THE FAIRMONT FIVE summer boredom busters

The Fourth of July holiday is now behind us and summer is starting to get a little less exciting around our house. Maybe, you're in a summer slump too, and as Dr. Seuss so aptly puts it, "un-slumping yourself is not easily done".  However, with a little effort (yes, kids, it's time to turn off the TV), a little creativity, and a few glue sticks thrown in just for fun, you can get in that summer spirit all over again.  Here are some ideas that have worked for me:
  1. Get out and about - I know it's fun to stay in your pajamas all day, but a few days of vegging out and your kids will ready for some serious stimulation.  It's time to load up and go for an adventure! Have you been to Bower's Museum (or their Kidseum), Discovery Science Center or the Long Beach Aquarium of the Pacific? What about a boat ride to Catalina or a camping trip to Lake Arrowhead? There's so much to do, to see, and to experience before the school bell rings!
  2. Plan a party - So what if your kids aren't having a birthday this summer--that's no reason to forgo summer celebrations. Let your kids help you plan a fun get-together for friends complete with special food and games.  Need inspiration for your theme?  How 'bout a summer star-gazing party, a backyard camp-out party, an outdoor movie night, a midsummer night's dream party...
  3. Hit the books - Fire up your kids' brains with a trip to your local library or bookstore.  Let them create their own summer reading list or research a topic a week that interests them.  Offer incentives when your kids read a certain number of books or better yet, write about what they are reading in a journal.
  4. Give back - Summer is a great time to encourage children to get involved in giving back. Encourage your kids to stage a bake sale or lemonade stand and give the money to a charity they connect with.  Spend some time cleaning out closets and gathering gently used toys and clothing to donate.  Create artwork for a local senior center or write letters to soldiers overseas.
  5. Play games - Whether it's planning a weekly Family Game Night or coming up with fun ideas for at-home playdates make sure to make play center stage this summer.  Have you had a teddy bear picnic yet?  What about a superhero water gun fight?  I'm a big fan of old-fashioned outdoor games like sack races and three-legged races.  Hopscotch is another fun, easy game and you can modify it to teach math facts and sight words.

HOW TO explore nature in LA

Looking for something new and exciting to do with the family this weekend? We recommend an adventure to the nearby land of Los Angeles for a day dedicated to learning about and exploring nature. Just off the 110, amid all those skyscrapers and billboards, are some great spots for kids of all ages to find inspiration....

Kick off the day with a visit to the LA Natural History Museum. Immerse yourself in the beauty of nature at the new 31/2 acre Nature Garden complete with pond, Get Dirty Zone, edible garden and living wall. Check out the nature lab for hands-on animal presentations and don't miss the Butterfly Pavilion or the famous Dinosaur exhibit! General museum admission is $12 for adults and $5 for children.

After a morning learning about nature, head next-door for a picnic in the Exposition Park Rose Garden. This stunning garden has been a part of Los Angeles history since 1928 and is now a destination for LA natives and tourists alike. The park is open to the public daily from 9am to sunset and is the perfect place to "stop and smell the roses."

SCHOOL NEWS oc register recognizes world-changing prep student

Congratulations to Fairmont Prep Academy's Nathaly Basto Camargo who was named one of Ten Graduates Who Will Change the World by the Orange County Register.  The article shared Nathaly's passion for education and for giving back to her community.  She founded an organization with a mission of educating high achieving minority students on ways to receive acceptance and scholarships to top colleges like Harvard, Stanford and Yale, where Nathaly will be matriculating this fall.  She took what she learned from her own experience and started speaking at area public schools--motivating soon-to-be graduates on how they too could go to a top college on scholarship.

Great work Nathaly!  We think you're already changing the world for the better and wish you all the best at Yale!

Anaheim Hills:
Field Day!
What a blast!  Field day was super fun for all of our students.  They had a wonderful time 'racing' with all of the funny obstacles. They jumped through hula-hoops, rode a scooter through cones, juggled balls on a spoon and did hop-scotch!  They laughed and giggled as they cheered their classmates on to the finish line.  Everyone loved getting their medals and yummy snow cones.

Historic Anaheim:
Move-Up Day
On Tuesday, June 4th, Historic Anaheim held our traditional Move-Up Day.  On this day, JK-8th grade students "move-up" and visit their next year's classrooms. It is an exciting day for students and teachers alike.
Students met and spent time with each of the teachers who are in the grade they will be in next school year.

Each teacher presented to the students about a unique topic. For example, Mr. Edmisten had his students participate in a probability game, Mr. Briner and Mrs. Riley presented to sixth grade students about the Grand Canyon overnight trip, Ms. Gratzer read a story to the Junior Kindergarten students and Miss Patterson explained a "day in the life of sixth grade" to the students visiting her class.
More photos from Move-Up Day are available on our Flickr page.
