A Message From Our Campus Director
Once again the holiday season sneaks up on us before we know it! The children are already filled with excitement as they anticipate the wonderful things to come. As always, their joys are ours as well, and they serve to remind us of what a treasure your children truly are.
We look forward once again to our holiday performances. Our first and second graders have been rehearsing non stop and can think of nothing but their songs, lines, and of course most important, their costumes! Our sixth, seventh, and eighth graders, along with our all-campus orchestra, will be performing this month as well. We hope you will be able to enjoy one of these performances.
As the holidays approach and another year comes to a close, I want to be sure to thank you for your continued support of our school community. You and your children bring out the best in us as we strive to provide the best for you and your children - a partnership based on mutual trust and common goals.
As we move forward into the new year, we will be entering our very important re-enrollment season. During this time, we will be asking all of you to commit to another year with us. We hope to see all of you return for the 2011-2012 school year. We would like to invite you to our Information Nights (which will also include morning presentations) coming up in January and February. You will have an opportunity to learn all about your child's next grade level from the teachers who will be teaching that grade level. Please watch the calendar and Blackboard for more details.
I want to wish all of you a most wonderful Holiday. May your New Year be filled with good health, happiness, and love. Enjoy your children and the time you have together over this winter break. We look forward to an exciting New Year filled with fun and success.
Be safe, happy, and well, and we will begin again in January.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Carole Calabria

Junior high Spanish students often are pleasantly surprised at the amount of Spanish they understand and are able to speak. Before class the other day, Alvin in 8th grade commented on his understanding of a comic book in Spanish, and some of the 7th graders were amazed at their ability to understand greetings and simple questions at Hispanic restaurants.
At the end of our first trimester, Spanish 1A class students created a mini-story about one of their classmates. For instance, children in periods 3 and 6 wrote about classmates forgetting their belts. Spanish 1B students also presented a story about helping with household chores. Students presented the story to the class in groups of two. Junior high students at Fairmont have the advantage of completing the equivalent of high school level one by the end of eighth grade. This set-up allows for intensive practice in each concept, which lets students take the necessary steps to learn a foreign language. This process, in turn, also improves understanding of their own language.
Learning a foreign language is a cumulative process, and practice makes perfect. The more students practice and recycle familiar information and skills, the better they will be able to integrate new ones--for example, practicing new grammar concepts with familiar vocabulary. Foreign language students should study each day and take advantage of the great resources available to them. Besides Blackboard videos, Powerpoint presentations, and Home Tutor®, a great tool to encourage students to use daily is CONJUGEMOS at www.classzone.com. Students need to click in level one and practice current lesson conjugations. They receive a score every five minutes and are able to get help with definitions and conjugations if needed. Student should practice until they achieve at least 90% of the answers correct. Learning a foreign language is similar to math in that constant practice is needed for learning to take place.
In its report, "College Bound Seniors" the College Entrance Examination Board states that students who averaged four or more years of foreign language study scored higher on the verbal section of the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) than those who did not.
It is not always easy for a junior high student to manage his or her time when dealing with classes and after-school activities, but at the same time, students have the support from home, school, and their teachers to be successful.

I am very excited to have the first graders in Spanish class this year. They are adorable and have so much fun! The children love the puppets used in class (which, by the way, only speak Spanish). The students enjoy greeting them and speaking with them.
In the lower grades, students are exposed to the Spanish language through songs, videos, and many other visual aids. This past week, they learned to say and write "Happy Thanksgiving Day" or in Spanish "Dia de dar Gracias." You can also ask your third grader to tell you the time in Spanish!
In the higher grade levels, fifth graders have practiced how to describe someone's general appearance and basic personality. Sixth graders will not get lost when they travel to Mexico, as they have learned to ask and tell directions in a city. Also, please remember to ask your child to bring his or her Spanish notes home in order to continue practicing.
