far their best performance! Next stop, the California State Championship Competition on January 23rd at the Long Beach Pyramid. Congratulations Eagles!

Toy Drive for CHOC
The spirit of the holiday season is underway and it's time for our 11th Annual Toy Drive starting Monday, Nov. 15th, and ending Friday, Dec. 10th. This event is sponsored by the Character Development Department at the Edgewood Campus, and it is our fourth year participating. With appreciation to all who participate, we are asking all our families to help us by donating a toy for a boy or girl who is in CHOC - Children's Hospital of Orange County. These children would truly benefit from receiving a special gift on Christmas morning and all year long.

Due to infection control and in order to protect the patients, the toys MUST be NEW and UNWRAPPED. We are unable to send USED toys to the hospital. The toys will be picked up at school by one of our business office staff people, Judy Coderre, and her friends from the Orange Coast Harley Davidson's Chapter. They will come to the Edgewood Campus on Friday, December 10th from 11:40-12:15 pm via motorcycles to pick up the toys.

If you would like to donate toys to a patient at CHOC, please drop off at your child's classroom now till the December 10th. Thank you in advance for your kindness and generosity.
